STEELPOORT - ‘n Klein vegtertjie.

assisted the injured. They were immediately transported to Lydenburg Hospital. The driver had two passengers in the car and they had also been injured. The patients are recovering in the local hospital,” Broekman added.
According to a witness at the scene everything happened so fast. “We just saw a car swerving on the road and even if the two women wanted to escape they could not.”
Lydenburg Police spokesman, Sgt Elizabeth Selwaletau Magoa, said a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving had been opened.
BURGERSFORT - Five suspects are still at large after Choppies Supermarket was robbed on July 13. The incident took place at about 18:40 when three suspects entered the store while two others kept watch at the entrance.
“The three men acted like shoppers when they entered the supermarket. After gaining access to the store they pulled out pistols to threaten the employees. The other two stood by the entrance armed with a pistol and shotgun to prevent people from entering or leaving. The three armed suspects inside took money from the tills and ordered the employees to open the cash safe. The incident lasted for a matter of 10 to 15 minutes. They fl ed the scene in a silver Colt bakkie,” reported Jan Oosthuizen, owner of National Guarding Security Services.
No one was injured during the robbery and the local police, with the help of National Guarding, assisted the traumatised staff members at the scene. The police were still investigating the robbery and at this stage they could not reveal the amount of money that had been stolen.
National Guarding requests the community to share any information that they might have regarding the fi ve suspects.

Mnr.

lanklaas ontsmet is.

geweier is. Volgens mnr. Dumisani Malamule,

Police operation leads to a decrease in crime
LYDENBURG - Recently the local SAPS successfully launched Operation Fiela in an attempt to combat crime in town.
Various other SAPS stations from around town and Phoenix Flying Squad, K9 and Mounted Security Squad formed part of the operation.
According to station commander of Lydenburg SAPS, Col Hans Putter, this was organised on account of illegal foreigners in the Marikana settlement which contributes to a large number of crimes in the Lydenburg station precinct.
“Illegal foreigners have settled in the area and are involved in dealing in drugs. The Marikana community is aggressive, which hampers normal policing duties. Stolen goods are being sold as a form of income due to the fact that the majority of these people are unemployed.”
He said normal day-to-day operations seemed to be ineffective to police the local taxi rank.
“Information gathered by crime intelligence indicated that drugs, such as dagga and nyaope, were being sold at the taxi rank by vendors. The rank is also being used to sell stolen property from burglaries at residential premises and theft out of motor vehicles.”
More than 140 officers gathered at Rooikat Park on the Friday morning to discuss the roll-out of the operation. From there they dispatched into smaller groups to perform various clamp downs in specific areas in town.
All roads leading towards town were blocked and vehicles were searched. Putter and officers of the White River K9 Unit also managed to confiscate a large amount of drugs, consisting of heroin, full-moon crack cocaine and 18 bags of Khat in an alley in Kantoor Street.
The drugs were cleverly stashed in air vents in the public restrooms of the rooms being rented out in the alley. Because no

drugs were found in the possession of four suspects at the scene, no arrests could be made.
Lydenburg SAPS also managed to arrest no less than 19 illegal immigrants during this operation which will be deported to their country of origin.
Putter said that the operation was a huge success and that crime has decreased drastically.
LYDENBURG - A SAPS K9 Unit constable appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, August 3 for allegedly defeating the ends of justice and for corruption.
This follows after he was arrested by the Hawks during a sting operation on Friday, July 31.
According to the acting Hawks spokesman, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the constable was arrested following an investigation into a report by a Lydenburg resident. “A complainant opened a case with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) head office in which
Bridget Mpande he alleged the constable unlawfully took R50 000 from them,” he said.
“It is reported that the accused stopped two men who were suspected of dealing in illicit cigarettes on Tuesday, June 21. He found R510 000 cash in their car. The police constable threatened to arrest them and confiscated the money. He loaded them into the police van and drove to Lydenburg industrial area where he took R50 000 and gave them R460 000 back,” said Mulaudzi.
“The two men refused to take the money and reported the matter to DPCI. The case was investigated which lead to the arrest of the officer,” he said. The constable remains in custody and the case was postponed to Wednesday, August 12.

PRAKTISEER - The days of Tubatse residents travelling long distances to renew their licences or to do their driver’s licence tests have finally came to an end.
The Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM) recently announced that their station was now operating again.
“The Praktiseer Traffic Station is now operating and locals are advised to utilise it,” GTM spokesman, Mr Thabiso Mokoena revealed.
Mokoena added that the renovations for the station had not yet been finalised, “We are busy with the upgrading of the ablution facilities, electrical and technical problems as well as the structure of the building. We are also in the process of equipping

The centre was shut down back in March by the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport as they viewed the working conditions was not up to standard. The staff
and clients previously utilized the toilets of neighbouring offices.
Previously, learners and motorists who needed help with their expiring driver’s licences were turned away and advised to
travel to Lydenburg or to Lebowakgomo traffic stations for assistance.
It’s not the first time the station makes the headlines for wrong reasons. In 2012, staff downed tools in demand of water at the station. Locals highlighted that they hope the station’s problems were water under the bridge.

LYDENBURG - It seems that winds of change are blowing in Thaba Chweu Municipality (TCM).
The newly elected mayor, chief whip and members of the mayoral committee (MMCs) said they would do their utmost to return TCM back to its former glory.
Ms Tiny Mabuza, MMC for finance and technical support, told the newspaper that the appointment of the new committee members was in line with their turnaround strategy.
“We would like the community to come forward so that we can work collectively together, even with the opposition, because we as the MMCs alone cannot work without support, but together we can do
more,” she said.Mr Marcus Mashego, MMC
for corporate services and human settlements, said since they had been joined by Mabuza, who came from the Ehlanzeni District Municipality, they could ensure that TCM would rise again.
“All the portfolios are linked. Finance, technical, corporate, community services and human settlement work hand in hand.
“I can assure the community that we will be working together
supporting the newly elected mayor to ensure that service delivery will be a priority.
“With the team that has been assembled now, we are sure that we will succeed,” he said.
The mayor, Ms Selina Mashego, said the municipality had a “very big elephant called Eskom”.
“We want to make sure that we work with the community to ensure that we pay the Eskom account. This is also relevant to the water crisis the town has been facing the past couple of days. We need to make sure that there is water in each and every area of TCM.
“I will do my best to serve as mayor. I will also make sure to visit each area of town to find out what problems residents are experiencing,” she added.
The new mayoral committee comprises Ms Maskososana Masilela (chief whip), Mr Idos Mokoena (MMC for technical services), Ms Selina Mashego (mayor), Ms Tiny Mabuza (MMC for finance and technical support), Mr Marcus Mashego (MMC for corporate services and human settlement) and Ms Susan Magagula (Speaker).

“The stop sign is hidden and we only see it when we’re close by, because it’s covered by bushy and tall thorn trees,” one of the parents, Mr Thabo Madalane complained.
He suggested that the sign be made higher to enable visibility.
When Steelburger/Lydenburg News visited the site, people
drove past the stop sign without even yielding.
Learners attending Mogale wa Bagale confirmed that drivers never stopped at this sign.
“We are used to seeing them passing without slowing down, we are not sure if they do it on purpose or indeed they cannot see the sign,” one learner said.
Spokesman for the Greater Tubatse Municipality, Mr Thabiso Mokoena, said it was not responsible for cleaning up national roads.
He referred all the questions to the Road Agency Limpopo, which did not respond to questions before going to print.

Frik Rousseau, national federal councillor of the FF+ in Lydenburg writes:
The Freedom Front Plus of Lydenburg wishes the new mayor of TCM, Ms Selina Mashego, the best of luck with her endeavours. She has an open-door policy and is a compassionate person proven by her visits to Lelievlei to improve the livelihood of the poor and underprivileged.
There is a lot of work that has to be done
in TCM. The people want economical opportunities and need better services and roads. Discipline within TCM must take priority. We know she will perform her functions to the best of her ability. I would like to close with the following quote of Nelson Mandela: “There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again, before we reach the mountain top of our desires.”

Mnr.

Tournament helps children perfect their cricket skills
bowling and fi elding techniques.Elize Lotter, organiser of the games, told
Steelburger/Lydenburg News that their school had enormous natural talent in cricket.
“If we can nurture the talent we have, we will produce some great cricketers from our shores. We have our own Dale Steyn and Hashim Amla among these young boys and girls. I was surprised to see some of the learners doing the wrist and fi nger spinning.”
She thanked KFC, Burgersfort Spur and local resident Faizal Abdullah for sponsoring the games. Minicricket is considered the fi rst phase of cricket that aspirant young boys and girls are introduced to.
This softball level gives children the enjoyment that comes with participating in a team sport and also gets them acquainted with the basics.
These games are shorter than the regular ones, taking into account the ability and attention span of the younger players.
