Boiler blowdownsystems

As steam forms it leaves behindimpurities and dissolved solids inthe boiler water that will concentrateunless blown down. The TDS(total dissolved solids) in the boilermust be controlled accurately.High TDS will result in carryoverof boiler water and impuritiescausing problems with productionand plant. Low TDS due to toomuch blowdown will be expensivein fuel costs and water treatmentchemical losses.Systems are available for largeand small, vertical and horizontalshell boilers and water tube andcoil boilers.

Level controlsand alarms

Significant developments havetaken place in recent yearsimproving considerably thestandards of safety and reliabilityof boiler level controls. Probeswithout moving parts and modernelectronic controllers are soreliable that major boiler accidentsshould be a thing of the past.The range offered has beenapproved by a number of leadingEuropean and other Authorities.

FeedtanksThe feedtank is often the sourceof high heat losses and on-goingmaintenance. The Spirax Sarcofeedtank is an atmosphericdeaerator, fitted with a flashcondensing deaerator head. Thisbrings together the cold make-up,condensate return and flashrecovery. Flash steam iscondensed whilst heating anddeaerating the cold make-up. Thedeaerator head is also availablefor fitting into existing feedtanks.

Feedpumpcheck valves

Fitted with heavier springs and softseats to give a tight shut-off and

prevent a shut-down boiler fromflooding with feedwater.

Steam injectionsystems

Used to inject live steaminto feedtanks to drive off the

dissolved oxygen, considerablyreducing the amount of oxygen

scavenging chemicals required,and to maintain a high and

steady feedwater temperatureto the boiler.

Conductivity meterThe temperature compensatedconductivity meter is an essentialinstrument to have in the boilerhouse for checking boiler waterand feedwater TDS levels andcalibrating control instrumentation.It is also used to check theconditions of an installedTDS probe.

Sample coolersTo be sure that a boiler isoperating at the desiredconcentration of TDS it isnecessary to take a sample ofthe water and test it. The stainlesssteel sample cooler lets theoperator do this safely andaccurately without the risk ofsteam flashing off. A version isavailable with a 'hygienic' typecoupling.

Heat recovery systemsFlash steam recovery fromblowdown has two advantages.In addition to the heat recoveredthe flash steam is condensed to'pure' water, reducing the amountof make-up water and chemicaltreatment required. For certainconditions it may be moreeconomical to pass the blowdowndirectly to a flash vessel withoutusing a heat exchanger.Spirax Sarco can provide a rangeof alternative solutions to heatrecovery.

Blowdown vesselsBlowdown vessels are designedin accordance with the UK Healthand Safety Executive GuidanceNote PM60.They are constructed andinspected to:PD 5500:2000 CAT 2 or CAT 3,and supplied with a Data Dossierand Insurance Company Form X.

Vent headsThe vent head separates outcondensate and vents flash steamsafely without spray. Vent headbodies are stainless steel to fitand forget.

Bottomblowdown valves

Systems to ensure precise andregular blowdown of precipitatedsolids from the bottom of the boiler.Both key operated manual systemsand fully automated systems areavailable.

Condensate contaminationdetection systemsEven low levels of contamination can causefoaming, scaling and corrosion in the boiler.The contamination detection system monitorsthe conductivity of the condensate and willraise an alarm and divert it to drain if apre-set limit is passed.

StrainersRange: DN15 to DN250; bronze,

cast iron, cast steel, stainless steel;pressures up to 64 bar; flanged

and screwed connections.

SeparatorsSeparators remove moisture fromsteam pipelines. They provide adrain point for condensate dropletsmoving along the pipe wall anddeflect entrained droplets out ofthe main flow. Separators thereforeensure that steam is delivered toits point of use dry - particularlyimportant with highly rated plantor equipment like sterilizers,where steam comes into contactwith the product.Range: DN15 to DN250;up to 25 bar; cast iron, SG iron,carbon steel and stainless steel.

Air ventsand vacuum breakers

For use on steamand water systems.

Range: DN10 to DN40; brass,carbon steel and stainless steel.
