Yes, you are reading a road teston Toyota’s newly launched up-dated Hilux-bakkie, aptly namedthe Legend 45.
To the untrained eye, this latestincarnation looks pretty much thesame as the outgoing model, butsomehow Toyota has worked mira-cles by adding a few subtle stylingtweaks.If memory serves me correctly,
this is South Africa’s third offeringof the Legend variant. Back in 2004Toyota introduced the Legend 35bakkie to themarket.Thesamereci-pe which was successful then, iscontinued today. Some chrome, big-ger wheels and a refreshed interiorare all you need to sway potentialbuyers and keep the regular Hiluxclientele.Somehow, even that 10-year-old
Hilux Legend 35 is still rather good-looking today.Theyaresoughtafterand widely respected as properhigh-mileage 4x4 vehicles.ThenewLegend 45 still has an im-
posing stance and a loyal followingmostothermanufacturescouldonlydream of. Underneath the new exte-rior upgrades, the underpinningsare mostly unchanged since its in-ception in 2005.Don’t think that thisis in any way a bad thing.The popular old English saying
goes: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”That is exactly what Toyota hasdone and their enormous sales fig-uresareatestamenttothisdecision.An updated exterior for the Leg-
end 45 features blacked-out head-lamps, front fog lamps, smoked taillights and a stainless steel frontnudgebar.At the rearyounowhavea convenient rear step bumperwhile purposeful multi-spoke 17-inch wheels finish off the look. Atowbar is also fitted for your conve-
niencewhileLegend 45 badging andblack side steps complete the list.The engine line-up too, is un-
changed. You can choose betweenthree different engines and bodytypes. There are twopetrol poweredbakkies, namely the 2.7 VVTi 4-cyl-inder, which is rated at118 kW/241 Nm. The powerful 4.0 FV6 is still in the mix and offers buy-ersauniquebalancebetweenpowerand driveability. Power for the V6is rated at an impressive175 kW/376 Nm. The diesel engineswill probably sell the best andToyo-ta now offers two different models.The first being their ever-popularand very tough 3.0D4D turbo diesel,
which still churns out a healthy120 kW/343 Nm. Relatively new tothe Hilux line-up is a 2.5 4-cylinderwhich produces 106 kW/343 Nm.The Legend 45 I picked up for a
leisurely weekend cruise, was the3.0 F turbodiesel (pricedatR452 200)paired with an automatic gearbox.I must admit, I was apprehensiveabout driving a 4-speed automaticgearbox, but aftermore than 500 kmbehind the wheel, I was rather sur-prised by the experience.Being lucky enough to live on a
farm, I thought there will be no bet-ter place to test the Hilux’s overallability.Althoughmytestvehicleon-ly featured a rear diff-lock, I could
still easily conquer any rutted grav-el roads.A particular bad stretch of gravel
is called theSlentRoad in thePerde-berg area. The road stretches over10 kmandgets hammeredby truckson a daily basis. I’ve travelled onthis road with many vehicles in thepast, and I am happy to report thatthe Hilux did not disappoint. Evenwithout 4X4 aid, the bakkie still feltsafe and solid – the main character-istic that all passengers agreed on.Executing thesimpledoor-close testrevealed that a reassuring thudwasfelt.Cruising at legal highway speeds,
the cabinwas quiet with acceptable
wind and road noise levels. The4-speed automatic gearbox is de-signedwith longer gearing inmind.At a 120 km/h, the engine was tick-ing over at just over 2 000 rpm. Ad-mittedly the upshifts are smootherthan the downshifts, but in general,I could live without the extra cog.This statementmustbe compared
to the fact that most othermanufac-turers in the bakkie segment haveopted for six or more gears in theirrespective automatic gearboxes. Ican only assume that Toyota hasstuck with four gears because of re-liability and simplicity.My fuel consumptionwas slightly
hampered by my selective gearboxas I achieved between 8-10 km/F.The interior is nicely updated too.Toyota has heard the buying publicand the Legend 45 is now availablewith a much more pleasant, blackinterior. The seats are comfortablewhile the rear legroom is sufficient.I do enjoy the multimedia touch-screen interfaceandthesystemcon-nects to your mobile phone in lessthan a minute. The audio quality isacceptable while the reverse cam-era is a nice touch, but I would haveliked to have rear park assist too.With major players such as the
Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Ama-rok sharing a sizeable chunk of theSA bakkie market, Toyota has donejust about enough to keep on keep-ing on. The Legend 45 is the rightblend of fresh facelifted materials,matched to a tried and trusted en-gine. Let’s all wait and see what the2015 Hilux will have in store.Pricing for the Legend 45 starts at

The H6 measures4 640 mm in length andridesona2680 mmwheel-base. These generous di-mensions endow the H6with a very spacious cab-in, as well as a very largeluggage area. “The H6’skey dimensions actuallyallow it to offer rear leg-roomandboot space simi-lar tovehicles thataresig-nificantly bigger (andmore expensive) than its perceived rivals,”explains Oosthuizen. “We urge customers todo the ‘sit-behind-yourself’ test with the H6to experience its spaciousness for them-selves.”
Comfort levels are further boosted by a gen-erous standard specification package. “Valueis not only about offering a low price,” ex-plains Oosthuizen. “The H6 City’s cabin ispacked with so many comfort and safety fea-turesthatitwouldstillappealevenatasignifi-cantly higher cost.” As is the case with all H6derivatives, the steering wheel offers gener-ous rake and reach adjustability, the gearlev-er sprouts from the facia, so it falls easily tohand, and there are fold-down armrests forboth front occupants. Climate control keepstheveryspaciouscabincooland theradio/CDsystem boasts USB and auxiliary input sup-port, ensuring on-going entertainment onthose long family trips.
It goes without saying that power-assistedsteering, power windows all-round and elec-tric mirror adjustment are all standard, but
the fitment of rear park sensors will come asa surprise at this price level. Dual front air-bags, ABSwithEBDand rear Isofix child seatmountings arepart of a comprehensive safetypackage.
The H6 City is powered by the company’srecently introduced GW4G15B powerplantthat is perfectly aligned with the currenttrend of engine downsizing. The engine deliv-ers the performance of a larger, naturally as-pirated engine, but without the accompany-ing fuel consumption penalty – it develops105 kWat5600 rpmand210 Nmof torque from2200 to 4 500 rpm.Matedwitha slick six-speedmanual transmission, the engine boasts aclaimedcombinedcycle fuel consumption fig-ure of only 8,5 F/100 km.
