O n behalf of the City Council and City employees, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Bondurant — a city at the

crossroads of growth and opportunity. Bondurant is located along Highway 65 close to Interstate 80 and in close proximity to the large-city amenities of Des Moines, yet distant enough to provide a small-town lifestyle. The city recently experienced another large valuation growth last year, with an 18 percent increase from the previous fiscal year. This upward trend has continued over the last several years and clearly demonstrates Bondurant’s attractiveness to residents and businesses. As a primary destination, we have convenient access to shopping, dining, entertainment, amusement parks, bike/walking trails and regional airport services. Our City Council priorities focus on improving city services and promoting viable opportunities to meet the needs of a growing community. Those areas include supporting public education, infrastructure improvements, public safety, economic development, diverse residential growth, and bikeways and open spaces. Our great city has so much to offer. From education to recreation, we believe there is something here for everyone and every business. We have a highly experienced Fire Department and EMS service that continues to be one of the best in the area. You will also find a state-of-the-art public library; miles of paved trails; fishing and canoeing opportunities; restaurants; financial, dentistry, chiropractic and veterinary services; a grocery store and, in general, a business community that is collaborating and thriving. If you are looking for recreational activities, you are in the right place. Our beautiful parks and recreation facilities provide a remarkable quality of life for residents. In addition to some of the best softball and baseball fields in Iowa, located at Bondurant Recreational Sports Complex, we also have some of the best maintained soccer fields in the county, located next to the American Legion, and we are expanding our recreational fields to include soccer fields. The City purchased 24 additional acres at BRSC and new soccer fields will open for play in Fall of 2019. You’ll find a lake stocked with rainbow trout, picnic shelters and a paved walking path around the Lake Petocka waterfront. The path is part of a growing trail system made possible through years of careful planning and

generous grants. Over the last few years, the City has expanded the biking/walking trails connecting to the Chichaqua Valley Trail with additional trail connections to surrounding communities. A great place along the trail system is the Bondurant Trailhead Depot to rest or start your adventure. The inner-city trails continue to expand with support of local non-profits, Bondurant Community Foundation and the Lohse Family Foundation. A southern trail connection from the Bondurant Trailhead was recently added with access to the community Gateway Park — the Porch Swing and Fireflies display. The City also has parks and playground equipment located within residential neighborhoods, requires green space in all new developments, and is adding more equipment this year. Currently we are also working to create beautiful spaces in Eagle Park. The park has recently been cleared and will have butterfly gardens and native grasses planted in it, as well as several trees. Ultimately, the park will have a soft walking path around the ponds in it. The ponds in Eagle Park are also great places for fishing! Arts and cultural activities enhance the quality of life for our residents. In support of this effort, the Bondurant Community Foundation has funded a public art display in Gateway Park. Porch Swings and Fireflies was dedicated last June. A portion of the project was supported by grant dollars from the Iowa Art Council with remaining grant dollars planned to support a variety of community improvements. Our residents take great pride in Bondurant’s uniqueness and offer a broad range of year-round civic and cultural events such as our annual Bondurant Summerfest, Pedal Chichaqua Valley Trail, Bondu Spook-tacular, Jazz in July, Battle of the Bands, Celebrate Bondurant, Bondurant Farmers Market and many other events. If you are moving to Bondurant for work, school or simply the great quality of life, please know that our area is a growing community offering an ideal environment in which families and businesses can flourish. The City Council and I are committed to collaborating with city organizations/boards, the school district, private businesses, and the citizens of Bondurant to improve the overall quality of life. Together we can help sustain appealing growth, meet the needs of the citizens, and keep Bondurant brimming with opportunity.

T he Bondurant Community Library (BCL) is an integral part of the community and provides the residents and surrounding area with a wide variety of popular and educational materials,

programs, resources and services that facilitate their day-to-day lives and expand their personal and intellectual development. The library supports life-long learning, early literacy development, cultural and recreational activities, and the technology and information needs of the people it serves. BCL seeks to build knowledge, understanding, appreciation and wisdom in a welcoming environment.

Check out our monthly printed and online calendars for future events such as weekly story times, after-school games, and movie and craft days. You’ll also find out about our monthly book discussion and other adult programs such as a constructing a rain barrel demonstration, adult coloring, SHIIP programs and more. The annual summer reading program events are also featured on our calendars. This year’s programs include magician Rick Brammer, Blank Park Zoo, Absolute Science, Science Center of Iowa, Des Moines Symphony Petting Zoo, Karaoke Fun, Miss Carole, Hanson Family and Drum Safari. BCL also believes in community outreach and promoting early childhood literacy - we visit pre-schools, daycares and our local assisted living facility, including a new Story Time outreach program to the Wolf Creek Subdivision. We also provide materials to in-home daycare providers upon request.

BCL provides free computer access and wi-fi. We provide photocopying,

faxing and scanning services, notary and test proctoring. Stop in and browse books through our online catalog, and don’t forget our downloadable audio, ebooks, and video through our Bridges database for your e-reader too! Many excellent databases are offered through our website, www.bondurant.lib.ia.us. They include Hoolpa resource for ebooks, downloadable audio, comic books, and streaming video; Gale and Credo Resources (excellent source for researching magazine articles); Learning Express (review skills and prepare for tests); Transparent Languages (on-line language learning database); ABC Mouse (3,500+ interactive books, educational games, and puzzles free for in-library use); TumbleBook Library (animated talking picture books and read-alongs); and Zinio (on-line downloadable magazines). Don’t forget the library’s newest service, The Adventure Pass program. This program allows patrons to check out free passes to local Des Moines area venues including: Blank Park Zoo, Des Moines Botanical Garden, Living History Farms and the Science Center of Iowa.

BRANCH AND LIMB DISPOSALCity of Bondurant residents can now drop off branches and limbs on the first Saturday of each month between 8 a .m . and noon at the corner of Pleasant Street N .E . and N .E . 86th Avenue . Branch and limbs do not include leaves, grass clippings or garden waste . These items should be bagged and placed out for yard waste collection on Wednesdays . The branch and limb drop-off site is approximately 3/4 mile north of Lake Petocka . The last date for branch and limb drop off will be Nov . 3, 2018 .

Make sure to join us in June at Lake Petocka for our annual Youth Fishing Derby, or stop on out to the Fire Station in July for our Touch-A Truck event! Brave the cold, February winter and meet us at the Bondurant Regional Trailhead for our annual Winter Chowder 10-Mile Bike Ride down the Chichaqua Valley Trail! If indoor activities are more your niche, try your hand at our Poker Tournament in January or bring the kiddos to a Kids in the Kitchen class held at the Bondurant Community Library!

BRSC EXPANSIONThe City took the opportunity this year to purchase 24 additional acres of park land west of the current Bondurant Recreational Sports Complex. Staff worked with the Soccer Club and Little League (Baseball and Softball) to develop a plan on how to maximize the use of the space. We hope to be able to grade over the winter and seed in order to potentially have soccer fields ready for Fall of 2019. It will take longer to develop the additional ballfields, as they are more expensive to construct, and there is currently no funding to accomplish that. However, the space will be graded and ready for future development.

EAGLE PARKBondurant resident Nic Robinson has graciously donated $12,750 to the City that has been used to clean up the park as the first step in the 2013 Park, Trail and Greenway Master Plan. In the spring of 2018, the City will install two separate butterfly gardens filled with native plantings designed by Horticultural Specialist Derek McKay of Ted Lare Garden and Design. In the fall of 2018, Mr. McKay will be planting prairie grasses towards the back half of the park around the retention ponds. In the future, the third phase of the project will be to install a natural interpretative trail with outlooks.

Economic development of Bondurant

E ast Polk Innovation Collaborative serves as the Economic Development driver for the cities of Bondurant,

Altoona, Mitchellville and Pleasant Hill. The Mission of East Polk Innovation Collaborative (EPIC) is to aggressively pursue a focused growth agenda that recognizes and supports the unique needs and character of each EPIC community, markets the EPIC region as a premiere location within the Greater Des Moines metropolitan area and continually fosters a collaborative environment among EPIC communities.

With development expanding into the region rapidly over the past few years, it is our job to promote and facilitate. We do this in several ways. We market our region to prospective companies in the logistics, manufacturing, retail and data center industries through trade shows and aggressive online marketing campaigns.

We also work with local developers, land owners and stakeholders to assist with the development process. We market land and buildings that are for sale. As a conduit for all parties, we aim to streamline the development process.

An endeavor that we have taken on this year is the State of Iowa’s Certified Site Process. A growing trend in the site selection industry has been the short turnaround time from when a company finds a site and when they want to start building. We are working with Iowa Economic Development Authority to certify a site in Bondurant. This would tell the prospective company that our site is ready to be developed right away. The certified site program requires knowledge of all infrastructure (water, sewer, roads, electric/gas lines etc.) topography, any environmental issues with the property, city permitting process and any other factors that could affect

the site. We think this rigorous project will pay off in the long run. Stay tuned!

One of the most important things we do is work with our existing businesses. Ensuring that our businesses are receiving the services they need to be successful is paramount. Additionally, we can assist their growth through several state and local programs.
