THE CITY
Photo: Harvey Barrison
The name Bodrum has changed many times over the years. The city
was initially called Halikarnassos by thesatrap Mausollos. After
his death in 352 BC he wasburied in the mausoleum, which is one of
the sevenwonders of the ancient world.
Halikarnassos eventually became Petronion, which then became
Bodrum in Turkish. In the 1920's, Bodrum was soremote that it was
used as a place of exile. Perhaps this iswhy the city attracted
artists and bohemians, and in the1970s, Bodrum developed into
"Turkeys St. Tropez," witha busy entertainment and night life.
Numerous Turkishcelebrities live in the holiday apartments in and
around thecity.
The city centre is small and easy to navigate, and most things
are within walking distance. The citys main streetruns parallel
with the water and the sea is never far awayin Bodrum.
Even though Bodrum has developed into a jet-set favourite, its
easy for the ordinary tourist to nd thepopular places in the city
or the surrounding villages. Inthe shipyard, the traditional tirade
and gulet boats are stillbuilt, and these can be hired for short or
long trips alongthe beautiful coastline.

SHOPPING

Cumhuriyet Cad is the name of the shopping street in Bodrum and
the bazaar is full of clothes, souvenirs andgenuine fake watches.
Most branded goods might be fakebut the quality is still good.
Bodrum is a good place for those wanting to buy carpets, leather
goods or gold. Mehmet engel is a well-known andreliable carpet
dealer who sells both wholesale and retailand has a good, high
quality range of products (next toGurup Oteli in the harbour).
Diamonds is the name of two exciting shops selling both genuine
and copies of Ottoman jewellery from the lastcentury, old models of
wristwatches and antiques. If youcant aord to buy, its still a joy
to look at the wonderfulthings on oer (Cumhuriyet Cad. 43 and Kale
Cad. 35).
At the Friday market (next to the bus station) you can nd
everything from live sheep to olive oil, loukma (a sweet),honey and
adaay. On Tuesdays, there is a clothes marketin the same place. The
visitor will also nd handicraftssuch as copper work, beautiful
tiles and ceramics. Alongthe Turkish coast there are several
famous
carpetweaving districts. In Milas, they make brick-redprayer
mats with broad borders.
Advice: Bargaining is a must when buying carpets.
