As an organization whose identity is drawn from a God who could not be held in a tomb, it makes perfect sense that Minnesota Council of Churches is known for thinking outside of the box. Whether this means working with the Association of Minnesota Counties to design a Respectful Conversation or being a model to the state for health insurance education, our cross-sector relationships help us to boldly innovate as we build the common good.

In this report you will see that we are on solid financial footing, and that our partnerships with private and public organizations are empowering people like our refugee client Bu Bu to live into the promise of opportunity in Minnesota. You will also hear from a dear friend, Reatha Clark King, on why she supports our work and our mission: to manifest the unity of the body of Christ and build the common good in the world.

With shared hope,

Bu Bu doesn’t remember exactly how he became a refugee at three years of age – he re-members his village in Burma being attacked. There was the sound of gunfire. His mother was away at temple. A neighbor dashed into his home, took him and hid. When the attack was over, his family fled to a refugee camp in Thailand.

After 18 years in the camp he came to Minnesota, where he was greeted at the airport by his brother, his sister, and Minnesota Council of Churches

staff. Shortly afterward he received orientation to life in Minnesota through MCC’s JUMP START program. During three weeks of classes new refugees learn from people from different sectors of industry - bankers teach about opening a bank account and Metro Transit staff teach about riding buses. Soon his MCC job counselor found Bu Bu a position working as an in-home personal care assistant.

A true MCC Refugee Services empowerment story, Bu Bu is also using his skills by working with us to interpret for the very classes he used to take! Bu Bu hopes to find time to complete his studies in business management and he finds value in both of his jobs, saying “I know this work is important, too.”

It was during the interfaith 9/11 Memorial from the Heartland that, as a member of Governor Jesse Ventura’s advisory committee, Reatha Clark King first heard of the Minnesota Council of Churches. “It is great to have an organization with the capacity and know-how to be able to bring Jews, Muslims and Christians together as well as people from other sectors,” she says. “I very much like the statewide capacity and influence of MCC.”

Through active involvement she learned better what MCC does and increased her gifts as she learned more about the programs. Reatha believes that “when you have a creative instigator along with staff, you should feel ready to put resources and money forward to test your ideas.”

Reatha can’t name one favorite MCC program. She loves feeling motivated by the stories of refugees, she believes Graceful Journey’s focus on dying and faith is important, and she appreciates that Respectful Conversations are building bridges where people can grow together.

In the end, Reatha donates because she likes hearing about programs and initiatives that are “unique and creative.” Ultimately, her decision to support MCC is rooted in her commitment to “helping communities be better and improve the quality of life for ALL people.”
