What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

As defin

ed, PTSD is sever e anxi et y that can devel op af ter

exposure to one or more events that causes psychological

trauma. (Cumulative Career Traumatic Stress, or CCTS, is

similar to PTSD in its symptoms except its cause is from a

series of traumatic events over a prolonged time, such as the

career of an office

r . When referring to PTSD in this booklet, we

imply CCTS as well.) It is an extreme, but natural, reaction to a

traumatic event. It often occurs from an intense situation when

you think you or somebody else is going to die or be seriously

injured and that you can do nothing to prevent it. It affects

approximately 25 percent of those exposed to a single traumatic

incident, but, when dealing with CCTS, can be near 90 percent

for those repeatedly exposed.

PTSD is an injury, not a weakness.

PTSD is an injury to the brain’s normal processing ability to

properly process emotional trauma and place it into proper

perspective. It can occur weeks or even years afterwards and

can affect anyone. Delayed PTSD symptoms occur at least six

months after the event, or even later. Approximately 40 percent

of diagnoses fall into this category.

It is estimated that over 7 million Americans suffer from post

traumatic stress disorder. About 15-18 percent of working police

offic

e

r s (about 140, 000) have PTSD and CCTS symp t oms .

Many tens of thousands more suffer from Acute Stress Disorder.

The rate of PTSD in police work is three to four times that of the

general population.
