    Essential Oil Quality

    Genuine aromatherapeutic essential oils

For therapeutic purposes the quality and wholeness of any essential oils used are ofparamount importance, irrespective of cost, whereas when used in the flavour and fragranceindustries the price, taste and aroma are the most important considerations; for themstandardized essential oils are necessary to ensure repeatability and a consistent quality.

Quality variation Variation in the quality of an essential oil may be natural or due to human intervention. Wine ia comemodity which is epected to have a different taste and character from year to year, although harvested, processed and bottled at the same vineyard and from the same vines. !lantare sub"ect to varing amounts of sunshine, frost, rain, heat or cold each year, and it is thesefactors, plus the comeposition of the soil, which are responsible for the variations in quality and

comeposition #and therefore the aroma$ of the plant etracts, occurring naturally from year toyear.

Synthetic materials, adulteration %raders in essential oils may add cheaper oils or synthetics to the genuine oils, in order tomaintain the same standard taste, aroma, and price level for successive repeat deliveries to thesame customer. %he need of the flavour and food industries are today so great that there arescarely enough natural products in the world to meet the demand, and even where availablesome products are "ust too epensive for their purposes comepared with synthetics. %hearomatherapist, however, needs above all to acquire the natural physicochemical characteristics, whatever the variation from harvest to harvest.

&ssential oils are made up of a vast array of natural chemicals, most of which are found inmore than one oil. 't is a fairly simple matter for the chemist to remove a desired constituent froma cheap oil and add it to an epensive oil, or to sell a modified (pure( oil to an unsuspectingcustomer for a high price. )dulteration also ta*es place when a synthetic isolated is added, especially to one of the costly oils such as rose otto, when synthetic phenyl ethyl alcohol#occurring naturally in rose otto$ is used as the adulterant. +atural identical products aremanufactured in a laboratory and are simply synthetic copies of ingredients found in nature.

)lcohol, and occasionally a small amount of vegetable oil, which are both good solvents ofessential oils, are used to adulterate, stretch or cut +ature(s gifts, and many descriptive words areused to "ustify the standardization sometimes necessary in the fragrance and food industries.(ertain suppliers with highly developed imagination will even use the term -ennobling for the

disfiguration of an essential oil( #)rctendar /012$. With some oils it is almost standard practice toadulterate, e.g. the use of !&3 #polethylene glycol$ to etend lavender essential oil.

Imitations &pensive essential oils such as Melissa officinalis 4melissa5 andAloysia triphylla 46emonverbena5 are often imitated by the perfume industry by using blends of cheaper oils to stimulatethe aroma; to the perfumer, the aroma is the most important asset of an (essential oil(, not whethe

it is natural, adulterated or synthetic. %isserand and 7ales #/008 p /99$ say thatAloysia triphyllashould not be used in therapy, but this advised is based on test carried out at /: usingfragrance quality oils #owever, the genuine oil, which has a similary concentrationof citral to the above oils does not irritate the s*in #?chnaubelt /00@ p. //9$ A a good reason fornot using industrial quality essential oils therapeuticallyB

Deterpenized Oils &ssential oils used in fragrance industry often have their terpenes partly or wholly removed onaccount of their insolubility in alcohol, which would result in cloudiness A a distinct comemercialand asthetic disadvantage in a perfumeB %he deterpenized oil is incomeplete and contains inhigher proportions the remaining consituents of the oil, for eample the deterpenization ofpeppermint increases the content of the possibly hazardous *etone menthone. 'n aromatherapythere is no necessity for this and it is imperative not to interfere with the natural balance of theessential oil. ?ome therapist purchase bergaptenCfree bergamot oil, as this constituent #afuranocourmarin$ can be responsible for phototoicity of the s*in in sunlight, but this isunnecessary.

Contaminants %he ma"ority of essential oils are produced for use by the food and fragrance industries which, generally spea*ing, are not concerned whether or not fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides may bepresent in the oil. ?tewart #:22D p. /2$ says that herbicides, fungicides and pesticides areintrinsically toic and inevitably end up as contaminants in the oils, directly affecting their efficayand safety. comemerial grade oils can present toic effects as a result of adulteration, folding, strechtingetc. to which they are sub"ected in order to haveE

. ) standardized product which can be repeated at any time, which is impossible with

naturally grown plantsE . ) product at a price comepatible with their mar*eting strategy #often meaning cheap$.

For therapeutic use aromaterapists use only distilled essential oils and epressed essences, although some occasionallly ma*e eception to the rule by using "asmine absolute or benzoin.

    Purchasing Genuine ! "uthentic Oils

. Genuine, meaning that nothing is added to the essential oil and that it is pure, natural and

    comeplete.

. Pure, hich specifies that no other essential oils or vegetable oils are present in the product.

+n oil diluted ith vegetable oil, like grapeseed or canola, is generally easy to detect by its te"ture

and its inability to evaporate. 6ften times, more e"pensive oils are stretched, or adulterated, usingother oils. or e"ample bergamot )citrus bergamia* may be stretched using lemon )citrus limon),

    11/21

and lavender )Lavandula angustifolia* may be stretched ith lavandin )Lavandula x intermadia).

his type of stretching is much harder for the ine"perience aromatherapist to detect.

. Natural, hich means that no synthetic ingredients are added to the essential oil. #erfume oils,

even soHcalled natural perfume oils, may be diluted ith petrochemicals like mineral oils,

propylene glycol, phthalates or other synthetics. his should be easy enough to detect, but again,

e"perience is important in the detection process.

. comeplete, indicating that the oil has not been decolori9ed or deterpeni9ed. he flavor and

fragrance industry re=uires certain molecules )terpenes* and color to be e"tracted from natural oils.

his practice, not used in aromatherapy, may cause the oils to have less activity or to becomee

    irritants.

. Authenticdescribes the source of the oil. +n essential oil used in aromatherapy should be

clearly defined as coming from one plant of an identified botanical source. he distillation should

be from one specific plant and not a mi" of similar plants or plants that gro alongside the chosen

    path.

inally, hen purchasing essential oils, you should kno theirspecific botanical origin. hiscriterion tells you hich plant the oil is e"tracted from and is generally identified by genus and the

species of the plant. +n oil labeled BchamomileC could be fromMatricaria recutita, Anthemis

nobilis, or Ormensis multicolis. !ach of these plants produces oils that have distinctly differentproperties. You ill avoid confusion by knoing the correct botanical designation of the essential

    oil.
