J ’ve had a hard time keeping up with all the expansion that the Mills 50 area has been experiencing over the last couple of years, with new restaurant concepts popping up at a

fevered pace. One of the more recent additions is Firebirds Wood Fired Grill. Located in Winter Park on N. Mills Avenue in the Fresh Market shopping center, Firebirds presents bold classical American cuisine in an upscale setting.

The restaurant is separated into three distinct areas. The patio is a popular spot with its open design that lets you soak up the beautiful weather this time of year. When it’s nice out, it’s a great

patio for an after-work happy hour and the interior bar and cocktail area is the go-to spot for client meetings and small groups. The dining area is reminiscent of a cozy ski lodge, featuring a mixture of stone and wood, very tall ceilings, and a large fireplace in the center. signature fire imparts flavors you won’t find in an oven or sauté pan.

You can’t go wrong starting off your meal with the lobster spinach queso or the chicken tortilla soup. The queso dip had a generous portion of lobster which helps justify its price, and the tortilla soup was some of the best I’ve ever had. Lunch entrees that we tried included the Durango Burger, Steak Au Poivre, and the Firebirds Chicken Pasta. The Durango Burger was easily my favorite, despite its towering size. The Steak Au Poivre was cooked well, and the peppercorn brandy sauce went well with the Parmesan mashed potatoes. The signature chicken pasta featured a creamy and spicy Asiago cream sauce with smoked bacon and green onions and tomatoes.

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill serves up great food and great atmosphere. Combine that with their well-trained staff and weekly specials and what you have is a fantastic spot for any occasion!u
