The end of another year is a good opportunity to see how far we’ve come. And it’s been quite a year, both in the Diocese of Lincoln, and in our national life. We’ve had a general election, we’ve had people coming and people going, both nationally and in the diocese. Some projects have been completed, and others have begun.
December may bring us a reminder of how long our New Years’ resolutions have fallen by the wayside, and how much bigger the challenge is for the next year. For me, the big thing is that we’re heading in the direction I envisaged when I came to the diocese four years ago. We have resolved to build the kingdom of God in our part of England, and each year brings its new challenges to fulfil the work we’re called to do.
We live in a broken world, where society strives superficially for perfection. But at this time of year, we celebrate God being among us, born in danger and poverty. It wasn’t the perfect birth for a perfect God. It was a very real human experience, which serves to remind us that despite our imperfections and the challenges we face, we have a Gospel to proclaim.
The celebration of the birth of Christ is the chance to resolve to do the very best we can in the service of God. And while we can never be perfect, we have a perfect example in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
I wish you a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

From the Spilsby “Parish Magazine” 1875
Winter
The autumn leaves whispered, “He’s coming!”
and the dormouse crept slily away,
The grasshopper ended his humming,
the birds ceased to sing on the spray,
the wind blew a trumpet of warning,
the sun in its brightness then fled,
the hoar frost bemantled the morning,
the flowers were all faded and dead.
He drew nearer, and, stealthily creeping,
besprinkled the trees and the ground
With the snow-flakes he’d held in his keeping;
And the rivers and streamlets he bound.
His sceptre was finally planted,
When he asked for December’s hand;
Then the right to his crown was granted
By all those of that frozen land.
But his reign was not without brightness,
In spite of his icy chain;
For he put on a robe of whiteness,
While the sun issued forth again:
He illumined with golden glory
The exquisite works of the King,
And he flung o’er the hills so hoary
The brightness he’d promised to bring.
Then King Winter sat in his splendour
To welcome an honoured guest,
With the beauty his power could render,
The riches his kindom possessed:
So merry Old Christmas came peeping
‘Mid the holly and mistletoe gay,
And every one gave him a greeting,
And wished he could lengthen his stay.
O Life! thou art not all of sadness,
Though dreary thy winter may seem;
For our Father sends music and gladness
To hallow and brighten the scene. Harriett Boultwood

St James’ coffee mornings – Tombola Fundraiser for Guides A huge thank you for your support from 1st Spilsby Guides & Leaders. We raised £140 which helped funds for our camp at Tom Thumb Holt in Spilsby in July
I expect that there is one word which reflects what most people will be searching for at Christmas this year: PEACE. We have been shocked and saddened by the extreme violence which has rocked the world supposedly in the name of religion. But no religion finds its roots in conflict and violence, and the perpetrators of such atrocities have been condemned, even by their own religious leaders. Peace permeates all world faiths: Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian – in all of these there is a desire to live in harmony with one another and with the world. Even in the most unusual and unexpected situations, the Christian faith promotes peace. This month we will hear again the Christmas story, and we will observe the peace that permeates God’s provision for his people: When the birth of Jesus was announced to the shepherds in Bethlehem, it was a shout out that peace had come: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” And at this time of year, we are happy to smile at one another and to wish one another a merry and peaceful Christmas. But I wonder how peaceful Christmas really is for you and the dreaded ‘f’ word: family. Family relationships can cause conflict, turmoil, and stress at any time, but the tensions are often increased during the holidays, when there is no escape from one another, and no delivery on the unreasonable expectations we all have. But if we want peace in the world, we first need to find peace in our hearts and in our homes – because God calls us to share his peace and his love with all.

News from Serekunda, The Gambia
2 years ago through your generosity at various events, we raised £800 for the Infant School at Half Dye, Serekunda. It was slowly sinking due to shallow foundations and heavy monsoons; a new building was desperately needed. I am delighted to be able to tell you that by now the first floor of the new school is completed and builders are moving to the second storey. The foundations are over 6 feet deep and once complete the school will cater for children from aged 4-11. I am told that the quality of the
workmanship is excellent as the workmen know that their children will benefit. We also sent almost 100 colourful jumpers for the young ones. They were delighted – we dressed the whole school as you can see in the photo. Sue West
FAMILY SERVICE
It was hard to believe but for the first time in 14 years there were NO CHILDREN at the Family service on October 4th. What should we do? The theme was Height and we were going to ask the children to measure things in Church; talk about high places they had visited; compare their heights etc. but...what a wonderful congregation! Jane Parker led the service and explained that although there were no children we were the Family of God. Margaret Cook joined Jane for the first talk which would have been especially for the children but she asked everyone to imagine they were 7 years old …...and they did. They answered questions; Val Short and Trevor Howsam compared heights; they joined in with the actions of the hymn ‘Jesus love is very wonderful’; there were jokes and it was a truly family atmosphere. Reverend Joan Thornett talked of her experiences going to
“It’s a big, big sandwich” Can you name the advert?
16
high places in Switzerland and the beautiful moments of seeing breathtaking scenery and thinking of the closeness of God. Jane's prayers encouraged thoughts of the heights and depths in our lives. Many thanks to the congregation for making this Family service a memorable one.
BUT… At the Family Service on November 1st....HURRAH....we had Martha, Elizabeth, Rachael, Toby, Charlie, Jacob and Matthew. The title of the service was Saints Alive as it was All Saints Day. The children drew pictures of themselves and things they were interested in which ranged from archery, tennis, tractors, books, dogs and sheep. Jane Parker and Margaret Cook drew the childrens' attention to the pulpit and talked about the five Saints carved there. There is St Mark with a lion, St Luke with a bullock, St Matthew with an angel and St John with an eagle. In the middle is St James with his staff and hat with the scallop shell to show he was a pilgrim. A number of people in the congregation commented on learning things about the pulpit which they didn't know. Reverend Joan Thornett who led the service then talked about what it is to be a Saint. Although Saints are often thought of as people who did good works hundreds of years ago there are Saints Alive.....people who are faithful, believe in God, listen to his word and try to
follow Him. She talked about St Jude, the Saint for lost causes and St Simon who spoke out and supported national rights. People have many different gifts and all are useful. Jesus reached out to the lost and lonely and calls us all to be Saints Alive. She then did a short quiz for the congregation to guess the names of famous people and what they had achieved in their lives.
Charlie was trainee acolyte with his brother Toby; Martha and Rachael took the collection and Sam and Rupert Parsons did the readings. The next Family service is on December 6th at 10.00am when the theme will be ‘Colour’. Everyone will be made very welcome.

ERESBY NEWS
November is the month for Remembrance and the residents of Eresby Hall will have had opportunities to remember. Some attended the Remembrance service in St James Church; The British Legion laid a wreath in the garden of Remembrance on November 11th and Father Peter dedicated the garden on November 16th.
The flower arrangers group, under the guidance of Pat Bourn, produced unusual poppy flower arrangements and the Art and Craft group decorated the board with poppy paintings and paper wreaths. On Halloween the residents participated in a Halloween quiz and had pie and peas for tea and Jeremy sang for them. Jane Parker and Margaret Cook led a service for All
Saints Day on All Souls Day and the residents sang very well. November 5th was celebrated with a hot dog burger tea and Jenny Webb was very entertaining.
Father Peter will take Christmas Communion on December 21st at 10.45am. There will be more entertainment in December with the Home being decorated by residents and staff on the 1st, Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime on the 3rd and a week of outings including a day at a Chocolate Factory on the 8th, The Orders of St John Care Trust Christmas Party at Navenby on the 9th and shopping trip on the 10th. Eresby Hall is pleased to announce they are holding an Autumn Fayre on Sunday 13th and the Home’s Christmas Party will be taking place on December 20th. The very popular Bingo to raise money for the Home will be held in the Franklin Hall on December 18th. The Manager, staff, residents and volunteers wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas.
