By Tresa EricksonHot temperatures call for cool fun. Whatever activity

you're involved in this summer, take caution if itinvolves water. Sun and water can make for a deadlycombination, as water reflects and amplifies the sun'srays, increasing the potential for sunburn and otherdamage.

The sun emits three types of rays: UVA, UVB andUVC. The ozone layer prevents UVC rays from enter-ing the earth's atmosphere. There is no natural pro-tective barrier against UVA and UVB rays out-side of the melanin in your skin, which will absorbsome, but not all, of the dangerous rays before anydamage occurs. Over time, UVA and UVB rays canlead to premature aging, cataracts, skin cancer andother conditions. Generally, the darker your skin,the more melanin you have and the lower your riskof sun damage. No one, however, has enoughmelanin to forgo protective measures altogether.

For the best results, you should limit your time out-doors when the sun's rays are at their harshest, usuallybetween 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., although location can alsofactor into the equation. Higher altitudes in latitudes close tothe equator may extend the time period and call for extra pro-tection outside. Seasonal temperatures may also come intoplay. Hot temperatures demand diligent sun protection.Cold temperatures with snow and ice demand it as well,as snow and ice reflect and amplify the sun's rays justlike water. Don't be fooled by cool, cloudy days either.Just because you can't see the sun doesn't mean it isn't there emitting UVA and UVBrays.

Wherever you live, stay indoors as much as possible during times of harsh sun.Reserve your water fun for the early morning or the late afternoon. If you must goout, cover up. Wear clothing made of sun-protective material. This will keep the sun'srays from penetrating your skin. Apply a waterproof/sweatproof sunscreen with a highSPF to all areas of your skin exposed to the sun. Make sure you use one that guardsagainst both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it 30 minutes before you go outside and reap-ply it every few hours thereafter. When out of the water, wear a hat and sunglasseswith 100% UV protection.

The sun can do damage no matter what it's like outside, and some medications canexacerbate its effects. Be aware of this and take the time to find out if any of the med-ications you are taking make you sun sensitive. If so, take extra precautions whenoutdoors.

Protecting your body from the damaging effects of the sun is important. Just askanyone who has had a bout with skin cancer. It is imperative that you make the effortto be sun safe, especially when you are on, in or around water or some form of it. Doyour best to cover up, whether sun sensitive or not. Your health depends upon it!

Acid rain?Though it might not garner the hot-button head-

lines of other environmental issues, acid rain remainsa serious problem for the environment, affecting largeparts of both the United States and Canada.

According to the Environmental ProtectionAgency, "acid rain" refers to a mixture of wet and drydeposited materials from the atmosphere. These mate-rials contain abnormally high amounts of nitric andsulfuric acids. The precursors of acid rain formationcan be both natural sources, such as decaying vegeta-tion or volcanoes, or man-made sources such as emis-sions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that resultfrom fossil fuel combustion. When these gases reactin the atmosphere with water, oxygen and otherchemicals, acidic compounds are formed and acidrain occurs.

How Is Acid Rain Measured?

Acid rain is measured using a pH scale, whichmeasures how acidic or basic a substance is. The pHscale ranges between 0 and 14, and the lower the pHvalue the more acidic the substance is. For example,water is considered neutral and is therefore a 7 on thepH scale. Anything with a pH less than 7 is thereforeacidic. Each whole pH value below 7 is 10 timesmore acidic than the next highest value. So a sub-stance with a pH value of 5 is 10 times more acidicthan one with a pH value of 6.

What Are the Effects of Acid Rain?

Acid rain causes a host of dangerous side effects,including the acidification of lakes and streams. Inaddition, acid rain can damage trees at high eleva-tions.

•Acidification of lakes and streams: Nowhere arethe ecological effects of acid rain more noticeablethan in marine environments, which include lakes,streams and marshes. After falling on forests, fieldsand even buildings, acid rain then flows into streams,lakes and marshes. Though some lakes are naturallyacidic, others are more sensitive thanks to soils thataren't adept at neutralizing acidic compounds. Whenthe water and soil cannot neutralize the acid, the lakesand streams then become acidic.

This acidification is prevalent. In a NationalSurface Weather Survey that investigated the effectsof acidic deposition in more than 1,000 lakes largerthan 10 acres and in thousands of miles of streamsresearchers believed to be sensitive to acidification,

acid rain caused acidity in 75 percent of the acidiclakes and roughly 50 percent of the acidic streams.This is notable because acid rain results in the releaseof aluminum from soils and into the lakes andstreams, which directly threatens marine life. In addi-tion, when a lake or stream has an especially low pHlevel, this can cause chronic stress in fish that threat-ens their growth and makes them less able to competefor food and habitat.

•Slower growth of forests: Extensive analysis hasalso discovered a correlation between acid rain andthe slow growth of forests. Acid rain has also beenimplicated in forest and soil degradation in the east-ern U.S., especially in higher elevation forests such asthose in the Appalachian Mountains from Maine toGeorgia. Though acid rain is just one contributingfactor to this degradation (among other things,researchers note the role of air pollutants, drought anddisease in soil degradation), it is a key component toslower growth and degradation of many of thenation's forests.

Though acid rain does not usually kill trees, it doesweaken them. In addition to damaging trees' leaves,acidic water that results from acid rain dissolves thenutrients and helpful minerals in the soil, washingthese nutrients and minerals away before the treeshave had the chance to use them to grow. Whiledoing so, acid rain is also causing the release of toxicsubstances like aluminum into the soil. This combina-tion of lost nutrients and increased aluminum in thesoil is, according to many researchers, one prominentway in which acid rain is harming trees and forestsacross the country.

•Human health: Humans are not immune to theharmful side effects of acid rain. Though walking inacid rain or swimming in an acidic lake is not neces-sarily dangerous, the pollutants that cause acid raincan be harmful to human health. When the two pollu-tants that cause acid rain - sulfur dioxide and nitrogenoxide, interact in the atmosphere - they can beinhaled deep into people's lungs. Numerous scientificstudies have identified a relationship between elevat-ed levels of these fine particles and increased illnessand premature death from heart and lung disorders.So while acid rain itself might not be a direct threat tohuman health, the elements necessary to its formationvery well could be.

•1934: The Federal Communications Commission iscreated. The FCC is charged with regulating all non-federal government use of the radio spectrum (includ-ing radio and television broadcasting) and all interstatetelecommunications (wire, satellite and cable) as wellas all international communications that originate orterminate in the United States.

•1967: Famed fighter Muhammad Ali is convictedfor refusing entry into the U.S. Army.

•1977: Bishop John Neumann becomes the firstmale saint from the United States. Though Neumannwas born in Bohemia, which is now the CzechRepublic, he eventually became an American citizen.The proposal for canonization began on December 20,1976. A total of four proven miracles attributed to asaint must be completed before someone is declared asaint. Three miracles that were very profound wereattributed to Neumann, so Pope Paul VI said there wasno need to find a fourth miracle to declare Neumann asaint.

•1987: "Ben & Jerry" unveils its newest ice creamflavor, "Cherry Garcia," with the support of GratefulDead frontman Jerry Garcia.

•2002: Hamid Karzai is sworn in as president ofAfghanistan. Considered well educated, westernizedand stylish, Karzai was often welcomed by foreigngovernments and made many Western friends.

Steak Sandwich withGrilled Onions

All modesty aside, this is the ultimatesteak sandwich -- marinated grilled flanksteak mingles with hefty slices of grilledonion, ripe tomato and peppery arugulaleaves.

1/4 cup soy sauce1/4 cup balsamic vinegar1 tablespoon brown sugar1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves1/4 teaspoon ground pepper1 (1 1/4-pound) beef flank steak1 medium (8-ounce) red onion, cut

into 4 thick slices8 slices sourdough bread, toasted

on grill if you like2 medium ripe tomatoes, sliced1 bunch arugula, tough stems dis-

carded

1. In large self-sealing plastic bag,mix soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, thyme andpepper. Add steak to marinade, turning tocoat. Seal bag, pressing out excess air.Place bag on plate; let stand 15 minutesat room temperature or 1 hour in refrig-erator, turning over several times.

2. Meanwhile, for easier handling,insert 1 long metal skewer horizontallythrough onion slices; set aside. Preparecharcoal fire or preheat gas grill for cov-ered direct grilling over medium heat.

3. Remove steak from marinade; pourmarinade into 1-quart saucepan. Heatmarinade over high heat to boiling; boil2 minutes.

4. Place steak and onion slices on hotgrill rack. Cover grill and cook steak andonion 12 to 15 minutes or until onionsare browned and tender and meat ismedium-rare, brushing both with mari-nade occasionally and turning both overonce. Transfer steak to cutting board;separate onion into rings.

5. Thinly slice steak diagonally acrossthe grain. Arrange onion rings and steakon 4 slices of bread; spoon any meatjuices from board over onion and steak.Top with tomatoes, arugula and remain-ing 4 slices of bread. Serves 4.

Grilled Peach MelbaTry this easy dessert recipe with other

grilled fruits such as nectarines or apri-cots, then top with frozen yogurt andstrawberry or blackberry sauce.

1/2 pint raspberries1 tablespoon sugar1 1/2 cups vanilla ice cream

1. Prepare outdoor grill for directgrilling on medium.

2. Place peach halves on hot grillgrate and cook 5 to 6 minutes or untillightly charred and tender, turning overonce.

3. Meanwhile, prepare sauce: In bowl,with fork, mash half the raspberries withsugar. Stir in remaining raspberries.

Neckties may be the most popular Father's Day giftin the United States, but wouldn't it be nice to giveDad the gift of a long, healthy life? In honor ofFather's Day, here are some of the most importantfoods for protecting men's health.

Tomatoes: Tomatoes contain a variety of com-pounds that offer protection against prostate cancer -the No. 2 cause of cancer deaths in men, after lungcancer. The powerful antioxidant, lycopene, hasreceived the most media attention. But researchers atthe University of Illinois say that tomatoes' health ben-efits are the result of more than a single compound,proving once again that it's often better to get nutrientsas part of a complex mix in foods, rather than as sin-gle, isolated compounds in pill form. Researchers at

Harvard University found that men who eat at least 10servings a week of tomato-based foods sharply reducetheir risk of prostate cancer. Lycopene is most easilyabsorbed from cooked tomato products, so enjoyample servings of tomato juice, sauce, ketchup andsalsa.

Soy: Soy has heart- and prostate-protecting effects.About 25 grams of soy protein a day can lower cho-lesterol levels by up to 6 percent. Soy also may helpkeep blood vessels more flexible. Mark Messina, asoy expert at Loma Linda University in California,believes in soy's ability to help in the fight againstprostate cancer. Messina explains that in Asian coun-tries, men traditionally eat a diet rich in soy, and theirincidence of prostate cancer is significantly less thanAmerican men.

Tofu isn't the only source of soy. In fact, soy nuts are one ofthe tastiest and easiest ways to get beneficial soy compounds intoyour diet. Soy nuts are available in most grocery stores, and youcan buy them roasted, salted and flavored. Just one-fourth of acup delivers 12 grams of heart-protecting soy protein, as well as avariety of compounds called "isoflavones," which appear to deliv-er prostate protection. Your best bet is to eat soy foods, ratherthan take concentrated supplements.

Nuts: Nuts are high in fat and calories, but they also deliver apowerful dose of prevention against heart disease - the No. 1killer of American men. The naturally occurring fat in nuts ismostly unsaturated. Plus, nuts are rich in fiber, protein, vitamin Eand an assortment of trace minerals such as copper, zinc, magne-sium and selenium.

Orange juice: Orange juice is our No. 1 source of folate, oneof the B vitamins that appears to offer a wide range of protectionagainst heart disease and colon cancer. Reach for a glass of 100percent juice instead of a soft drink.

Dairy: Men with high blood pressure are at greater risk forstroke and heart disease. Weight loss, physical activity and a low-sodium or salt-restricted diet is most commonly prescribed.However, new research shows that diets rich in fruits, vegetablesand low-fat dairy products give additional benefit. Low-fat milkproducts fortified with vitamin D are best because vitamin D alsomay help protect against prostate cancer. Our best sources of vita-min D are sunlight, fatty fish and fortified milk.

Although questions have been raised about dairy products andrisk for prostate cancer, the American Institute for CancerResearch believes that at this point, "We can neither prove nordismiss the possible link between milk and prostate cancer. Moreresearch needs to be done before any changes are made to dietaryrecommendations for dairy products."

Fish: Certain varieties of fish, including salmon, tuna, macker-el and sardines, are rich in "omega-3 fatty acids." This particularkind of fat offers protection against death from heart attack. Therealso is evidence that these fatty acids could help reduce the risk ofprostate cancer. Try to eat two fish meals per week.

Vegetables: Men who eat lots of vegetables, especially thosein the cruciferous family - broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale- have significantly lower rates of prostate cancer. Vegetables andother plant-based foods including whole grains and beans orlegumes also offer protection against heart disease and colon can-cer. Eat a variety of vegetables to ensure the best range of protec-tive components, including powerful antioxidants, vitamins, min-erals and fiber.

Remember, food is just one component of a healthy lifestyle.Physical activity also is key in preventing a wide range of illness-es. Be aware of your family's history of specific diseases, andschedule regular check-ups and health screenings accordingly. Letyour kids catch you setting a good example. Children need theirfathers, so celebrate your health and take care of your body.

Summer is a great time to de-clutter and make a few dollarsat the same time. Holding a yard sale can be work, but it alsocan be lucrative. Here are some tips to make your yard sale suc-cessful.

Posters and signs: Put up notices in grocery stores, thelibrary, senior center - anywhere you can find community bul-letin boards. Be sure what the laws are in your area about post-ing on telephone poles.

Ads: Go in with others on the cost and hold a multi-familysale. The bigger the sale, the more traffic you're likely to get.

Organize: Set aside the items you want to sell. Gather usermanuals, clean your items and make them look as attractive aspossible.

Pricing: Put prices on everything, ideally where the stickereasily can be seen. Put bigger signs on items such as furniture.

Recruit the kids: You might convince them to sell theirunused toys if you allow them to keep the money.

Clothing: Make sure items are washed and dried and hungon hangers. Check the pockets.

Books: Price them cheaply enough and they'll move quickly.Flip through the books to make sure you haven't left anythingbetween the pages.

Cash only: Put up a sign that says you'll only take cash - andstick to it.

Table displays: Have enough tables so that merchandise isup off the ground. Don't make people bend over and pawthrough boxes of stuff under a table, especially clothing andbooks.

Be honest: If the printer doesn't do color photos well but isgreat with black ink, say so on the price sticker.

Making change: Have plenty of bills and coins to makechange. Designate a family member to run the cash box - andnot leave it unattended for a second. Even better: Use a pouchthat belts around your waist.

Most homeowners can identify withthe dilemma of a cracked sidewalk. Inaddition to being a safety hazard, acracked sidewalk can also be an eyesore.Whether strolling to the backyard gardenor walking to your home's entryway, acracked sidewalk can catch your eyes forall the wrong reasons. Fortunately,repairing a cracked sidewalk isn't verydifficult.

•Enlarge the crack. The first thing todo when repairing cracks that are biggerthan a hairline crack is to enlarge thecrack. Use a chisel and hammer toenlarge the crack along its entire length.

•Undercut the crack. When repairing acrack, you want to undercut the crack.Undercutting means you will be makingthe crack wider at the bottom than at thetop. When it's time to lay new concrete,undercutting will help create a strongerbond between the new concrete and theold.

•Remove loose material. Once thecrack has been undercut, remove anyloose material, then brush the cleanedarea with a wire brush to be sure noresidual materials are still there.

•Apply a concrete adhesive. A con-crete adhesive isn't a necessity, but it willhelp the new concrete hold when thetime comes to lay it down. Once theadhesive has been brushed into theundercut area, allow it to dry until it has

a slightly sticky feel.Homeowners who prefer not to use a

concrete adhesive should moisten thearea that needs repairing with water. Justmoisten the area, as you don't want anystanding water on the area that needs tobe repaired with new concrete.

•Apply the concrete as directed. Whenusing a pre-mixed concrete patch, all youwill likely need to add is water. For larg-er cracks, some homeowners prefer tomix their own patch. When mixing yourown patch, you will likely need to addsand and/or gravel. Follow the cementmanufacturer's instructions if mixingyour own patch.

•Tightly tamp the patch into theundercut area. All areas should be com-pletely filled.

•Smooth the repaired area down. Asthe mixture starts to set, use a trowel orwooden float to smooth down therepaired area.

•Allow the repaired area to dry. Givethe repaired area a couple of hours todry. After roughly two hours, cover therepaired area with boards or plasticsheeting.

•Keep the area covered. The repairedarea should be kept covered for roughlyfive days. During this period, wet therepaired area once a day. This allows theconcrete to cure.

The email listed all types of services itprovides to help get benefits after some-one has been turned down. That's not the only scam going on.They're all over the country.

In one scam sent out email that lookedas though it came from Social Security,

offering to send a replacement card orstatement of earnings. What the scam-mers are looking for is your name andSocial Security number to start puttingtogether an identity-theft package.

In areas that have been hit by floodingdisasters, scammers are calling peoplewho had applied for food or services andtold them that a Social Security numberwas needed to complete the file.

In another area of the country, seniorsreceived phone calls saying they hadreceived too much money and had to paysome of it back. A "collector" actuallyshowed up at their door.

If you need to deal with SocialSecurity, call it directly at 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Mondaythrough Friday. Don't use the Internet anddon't respond to email claiming to befrom Social Security.

Poison ivy, oak and sumac are plantsthat contain an oil that may cause a rashon many people's skin. Urushiol, the irri-tant oil in these plants, need only be pres-ent in a billionth of a gram to cause a rash.It is the most common allergy - affectinghalf of the population, according to thePoison Ivy, Oak & Sumac InformationCenter. Here are some other things toknow about these poisonous plants.

•Rashes from poison ivy and the otherplants is not contagious. The only way itspreads is if the urushiol oil is still on thesite.

•Poison ivy may have three leaves percluster, but poison sumac can have 7 to 13leaves on a branch.

•The oil that causes the effects of poi-son ivy can remain on any surface for upto five years, including dead plants.

•The more frequently one is exposed tourushiol oil, the shorter the time an aller-gic reaction will occur.

•Poison ivy and poison oak account foran estimated 10 percent of lost work timeamong U.S. Forest Service workers.

•Poison ivy can grow along the groundbut is often found as a vine creeping uptrees. Poison sumac and oak grow moreoften as bushes.

•Some topical and prescription medica-tions exist to help relieve the uncomfort-able symptoms that result after exposureto a poisonous plant.

The United States purchased Alaskafrom the Russian Empire in 1867 for aprice of $7.2 million. That purchasewould eventually result in a territorialdispute between the U.S. and Canada.

The dispute over who owned what inthe Alaskan territory can be dated back to1821, when both the Russian and Britishempires disputed boundaries. The U.S.and Canada essentially inherited that dis-pute, which, in 1903, was finally settledby an international tribunal made up ofthree American, two Canadian and oneBritish representative.

Lord Alverstone, the lone Englishmanon the tribunal, was of course the swingvote. We all know we should recycle, androutinely place our newspapers, plasticbottles and aluminim cans at the curb forcollection. But there are many other less-er known things that can be recycled.While these things may not be able to beplaced at curbside, they can be droppedoff at recycling centers.

Before an item is relegated to the trashcan, people can do a little research andsee if it can be recycled. Some companiesor organizations pick up certain recy-clables, saving individuals time and gas.

Appliances: Some cities and stateshave appliance recycling or rebate pro-grams. An older, less efficient appliancecan be turned in for a rebate on a newenergy-efficient model. Since 1993, theAssociation of Home ApplianceManufacturers has overseen theAppliance Recycling Information Center.The mission of this center is to serve asthe authoritative source of information onthe environmentally responsible disposaland recycling of appliances and to under-take research into the recycling of majorhousehold appliances. Individuals can usethese resources to determine appliancerecycling initiatives.

Computers: If a computer is in goodworking order, it may be sold or passedon to another person who can put it touse. Some seniors are not interested inRAM or processor speed. They just wanta means of connecting to the Internet andcan benefit from a recycled machine.Otherwise, computers may be donated toless fortunate schools. For those who sim-ply must recycle the machine, there aredifferent drop-off zones for computersand peripherals, like printers. Some good-will organizations will take them and turnthem into profits.

Batteries: These pint-size sources ofpower contain heavy metals that can leakout into the ground and water supplies.

They should be brought to recycling cen-ters to be disposed of properly.Otherwise, consider buying recyclablebatteries and a charger.

Mattresses: Thanks to bed bug epi-demics, fewer people are willing to pur-chase or take on a used mattress. Forthose who are upgrading to a new mat-tress and have an old one to discard,check with the town to find out whichtransfer station will recycle the mattress.Some mattress stores will cart away anold mattress if a new one is purchased.

Scrap metal: Those with scrap metalclogging up garages or basements canactually make some cash off these items.Scrap metal is in demand, and there aredealers who handle the sale and trade ofthese materials.

CDs and DVDs: The number of theseplastic discs in circulation is high. Findout where they can be recycled or turnthem into handy items for other uses. Forexample, use a CD as a reflector on amailbox or at the end of the driveway.

CFL bulbs: The compact fluorescentbulbs save energy but they should berecycled properly, thanks to the minisculeamount of mercury they contain. Somestores, like the furniture store IKEA, willcollect them.

Toner and ink cartridges: Don't dis-card those spent cartridges. Bring themback to office supply stores for recyclingcredit.

Oil: If individuals are changing theirown motor oil, it will need to be taken tothe transfer station or recycling center forproper recycling. Many commercial oilchange businesses will recycle their oil,which makes paying for an oil changeconvenient and environmentally responsi-ble.

People have long had a fascination withall things served on a stick. From kabobs tocorn dogs, a ready-made handle can makeeating on-the-go that much easier. With alittle ingenuity, it's possible to serve cakeon a stick as well, opening up a variety ofunique possibilities for entertaining.

Birthday parties and other special eventsare made even better with the grand finale... a delicious occasion cake. However, slic-ing and serving cake to a large group isoften cumbersome. Being able to servecake on a stick can add whimsy and con-venience to the occasion. If you think itisn't possible, reconsider. There are ways toensure cake can stay safe and sound at theend of a stick.

The key is in making a sticky materialthat can adhere to a standard lollipop stick.Using the desired "cake" material and mix-ing it with a product that will add textureand hold to the cake enables creative bak-ers to mold balls, figures and other designsout of seemingly unmanageable cake.Here's how.

•Using your favorite brand of pre-pur-chased, homemade or cake box cake,crumble the cooled cake into a bowl. Add apackage of cream cheese, Neufchatel

cheese or a container of ready-made frost-ing to bind the cake together.

•Scoop some of the "batter" and roll itinto a desired shape. Set on a pan coveredin waxed paper and allow to chill in therefrigerator for about an hour, until set up.

•In the meantime, select the method ofdecorating the cake ball. Candy melts ormelting chocolates are some of the easiestmethods of decorating because they willfirm and create a protective shell aroundthe dessert. Royal icing may be a toppingof choice because it also hardens over time.

•When the balls or shapes of firmed-upcake are ready, take a lollipop stick and dipit into the topping that will be coating theballs. Push the stick half-way into the cake.Dip the cake on the stick into the coating.

•Decorate further with sprinkles, smallcandies, food coloring based markers, andany other ideas. Stick into a block of styro-foam until the pops dry and harden.

•Easily serve to guests at your nextfunction or package and give away as partyfavors.

For strictly adult events, think aboutadding a dash of rum or liqueur to the cakebatter for an added pop!

Coordinate the party with the local fireworks dis-
