“I would like to show you how I read
Scripture, to show you what I’ve come
to understand about engaging with the Scriptures at the level of the informed
imagination. . . . Consider this my personal
invitation to join me as we make our way
through the Gospels.”
— Michael Card
Michael Card embarks on animaginative journey through the
Gospel of Luke. Picturing Luke as
historian, Gentile, doctor and slave,
Card approaches Luke’s written
account with questions that engage
the imagination. Join him in the
work of opening heart and mind tothe “Gospel of Amazement.”
Michael Card is an award-winning musician and perform-
ing artist. He earned a master’s degree in biblical studies

For years Michael Card’s music has
imaginatively explored the narrative
power of the Word of God. Now
in the Biblical Imagination Series,Card invites readers to enter into
Scripture as he does, at the level of
the imagination.
These volumes help us discover the
biblical text for ourselves, ask our
own questions and discover deeper
truths. Taking seriously the indi-
vidual life of each Gospel writer,
the Biblical Imagination Series rein-
tegrates our minds with our hearts
to recapture our imaginations with
the beauty and power of Christ.
“You and I are called to move forward on
our own, interacting with heart and mind,
continually asking what all the facts mean.
This is our calling. . . . Most of us are not scholars. Perhaps we should begin thinking of
ourselves as ‘ imaginators.’”

J 13, 2011.
Copastors Kent Carlson and Mike
Lueken tell the decade-long story of
how God took their thriving, con-
sumer-oriented church and trans-
formed it into a modest congrega-
tion of believers committed to the
growth of the spirit—even when it
meant a decline in numbers.
“Kent Carlson and Mike Lueken love the
church—not an abstract one, but the one
that meets: here and there, down on the corner, or in a warehouse. They love their
church. . . . Please read this book and cre-
atively apply it to your situation.”
— From the foreword by Dallas
Willard
Kent Carlson founded Oak Hills Church of Folsom,
California, in 1984. For the past thirteen years he has been
co-senior pastor of the church with Mike Lueken. Carlson is
a graduate of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and liveswith his family in the Sacramento, California, area.

Q: What is the primary difference
between Oak Hills now versus the
seeker days?
a: When we first started this jour-
ney, Dallas Willard told us that it ispossible that when it is all said and
done . . . our church may not look
that different from the outside, but
that in reality, everything would be
different. There is much truth to
this. . . . At Oak Hills, the DNA of
our church, the inner core of whatdrives us, has gone through a pro-
found transformation. We simply
are not that driven any longer by
outward success. We find ourselves
focused on what it takes, in the
details of our lives, to actually,
in some observable way, be trans-formed into the character of Christ.
While we work hard at making
sure that the church organization
is strong and healthy, the church
organization is not the end game.
The end game is transformed lives.
. . . More and more we are focusing
the organization around helping
spiritually hungry people actually,
in practical ways, become more like
Christ. The church exists, in our
view, to provide reliable means for
spiritually hungry people to live in
the reality of the kingdom of God
and to cooperate with the work of
the Spirit of God in our transfor-
mation. As best we can, we seek to
have our programs and ministries
focused on this end.
Mike Lueken is copastor with Kent Carlson of Oak Hills
Church of Folsom, California. He is a graduate of Trinity
Evangelical Divinity School and lives with his family in the
Sacramento, California, area.
