IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?
Yes, because GBV contravenes Human Rights specifically the rights of women & children.
It is detrimental to society as a whole in that it feeds the cycle of GBV thus is carried on to subsequent generations.
It is linked to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS.

Awareness raising campaigns such as dialogues, conversations.
Educational Programmes such as
Dramas, Debates etc. Commemoration of Special Days
such Day of the African Child etc. Competitions on essay writing on
GBV themes.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE PROJECT?
Time frame is spread over several months.
Because of the nature of GBV, programmes are ongoing until satisfactory level of reduction in GBV is reached.

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?
Increase in the number of reported cases due to increased awareness.
Myths & Misconceptions unearthed and
dispelled. Community Participation in community
dialogues especially men.
Change in cultural & traditional belief system(though painfully slow).

IMPACT (BASED ON THE SADC PROTOCOL TARGETS)
Article 26-women have been capacitated on decision making on matters of sexual reproductive health
such as contraception. Women have been capacitated on
PMTCT too. Article 27-AMICAALL makes referrals
and provides ART education and therapy for PLWHA.

EFFECTIVENESS
Less tolerance towards GBV (increase in reporting without fear of retribution)
Recognition of established community
structures such as community police, child protection committees.
Active participation of men and community leaders in GBV initiatives.
Few success stories have been reported.

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION
It is sustainable in that to ensure continuity AMICAALL enrols community volunteers who train their
communities. Yes, it can be replicated but should be
flexible to take into account the different structured communities with their different characteristics.

LESSONS LEARNED
The greatest obstacle to the Prevention of GBV are cultural and traditional beliefs held by males.
Subservience of females to the control of males, the belief that women and children are property contribute to prevalence of GBV.
There are still widely held myths & misconceptions on GBV .PROJECTS: P
