◦⊱BOHEME ROYALE: So Lauren, tell us about yourself and about Black Salt™?

◦⊱LAUREN: I was born and raised in Orange County, California. I went to college at the

University of Colorado at Boulder, and I’ve been traveling around Europe basically since I

graduated from college. When I got back from Europe, I had a “now what” moment, and

that’s when we started playing around with the idea of Black Salt. I’ve always loved art and

fashion, and Black Salt seemed like a perfect way to combine the two.

Black Salt is a collaborative label that puts the artist first. We find artists we love, collaborate

with them on graphics for our pieces, and create wearable art for our customers. What makes

us different is that we celebrate our artists; we put a face and name to each tee or tank that we

create. We think the people behind the graphics need to be recognized and appreciated for

their talent. In doing so, we’re building a fun, creative family that will help one another

continue to grow and innovate over time.

◦⊱BR: The name is so unique, does it have any connection with the black salt used in rituals

to banish negative energies and jinxes?

◦⊱LS: I wish I could say that we were inspired by something specific that brought about the

name, but honestly, we just threw around different brand names we liked for awhile until

Black Salt ultimately stuck with us.

◦⊱BR: What was your inspiration behind the brand, and what continues to be an inspiration to

this day?

◦⊱LS: I’ve always had a major appreciation for art and wondered about the artists behind

some of my favorite graphic tees, so I thought it’d be fun to put together a brand that

celebrates artistic talent. I love that our artists are recognized and part of our team, so they’re

the people that continue to inspire me. There are so many insanely talented people all over the

world, and I think it’s fun to give them another platform to show off their work.

◦⊱BR: Black Salt™ as a brand isn't very old, but already you're collaboratively dishing out so

many cool designs, do things ever get almost too hectic?

◦⊱LS: We just officially launched a little over a month ago, so things have definitely been

pretty hectic. I have a great team though, and we thrive when things are chaotic. We’ve gotten

great feedback so far, so it makes the chaos tons of fun!

◦⊱BR: Your first collection and lookbook, "Fate & Fortune" debuted not too long ago. What

Page 9: BOHEME ROYALE MAGAZINE: MARCH 2015

◦⊱BR: Your first collection and lookbook, "Fate & Fortune" debuted not too long ago.

What was the process behind that and storyline?

◦⊱LS: We’re really into the boho trend right now, but we wanted to throw our own twist on

it by making everything black and white. There are so many beautiful, vibrant pieces out

there right now, so there’s always room for a black and white piece to layer with those

louder statement pieces. Plus, we’re definitely into the effortless, jeans and tee look; and we

think our tees and tanks make for an easy, put-together look.

◦⊱BR: What's it like to work with amazing artist like Betty, Brianne and Honey, and being

able to share their work via wearable canvases?

◦⊱LS: Working with the artists is everything. They are all so unbelievably talented and

sweet; we could not have launched with a better group of artists. They’re really the

foundation of everything we’re doing.

◦⊱BR: If you could work with any designer, model or photographer out there, who would it

be and why?

◦⊱LS: We are inspired by so many people; it’s hard to pick one person! We love Nate

Brown and Virgil Abloh as overall creatives. Although our aesthetic is different than what

they typically work with, we think they could do some insane things with Black Salt.

They’re so innovative it’s inspiring.

◦⊱BR: Where do you see yourself and Black Salt™ in 5 years? What do you hope to have

established by then?

◦⊱LS: I see Black Salt as more of a club of creatives in five years. Right now, we’re really

trying to get a lot of people involved whether it’s bloggers, models, artists, photographers,

etc. We want it to be a collaborative label, where a group of creative people can feed off of

one another and design awesome clothing. It’s so much fun when a lot of people can feel as

though the brand is their own because they have truly contributed. I’m hopeful that by then

we will have expanded into a head-to-toe brand, making outerwear, jeans, etc.

◦⊱BR: Outside of being a busy business woman, what are some things you like to do to

unwind and relax?

Page 10: BOHEME ROYALE MAGAZINE: MARCH 2015

◦⊱LS: I’m honestly a big homebody. I love to be home with my dogs, in sweats, with a

topknot. To me, that’s the ultimate way to unwind. I also love brunching with my friends;

they’re always the biggest breath of fresh air when I need it. Working out never hurts,

either!

◦⊱BR: And last but not least, do you have any advice for someone wanting to start their

own brand?

◦⊱LS: I think the best advice is to just DO it. Stop trying to plan for things that haven’t

happened yet, stop letting other people belittle what you’re trying to do, stop worrying

about what others will think, stop waiting for the “perfect time,” and DO what you want to

do. It’s the hardest step to take. Everything else you can deal with as it comes. You’ll

learn as you go, and make necessary tweaks and changes for improvement along the way,

but you’ll never get anywhere if you don’t start. Also, work your ass off. No one can ever

knock hard work, and it goes a long way. If you work harder than everyone else, you will

find a way to be successful.

The Mustang, a nationally recognized symbol of freedom, endurance and strength in

the United States, even the government has said so themselves that these beautiful

animals embody the American Spirit and pioneering spirit.

So why are they rounding these animals up? Using fear tactics like dart guns, close-

range helicopters, and nets. All for the greed of man and money. Many horses die in these roundups, running into the fences of their crowded and small holding pens, and

90% of these horses will never see their homes again. How would YOU like it if

someone came in the middle of the night, with bright lights, and herded you from your home by means of a helicopter just a few feet above your head to an unknown

location?

These wild horses and burros have been here long before any modern day man, yet

we think it’s fair to remove them from their homes. We are destroying the lives of

these creatures.

But will you help stop it? Will you be a voice for the voiceless? Will you protect

them from the roundups, sign the petitions to keep them from slaughter houses, will you rally to KEEP THEM WILD?

Donate today, any amount, and sign up with the American Wild Horse Preservation

Campaign to keep up to date with the latest news and how you can help.
