Amazing women can do amazing things, right? Well, after Hadassah Southern’s Mid-Winter Board meeting on November 5 – 6, 2016, I believe that to be true. We had 40 members join us for our board meeting in Knoxville, to look into the future, and align our unit’s plans with our national priorities. Before we sat down with pen to paper to see where our road map was leading us, we had a bit of fun, where we focused on working together to achieve our goals. Dan Grabel, Co-Owner of Camp Manitowa in Benton IL, gave us four tasks to accomplish, but only if we figured out how to work together -- and after many laughs, triumphs and yes. some failures -- as always, we figured it out!!! We also had our Youth Aliyah National Chair Carol Goodman Kauffman show us all the wonderful things we are doing in

Shalom Hadassah Southern!

Hadassah with our Youth Aliyah villages and the thousands of children’s lives we affect each day in a positive way. Thank you for all those who were able to join us and, as you read below our national priorities, think of all the ways that you as a member can help us reach our highest po-tential. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the volunteer work you do.

Bonnie Boring, Hadassah Southern President

National Priorities 2017

Zionism/Israel Hadassah will serve as a leader in the movement to revitalize confidence in, and support for, a strong Israel. It will expose, engage, educate and advocate with its 300,000 members and the public to ensure awareness of the modern State of Israel. It will enter into collaborations with oth-er Zionist organizations to broaden its reach to, and strengthen its impact on, young women who lack the knowledge and passion to understand and identify with modern Zionism.

HMO/Health Hadassah will continue to partner with the HMO in its world class lifesaving research and in its care of the people of Israel. Hadassah will take a National leadership role in bringing to its mem-bers and others knowledge of cutting edge research and focus on women’s health issues through education and advocacy.

Domestic Advocacy Hadassah will elevate advocacy and education to reposition the organization as the leader in en-gagement and empowerment, especially with issues related to gender equity in medicine. Hadas-sah will use the power of its 300,000 members and supporters to rally for, and advance, solutions to gender equity in medical research, human trafficking and preventive health care. Hadassah will partner with other organizations with like values to further the domestic agenda

Ido Reichman-Eisikovits, Jewish National Fund and Rabbi Barry Weinstein, Moderator. Their excellent presentations informed us of planning opportunities regarding water conservation and opportunities to make the desert bloom. This stimulating afternoon was a splendid chance to find out how we can make a difference in our community. Special thanks to Rabbi Barry Weinstein who was the moving force for this program and who secured the beautiful venue at the IBM building overlooking the Mississippi. Kudos to De’Anna Ernst for her wonderful graphic designs and help with the program. We are blessed in Baton Rouge with our talented members and associates.

On November 13, 2016 Baton Rouge Hadassah sponsored a program entitled “Water-Local Sources, Global Solutions”. The Panel consisted of Dr. Charles Groat, President and CEO of Water Institute of the Gulf, Elizabeth Thomas, President & CEO Center for Planning Excellence,

Hadassah Nashville

Nashville – We held our annual Progressive Sukkah Hop that was great fun! Not only did we travel from House 1 to House 2 to House 3 and back to House 1, we learned more about Hadassah’s good works as we drove, and visited three Sukkahs on a lovely (somewhat damp) evening.

This Giving Tuesday I am supporting Hadassah because of Hadassah’s advocacy for women and civil rights, gender equity in medicine (GEM), its unilateral support of Israel, and the Hadassah Medical Organization.- Dana Waxler, Hadassah supporter

Letter from President Ellen Hershkin to all Hadassah Members and Supporters

Dear Friends,Now more than ever, many of us need a moment to come together, to take stock. To replenish our inner strengths. Please do take this moment to replenish. Because Hadassah needs you — urgently — in the days and weeks and months ahead. There is a lot of work ahead of us. For women’s health. For gender equity. For Israel. Since our founding, Hadassah’s members have joined together in communities around the country to achieve our mission. We do this across lines of geography, across political aisles, and across generations, l’dor v’dor. Together, we will build on this legacy. Over the last 104 years, we have seen so many positive changes for women and Zionism, and we have faced far too much terror and trauma. In his first address to the nation as President-elect, Donald Trump chose to focus on uniting the American people. We look forward to working with his Administration to strengthen the US-Israel relationship, promote gender equity, and address other issues im-portant to us as Zionists and women. At the same time, we will speak out loudly and clearly to protect the advances we have made for women’s health, and to push forward for more gains. Let us be clear, we are not ready to compromise our rights. We will need to stand up for them. On Tuesday night, President-elect Trump pledged to work toward seeking common ground. We urge him — and all our nation’s leaders — to work diligently to achieve these goals. As advocates of women’s health equity, Hadassah will stand firm to ensure that wom-en are treated equally to healthcare services, we will work tirelessly so that women with dis-abilities or pre-existing conditions receive the healthcare coverage they deserve, and we will continue to fight for access to essential, life-saving women’s preventive health services. Our work here at Hadassah is far from done. The current Congress can still take action before the session ends. Visit the Hadassah National Action Center to send a message to your elected officials in support of Israel, the Research for All Act, or another one of Hadassah’s policy priorities. Be the first to hear about new policy updates and opportunities for action by signing up for our advocacy alert emails. With 330,000 members, Associates and supporters — located in every congressional district — we can demonstrate the Power of Women Who Do. And we can do more. We can grow that power.

Shabbat Shalom.Ellen HershkinNational President

Hen Mazzig: Making Zionism a Model for Everyone“Zionism is a model for everyone,” says Hen Mazzig, Israeli writer, international speaker, social media activist and Israel advocate and the November speaker for Defining Zionism, Hadassah’s provocative dialogue series.

In these six short, easy-to-share video clips, the former IDF commander talks about finding common ground to promote Zionism and fight BDS, moving beyond misconceptions, and how his deeply personal version of Zionism has been shaped by the history of his family, Berber Jews from Tunisia who were among 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries, and his experience in a special IDF humanitarian unit.
