BONAVENTURE (12-13, 5-7 A-10) @ DUQUESNE DUKES (8-18, 1-11 A-10) OPENING TIP Coming off a fast-paced win over Massachusetts on Wednesday, St. Bonaventure looks to put consecutive victories together for just the second time in more than two months as it faces longtime rival Duquesne on Saturday night. The meeting will be the second of the season between the two teams, as SBU claimed a 68-60 win over the Dukes in its first game of the month. The Bonnies currently occupy the 12th – and final – A-10 Championship position, but with a win could potentially jump all the way into 9th place pending other league outcomes. In the cluttered A-10 race, 6th place and 12th place in the conference standings is currently a separation of just 1.5 games. LAST TIME OUT: MOSLEY SETS ST. BONA RECORD Eric Mosley scored the most points ever by a St. Bonaventure player in an Atlantic 10 game as the senior guard carried the Bonnies with a career-high 39-point performance to an up-tempo 99-94 triumph over visiting UMass. The two teams combined for 34 fastbreak points – the most in a Bona game this season – and Chris Johnson scored a career-high 22 points while Demitrius Conger posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. But it was Mosley who stole the show with his efficient 12-18 shooting, including 5-8 from 3-point range, and 10-10 from the free-throw line in just 31 minutes of action. No Bonaventure player has scored more points than Mosley in a regulation 40-minute game since Greg Sanders tallied 46 against Detroit in 1977. It was the second straight 30-point performance for Mosley, who set a then-career high with 30 points at Richmond last Saturday. Over his past four games, Mosley has scored 105 points and seen his points per game average go from 10.0 before the stretch to its current 12.6 average. In fact, Mosley has jumped from 98th on St. Bonaventure’s all-time scoring list into a tie for 83rd in just four games. A HISTORICAL NIGHT $ Wednesday marked the first time ever that St. Bonaventure has won an A-10 game when surrendering at least 94 points in regulation. $ The 99 Bona points are the second-most in any Bonaventure A-10 game; the most also came against UMass in 1981 (104-80). $ The 99 points are also the most in any SBU regulation game in 10 years, dating back to a 104-101 loss at Ohio in 2003. $ Bona’s went a robust 32-33 (97 percent) from the free-throw line, representing the best percentage by any team in the nation this year when attempting at least 30 free throws. $ The two teams combined for 124 second-half points (63-61); more than 19 TOTAL games from Wednesday night in Division I (19 of 57 – 33 percent). quicK Hitters# The 99 points against UMass Wednesday were a season high for St. Bonaventure; meanwhile, the Bonnies allowed a season-high 94 points to the Minutemen.
# Demitrius Conger’s 13 rebounds versus the Minutemen were the second-most by a Bona player this year; the senior is close to becoming just the 13th Bonaventure player all-time with 1,200 points and 650 rebounds (1,134 pts; 611 rbs).
# Matthew Wright started for the first time since Jan. 26 against Massachusetts and played 19 minutes.
# Charlon Kloof played the second-fewest minutes of his season (9) versus UMass.
# The Bonnies held a 38-31 halftime lead over the Minutemen Wednesday and are now 9-1 when leading at the half this year.
# Ten of St. Bonaventure’s 13 losses this year have come to top-100 RPI teams, and the other three have been against top-150 teams.
# Bonaventure produced 16 second-chance points Wednesday against UMass, breaking a stretch of four straight single-digit second-chance point games.
# St. Bonaventure ranks in the top-100 nationally in five different statistical categories (entering week):

rPi rePortThe Atlantic 10 has 13 of its 16 members in the top-125 of the latest RPI rankings, tied with the Big East for the most in the nation: Butler (20), La Salle (33), VCU (36), Saint Louis (42), Temple (48), Charlotte (49), Massachusetts (59), Richmond (78), Saint Joseph’s (86), Xavier (89), St. Bonaventure (109), Dayton (116) and George Washington (124). Last week the Bonnies lost both of their games and only dropped two spots in the RPI (122 to 124).
Jordan’s Historic niGHtAs part of his career-high 18-point night at Richmond last Saturday, sophomore Jordan Gathers did not miss a shot, going 7-7 from the floor. With that performance, he became the first St. Bonaventure player in more than 16 years to attempt at least seven shots without missing. Robert Blackwell went 7-7 from the floor in a game at Massachusetts nearly 16 years to the day (Feb. 11, 1997).
uncommon road WarriorsWith a win at Duquesne, St. Bonaventure would – with still another road game remaining – tie a single-season record for most road wins in A-10 play with four, something it has done on five different occasions, and not once since the 1999-2000 campaign. The Bonnies have split their first six road games to start conference action. The Brown and White were 3-2 in road action until last Saturday’s overtime loss at Richmond, and that marked just the third time in Bonaventure’s history that it has started a conference season by earning victories in three of its first five road games (1982-83, 1985-86). It also occurred in 2002-03, but those wins were later vacated. Additionally, St. Bonaventure has never had a better road record than a home record in an A-10 season (2-4 at home this year).
small marGin For errorTen of St. Bonaventure’s first 12 Atlantic 10 games have been decided by 10 points or less for the first time since 1999-2000. Four of those have been decided by three points or less, including two recent games in overtime. Bona is 1-3 in those games, just three defensive stops and scores away from being 4-0, boasting an 8-4 A-10 record and fighting for a first-round bye. Prior to its win over UMass Wednesday, in each of the previous two games SBU erased double-digit deficits with fewer than seven minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime, but dropped both contests to La Salle and Richmond in the closing seconds by three points.
it’s a team GameEric Mosley (39) and Chris Johnson (22) combined to score 61 points in the Bonnies win over Massachusetts on Wednesday night. Additionally, it marked the first time since the 2010-11 season that two Bona players have scored 20 or more points in the same game (Ogo Adegboye (29) and Andrew Nicholson (22)) against Saint Louis on Feb. 16.
ForBes: scHmidt is tHe Best coacH For tHe money
In early February, Forbes Magazine named St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt the best college basketball coach in the nation for the money. Forbes tabulated the list based on how much a coach wins and loses as compared with the resources he has. The cost-per-win formula came out to $88,000/win for Schmidt over the past two years based on overall budget – by far the lowest in the country, and the only coach who came in under $100,000. sPortscenter’s toP 10Both Youssou Ndoye and Demitrius Conger were featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays on Jan.
16. Ndoye (No. 8) emphatically rejected two Xavier shots in a span of 13 seconds on the same defensive trip for the Bonnies. Conger (No. 7) threw down a one-handed tomahawk dunk over a Xavier defender just minutes later to tie the game at 40-40.
mosley on near-record PaceEric Mosley is connecting at a 44.7-percent clip from 3-point range, currently good for the second-best single-season 3-point percentage in program history. The senior is nearly one percent ahead the second-best season (Richard McCormick, 43.8), who also owns the program’s best single-season percentage (45.5 in 1986-87).
Mosley, who has 67 3-point makes this year, is also just one 3 shy of tying Mike Gansey for 10th on the program’s all-time single-season list for made 3-pointers. The single-season record for made 3’s is 101, set by Chris Matthews in the 2009-10 campaign. The Louisville native has hit five 3-pointers in a game four times, including each of the last two games and three times in the last four games, and has hit five or more in a game on five occasions.
History on its sideSince the Atlantic 10/Eastern 8 conducted its first conference tournament in 1977, only four tournament champions have finished with a sub-.500 record in league play the season after winning the conference title: Saint Joseph’s (3-13 in 1997-98), Rhode Island (2-14 in 1999-00), George Washington (5-11 in 2007-08) and Richmond (7-9 in 2011-12). Those four teams are also the only clubs to finish worse than 5th place in the conference standings in the season following a tournament title.
The worst finish in the conference standings following a tournament championship is URI’s 12th-place finish (last) in 1999-00. GW finished 13th out of 14 teams in 2006-07.
toP 100 on tHe same cluBThis year’s St. Bonaventure team could go down as one of the most prolific offensive squads – in terms of individual players – in program history. Currently five players are already on the top-100 scoring list in school history:
Additionally, Charlon Kloof could join that group by the end of the year. Kloof has 352, and if he reaches at least 437 career points this season, the 2012-13 team will become the first team since the 2005-06 squad with six of the top-100 all-time scorers.
That 2005-06 team includes: Michael Lee (1,427 – 16th), Ahmad Smith (1,261 – 24th), Patrick Lottin (949 – 44th), Tyler Relph (754 – 62nd), Paul Williams (584 – 82nd) and A.J. Hawkins (524 – 87th).
The last team to have seven players finish in the top-100 in scoring was the 1999-2000 NCAA Tournament club: J.R. Bremer (1,732 – 9th), Tim Winn (1,407 – 17th), Caswell Cyrus (1,121 – 27th), Patricio Prato (1,110 – 30th), Peter Van Paasen (978 – 39th) David Messiah Capers (972 – 41st) and Vidal Massiah (703 – 70th).
next uPSt. Bonaventure embarks on its second bye week of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference season before returning to action next Saturday against Charlotte at 7 p.m. The week off from game competition coincides with Bona’s mid-term break as no classes will be held next week.
Demitrius Conger is just the third St. Bonaventure player to amass 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists in a career.
The only other St. Bona players to reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists are Ahmad Smith, who registered 1,261 points, 536 rebounds and 245 assists from 2002-2006, and David Vanterpool, who posted 1,474 points, 630 rebounds and 401 assists from 1991-95.
Additionally, Conger needs just 19 more steals to reach 100 thefts in his career. If the Brooklyn native were to get to that milestone, he would join Vanterpool as the only two players in SBU history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals.

Plus / minus ProFiciency Player: When Chris Johnson is on the floor, SBU is outscoring its opponents by a +48 margin, coming out to an average of +1.92 points per game -- the best among all St. Bonaventure players. Senior Eric Mosley is second at +2.26, followed by Jordan Gathers (+1.58) and Matthew Wright (+1.39).
lineuP: Prorated out to a 40-minute game, the lineup of Demitrius Conger, Johnson, Wright, Youssou Ndoye and Mosley has been the most efficient (starters for the most recent game against Massachusetts). Those five are +38 on the year in just 85 minutes of action, which comes out to a +17.85 average over 40 minutes, compared with +5.56 for the most common starting lineup, which features Marquise Simmons and Charlon Kloof instead of Ndoye and Mosley.
Past years: Despite what many may assume, Andrew Nicholson did not lead St. Bonaventure in plus/minus last year. That honor goes to Conger, who averaged a +6.2 margin compared with Nicholson’s +5.9.
lonG ranGe strenGtHs & WeaKnessesSt. Bonaventure enters Saturday’s game as the A-10’s fourth-best 3-point shooting team, connecting at a 36.7-percent clip from long range. The Bonnies also boast two of the league’s best 3-point shooters in Eric Mosley (1st, 44.7 percent) and Chris Johnson (15th, 38.6 percent). Additionally, Matthew Wright – who who missed two recent games with a left foot injury – is connecting at a 44.4-percent rate from 3-point range in his 10 A-10 games (12-27), including a two-game stretch in which he went 8-10.
In their 12 wins, the Bonnies are shooting 40 percent from 3-point range (92-231). However, in their 13 losses, the Bonnies are shooting 33.8 percent from 3-point range (85-251). In two of those 11 victories, SBU shot poorly from deep (2-14 at Cornell; 2-20 vs. Siena), but still claimed wins. In its nine other wins, Bonaventure has shot a lethal 46 percent (81-175) from the 3-point arc.
GoinG GoldFor just the third time this year, St. Bonaventure donned its alternate gold jerseys on Jan. 26 in front of a Homecoming Weekend crowd. SBU is now 1-2 when wearing the gold uniforms this season, with the losses coming against Saint Louis and Iona, and the victory coming over Siena. SBU has three jerseys for the 2012-13 season, with the other two being its home whites and road browns.
cold From 3St. Bonaventure made a season-low-tying two 3-pointers in its loss to Saint Louis on Jan. 26. The Bonnies went just 2-16 from 3-point range, but came into the game against the Billikens red-hot from 3, connecting on 21-38 attempts over the previous two games. On two other occasions SBU had been limited to just two makes from 3 during a game, but both of those (Cornell, Siena) were wins for the Brown and White.
too close For comFortBonaventure’s first three losses came by a combined 10 points as each was by four points or less (at Canisius, 72-69; at Ohio, 69-65; at Arkansas State, 73-70). Two of those losses (Ohio, Arkansas State) came in the closing seconds as each team hit a game-winning 25-foot 3-pointer in transition. In all, six of the Bonnies’ first eight games were decided by five points or less, and until their consecutive blowouts of Cleveland State and The Citadel, only one game (Siena, 58-43) had been decided by more than 10 points.
He’s looKinG all WriGHtMatthew Wright suffered a left foot injury during Bonaventure’s game against Saint Louis on Jan. 26, and missed the next two games before returning against Rhode Island on Feb. 9. The junior was the main catalyst behind SBU’s two huge road wins against Temple and Saint Joseph’s as he scored a game- and career-high 22 points versus the Owls and posted 18 opposite the Hawks.
After struggling to just a 17.6-percent clip (6-34) from 3-point range during the non-conference schedule, Wright is a scorching 12-27 (44.4 percent) through his first 10 A-10 games, including 8-10 during those two games against Temple and Saint Joseph’s.
That trend is similar to what Wright did during his freshman campaign as he started his non-league docket by shooting just 3-28 (10.7 percent) from beyond the arc. However, he turned it around in A-10 action as he hit 42.5 percent of his 3-point attempts (23-54) during conference play.
Wright’s 44.4 percent from 3 in conference action ranks seventh in the A-10 in league games only.
sPreadinG tHe WealtHEric Mosley’s 39 points and Chris Johnson’s 22 versus Massachusetts marked just the seventh and eighth times a St. Bonaventure player has scored 20 or more points in a game this season; however, it’s the fourth time in the last four games, and Mosley is responsible for the other two. Mosley netted 30 at Richmond on Feb. 16 and also tallied 21 at Rhode Island on Feb. 9. Demitrius Conger scored 21 against Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 23, Matthew Wright tallied 22 against Temple on Jan. 19 and Conger owns the other two 20-point performances (20 vs. Buffalo, 26 vs. Iona). Despite just eight 20-plus point individual performances this year, St. Bona still ranks as a top-100 offense nationally, averaging 71.7 points per game.
city oF BrotHerly loveWith their back-to-back wins in Philadelphia in the middle of January, the Bonnies won two games in Philly on A-10 opponents’ home courts in the same season for just the second time in program history. The other came during the 1999-2000 season when they claimed victories over La Salle and Saint Joseph’s. That 1999-2000 squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament before dropping a heartbreaker in overtime to Kentucky.

sizzlin’ Home cooKin’Over the last 46 years – since 1967 when the Reilly Center hosted its first complete season – St. Bonaventure is a dominant 44-2 in home openers, 43-3 when including a win which was later forfeited during the 2002-03 season. SBU won its first 27 home openers in the RC until a 76-74 loss to Canisius on Dec. 3, 1994. Bona’s has won eight straight home openers, dating back to Nov. 23, 2004, when it suffered a 74-58 setback to Marist.
Even more impressive, in games which have served as both home and season openers, the Bonnies have NEVER lost in the Reilly Center, going an emphatic 33-0 in such contests.
Overall, the Bonnies are 78-15 all-time in season-opening games and 81-12 in home openers. Under head coach Mark Schmidt, St. Bonaventure is 4-2 in season openers and 6-0 in home openers.
‘GatHer’inG Game actionSophomore Jordan Gathers saw a drastic increase in both minutes played and subsequently production beginning midway through his freshman season in 2011-12. After playing just double-digit minutes in one of the first 14 games last year (74 minutes total) and scoring five points, the California native logged double-digit action in 16 of the final 17 contests (288 minutes total) and netted 49 points. That’s an average of 5.2 minutes per game and .3 points per game over the first 14 games of the season, and 16.9 minutes and 2.8 points encompassing the last 17 outings, including making starts in each of the last nine games of the campaign.

2011-12 in BrieFSt. Bonaventure won its first Atlantic 10 Championship in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000 where it narrowly lost to 3rd-seeded ACC Champion Florida State in the Second Round, 66-63.
WHat’s Gone & WHat’s BacKThe Bonnies will look to replace 2012 A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and First Round NBA Draft pick Andrew Nicholson, who led St. Bonaventure in scoring (18.5) and rebounding (8.4). SBU also lost Da’Quan Cook (7.6 points / 4.6 rebounds) to graduation. While Nicholson has moved on to the Orlando Magic, Cook has taken his game oversees where he signed a professional contract with BC Yambol in Bulgaria’s National Basketball League.
Bona returns 10 letterwinners and three starters, including 2012 A-10 All-Championship Team member Demitrius Conger, who averaged 12.1 points and 6.2 rebounds – both second on the team to Nicholson. Conger has been named to the 2012-13 Preseason All-Big 4 First Team. Bonaventure had 10 players average at least 10 minutes per game in 2011-12, tied for the most by any team in the A-10. Mark Schmidt was named the Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and also claimed the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year.
Five-year resurGence By going 10-6 and finishing tied for 3rd in the A-10 in 2012, St. Bonaventure increased its conference win total and bettered its league finish for the fifth straight year since head coach Mark Schmidt took over the Bonnies in 2007-08. Additionally, St. Bonaventure is one of only seven Division I schools in the nation to have improved its RPI in each of the last five seasons.
Charl eston Southern, Detroit, Long Beach State, South Dakota St ate, Tennessee Te c h and Wichita State are the other six schools which have improved their RPI each of the last five years. Of the seven teams, SBU is the only one to hail from a conference that has been rated among the top-10 in the country in RPI in each of the last five years.
amonG tHe BestSBU finished in the top-5 in the A-10 in nine different statistical categories in 2011-12, and closed the season at 16th in the nation in free-throw percentage (76.1) and 25th in the country in rebounding margin (+5.5).
Battle tested early onThe Bonnies had a streak of five straight games decided by five points or less snapped earlier this year against Siena. By having five of their first six games decided by five points or less, it marked the first time in history that a season began by having five of its first six games decided by five points or less. It also marked just the third time in the 93-year history of the program that five consecutive games – at any point of the season – have been decided by five points or less. Bonaventure has never had a stretch of six straight games decided by five points or less.

St. Bonaventure’s slogan for the 2012-13 basketball season is “No Sleep ’Til Brooklyn.” The slogan, derived from the 1986 hit single by the Beastie Boys, was submitted by Patrick Didas, father of SBU freshman Cody Didas. It encapsulates the tireless effort needed to be put forth by the men’s and women’s basketball teams and their fans to reach the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship at the brand new, $1 billion Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The top 12 teams in the newly-formed 16-team A-10 on the men’s side advance to the A-10 Championship, which will be held entirely at the Barclays Center. The first three rounds of the women’s tournament will be held at Saint Joseph’s University before the championship game is played at Barclays. It will be the first women’s basketball game played in the state-of-the-art arena.
This marks the second year in a row that fans have had the opportunity to select the basketball slogan. Last season’s extremely popular “Defining Our Legacy” slogan came to fruition as the men’s team won its first A-10 Championship title and the women’s squad went undefeated in the A-10 and advanced to the Sweet 16.

uPcominG milestonesDemitrius Conger became the 39th player in school history to net 1,000 points for his career during the Bonnies’ loss to VCU on Jan. 12. Teammate Michael Davenport is 191 points shy of 1,000, but appears he will fall just short of reaching the milestone over SBU’s remaining four regular-season contests and potential postseason matchups. The last time Bonnies’ teammates reached 1,000 career points in the same season was in 2002-03, when junior Marques Green and senior Patricio Prato hit the milestone in back-to-back games against Duquesne (Jan. 25, 2003) and Cleveland State (Jan. 28, 2003), respectively.
Conger reached 500 career rebounds in a game earlier this year against Cleveland State and currently has 611, while Davenport once again appears he will fall short of reaching 500 career rebounds. Davenport needs 124 to get to 500. Conger also needs 19 more rebounds to crack the list of top-20 rebounders in program history. Last season Conger grabbed 199 boards.
Twenty-three St. Bonaventure players have recorded both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds during their careers. The last SBU player, besides Conger, to reach both career milestones was 2012 graduate Andrew Nicholson.

cJ’s Hot startDuring the offseason, head coach Mark Schmidt called Chris Johnson the one player who would surprise opponents this year. Despite a cold streak at the end of the non-conference schedule – which he snapped with a 17-point performance at George Washington – that’s exactly what the senior has done as he tied his then-career high for scoring in four of the first eight games, netting 19 points against Cornell, Canisius, Niagara and Arkansas State. Through those first eight games, he scored 126 points – just 72 points shy of what he scored all of last year. Additionally, the Nova Scotia native has already tied, or broken, a career high in nine other categories (points: 22; rebounds: 7; assists: 7, steals: 4; field goals made: 8; 3-point field goals made: 3; field goals attempted: 17; 3-point field goals attempted: 6; minutes played: 38).
HelPers, not GivinG it aWayOn the year, Jordan Gathers leads the Bonnies with a 1.95 assist-to-turnover ratio (41 assists, 21 turnovers), and Eric Mosley is second on the team at 1.43 (50 assists, 35 turnovers).
Finally a victory in rocFor the first time in seven tries, the Bonnies claimed a victory in Rochester when they defeated Niagara on Nov. 24, 80-75. SBU had lost those six games – against NC State, Virginia Tech, St. John’s, West Virginia, Syracuse and Saint Louis – by a combined 22 points, an average of 3.6 points per loss. The win in Blue Cross Arena was the first since a 79-78 decision over Charlotte in November of 2000.
FresH PerFormanceFreshman Dion Wright came off the bench against Cornell on Nov. 14 and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in just 16 minutes of action. The California product’s seven boards are the most by a Bonaventure freshman in his first road game since Mike Gansey grabbed six against Cleveland State on Nov. 20, 2001. Furthermore, Wright became the first Bona freshman to lead the team in rebounding in his first road game since Vidal Massiah against Siena on Nov. 24, 1998, when he had eight caroms.

The A-10 Championship banner is adorned on the same wall as the 1970 Final Four, 1977 NIT Championship and 2012 women’s 14-0 perfect A-10 regular season banners. The Second Round NCAA Tournament banner hangs from the Reilly Center rafters next to SBU’s 2002 NIT banner.

tHE CUPBOARD ISN’t REALLY tHAt BAREDespite losing A-10 Player of the Year, Associated Press Honorable Mention and top-20 NBA Draft Pick Andrew Nicholson, St. Bonaventure’s cupboard is fuller than many believe. In fact, last year the Bonnies were only outscored by 17 total points (574-557) when Nicholson was on bench. By comparison, with Nicholson in the game, Bonaventure was +190 (1,697-1,507).

Notes For Players Related To Their Points Scored With Nicholson On The Bench
Additionally, despite Nicholson’s overwhelming presence in the low blocks, the Bonnies were still able to produce points in the paint when he was not in the game. As a team, the Bonnies scored 944 total points in the paint last year. With Nicholson on the floor, that number was 728. Without him on the floor, that number was 216. In looking at the amount of minutes Nicholson played compared with point-in-the-paint produc-tion, there was an extremely minimal dropoff when he was on the bench. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .75 points in the paint per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, Bonaventure averaged .65 points in the paint per minute.
Perhaps even more stunning is that the Bonnies were actually more efficient rebounding the ball when Nicholson was on the bench. Nicholson finished second in the A-10 at 8.4 rebounds per game, and Bonaventure as a team led the conference and ranked 25th in the nation in rebound-ing margin at +5.5. With Nicholson on the floor, the Bonnies averaged .86 rebounds per minute. With Nicholson on the bench, SBU averaged .94 rebounds per minute.

The Atlantic 10 made a big splash in the conference realignment craze in 2011-12, adding Butler and VCU to bring the league’s total number to 16. The moves led prominent media members, like Andy Katz of ESPN.com to declare the A-10 the “Winners of Conference Realignment.”
Both programs made the jump to the A-10 immediately, thereby fortifying the league’s position as the best basketball-driven conference in Division I. The only non big six conference to have 41 at-large NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament selections in the past 20 years, including three in 2012, the A-10 has boasted 62 postseason appearances in the last decade. For the fi fth year in a row, the Atlantic 10 Conference earned at least three bids and multiple at-large bids into the NCAA Tournament. Over the last six years, the Atlantic 10 has had 12 at-large selections - the seventh most among all other Division I conferences. A record eight A-10 institutions received invitations to the 2012 NCAA and NIT postseason tournaments, more than all but two conferences.
The Butler announcement came on May 2. An NCAA Final Four participant in two of the last three years, Butler is the seventh A-10 program with at least one appearance in the Final Four. The Bulldogs have been to the NCAA Tournament in fi ve of the past six years and have advanced past the fi rst weekend in three of those years. In all, Butler has 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, and in fi ve of those the Bulldogs have advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Eight of those 11 trips have come since 2000. The Bulldogs have seven straight 20-win seasons and have had a winning season in 18 of the last 19 years.
VCU went to the Final Four in 2011. Along with the recent addition of Butler University, it brings the total A-10 programs with at least one appearance in the Final Four to eight. VCU has made 11 total trips to the NCAA Tournament with four of those coming in the last six years. In seven of those 11 trips, the Rams have won at least one game, including their run to the 2011 Final Four. VCU has had eight postseason appearances since 2000.
In addition, the moves solidify the A-10 standing in prime media markets, strengthening the league’s hold on the Richmond market and adding the Indianapolis market. In all, the A-10 is in seven of the top 25 media markets, including four of the top 10. All 16 conference members are in the top 65 media markets in the country. The Atlantic 10 media footprint reaches over 23 million households.

The Atlantic 10 Confernece ranked seventh among all conference in the fi nal RPI in 2011-12. The league boasted eight Top 100 teams, third among all leagues behind only the Big East and the Big 10. The eight teams equaled the SEC and was more than the ACC, the Big 12, the PAC-12 and the Mountain West. In addition, the league had Temple, and St. Bonaventure receiving poll votes at the end of the year. Temple, which was ranked at 21 in the AP Poll and 24th in the Coaches’ Poll in the fi nal week of the regular season, fi nished in the recieving votes category. St. Bonaventure joined that category after its A-10 title run. Xavier was ranked as high as eighth and Saint Louis cracked the top 25 early in 2011-12. Saint Louis, Dayton and Saint Joseph’s all received votes early in the season as well. Newcomer VCU was also among those teams receiving votes in both polls last season.

The Atlantic 10 Conference announced in September of 2011 that it had formed a fi ve-year partnership with the Barclays Center to bring the A-10 men’s basketball tournament to Brooklyn and the new arena, beginning in 2013. The joint announcement was made at the Barclays Center Showroom in Manhattan, N.Y.
It will mark the fi rst time the A-10 Championship, which sends its champion to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, will be held in metropolitan New York City and the fi rst time it will be played in a state-of-the-art new facility.
“The opportunity to partner with the Barclays Center and bring the Atlantic 10 Basketball Championship to New York has unlimited possibilities. Our teams will compete in the newest, state-of-the-art facility within the Atlantic 10 footprint and the number-one media market in the country,” stated Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade.
Scheduled to open in September, the Barclays Center will be a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue and the future home of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. The Barclays Center will off er approximately 18,200 seats for basketball and will have one of the most intimate seating confi gurations ever designed into a modern multi-purpose arena. The last time the Atlantic 10 Tournament was in an NBA building was in 2002 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia.
“We are thrilled for the Barclays Center to play host to one of men’s basketball’s most prestigious conference tournaments,” Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark said. “We appreciate our alliance with the Atlantic 10 as we position the Barclays Center as a signifi cant national collegiate sports venue.”
The highest concentration of Atlantic 10 alumni of any region in the county live and work in the New York metro area. There are 2.5 million people total in Brooklyn and 8.1 million total people in New York, an opportunity for the A-10’s premier event to be played on the biggest stage in the nation.
“Brooklyn and the surrounding metropolitan New York area is home to over 100,000 Atlantic 10 alumni; this combined with the eight-million plus population will give the Atlantic 10 an opportunity to grow the Championship to new heights,” said McGlade.
The move also places the championship into the largest media market in the nation and home to CBS Sports, the Atlantic 10’s television partner for the men’s basketball championship. CBS Sports carries several regular season A-10 games and the league’s championship title game is aired on CBS as part of the network’s Selection Sunday package.
The Atlantic 10 is one of the most successful and well-respected leagues for basketball. The A-10 has averaged more than three teams per year in the top 50 of the RPI, equal to the Southeastern Conference. For the last four years, the Atlantic 10 earned three bids into the NCAA Tournament, one of only six Division I conferences to do so. Over the last six years, the league has had 10 at-large selections - the seventh most in Division I - behind only the big six BCS leagues.

2012-13 St. Bonaventure BasketballSt. Bonaventure Individual Game-by-Game (as of Dec 27, 2012)
Will have three years of playing eligibility beginning as a sophomore in the 2013-14 season. Not allowed to play in games during the •2012-13 season due to the NCAA’s “delayed enrollment” ruling. Since more than a year passed between Runs’ high school graduation date and his enrollment at St. Bonaventure, the NCAA mandates that he “sit the year in residency” before becoming eligible.Runs graduated from high school in the spring of 2010 and took a year off from schooling and basketball competition before enrolling at •Spain’s Canaries Basketball Academy (CBA) in the fall of 2011. The Netherlands native played in 22 games at CBA during the 2011-12 season. That competition – combined with the “delayed enrollment” – caused him to lose a year of eligibility.

19th coach in now the 93rd season of basketball at St. Bonaventure. •
Schmidt was recognized for his remarkable work in rebuilding the Bonnies by being named the •2012 Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. He was also named the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Men’s Division I Coach of the Year.
Schmidt was instrumental in the development of 2012 A-10 Player of the Year and AP Honorable •Mention All-American Andrew Nicholson, who ended his career ranked second in school history in scoring (2,103 points) and fourth in rebounds (887). Nicholson was selected by the Orlando Magic in the First Round of the 2012 NBA Draft with the 19th overall pick.
SBU’s 20 victories overall and 10 in the Atlantic 10 in 2011-12 were its most since the 1999-•2000 season, the last time a Bona team had earned an NCAA Tournament bid. The 10 victories also marked just the fourth time in history a Bonaventure team reached double-digit conference triumphs.
In May 2012, St. Bonaventure rewarded Schmidt with a five-year contract extension that runs •through the conclusion of the 2018-19 season.
Ahead of schedule with respect to his previous head coaching stint at Robert Morris. During his third •and fourth season at RMU, Schmidt posted back-to-back seasons with the same number of wins (14) before guiding the team to a record over .500 (15-14). He guided SBU to 15-win seasons in year two and three, before going over .500 in year four and eight games over in year five last season.
Has recruited and developed 10 players who were drafted into the NBA, including First-Round picks •James Posey (#18), David West (#18) and Nicholson.
Success at RMU: brought in Tony Lee, who in 2007-08 was the NEC Player of the Year and currently •owns that school’s career rebounding record (751); Jeremy Chappell was 2008-09 NEC POY and graduated as school’s all-time leader in 3-point field goals, double-figure scoring games, games played and starts.
