c“Philosophy and the best literature impel a cultured
taste more and more towards simplicity and restriction to essentials and towards a preference over all others for the beauty which has no borrowed plumes… the
type is the one thing which is inevitably necessary, and to it all else is subserviant”.
Giambattista Bodoni is a famous Italian typographer.
Bodoni left home at the age of 18 to do a printing apprenticeship, after learning the trade well he was offered the position of Director of the Stamperia Reale, the Royal press for the Duke of Parma, in which he stayed for the rest of his career. Bodoni became a typographer, en–graver, printer and publisher.
First Bodoni was known for creaing decorative typefaces in the French style of Fournier le jeune. He however, changed his style to his well known simplistic and modern face. Bodoni was even known to mix his own inks.
It goes without saying by looking at his work he was a perfectionist.
Bodoni has created a contrast between thick and thin strokes in his types however Bodoni has been criticized for creating type that tends to “dazzle” users because of this fact. Despite this Bodoni still “deservedly gained worldwide acceptance among printers.”
Giambattiista Bodoni was apparently inspired by John Baskerville whom he met at 28 years old, John designed the type face Baskerville.
Bodoni was the fourth son of a master printer. So some would say he was born into pursuing this type of career.
• Unbracketed hairline serifs• Hairline horizontal strokes• Contrasted dramatically by thick stems• Types lack the rhythmic, calligraphic
flow• Punch cutting for fine serifs• Requires enormous skill for cutting,
striking matrices and casting metal type
“The letters don’t get their true delight, when done in haste & discomfort, nor merely done
with diligence & pain, but first when they are created with
love and passion.”
Unflagged by his famous rivalry with Didot, in his life Bodoni designed and personally engraved 298 typefaces, and the various printing houses he managed produced roughly 1,200 fine editions.
After his death at Parma, 1813, his widow published Il Manuale tipografico (The Manual of Typography), presenting 373 characters, 34 Greek and 48 Oriental or exotic ones.
William Morris considered Bodoni’s mechanical perfection in typography the ultimate example of modern ugliness. On his chest, when examining his dead body they found the deep scar left by the bar of the printing press.
Bondoni’s type is used in various ways regarding advertisements, magazine publishing, newspaper publishing, merchandised and fashion related goods, logos, album covers, hotel menus and manuscripts.
Well-known brands who have used Bodoni include; Vogue magazines, Hilton Hotels (for their menu’s), Mamma Mia (movie posters), Narvana (album covers), Lady Gaga (logo and album) covers, Elizabeth Arden, Clavin Klien (logo), Armani Exchange (logo), Tom Clancy’s (novel book covers).

Tall apple shape
Tall but bold? BODONI bold is a perfect match.
“I bet you get all the compliments don’t
you? With your slim frame and medium height, you are most women’s idea of the
perfect figure. But we know that you struggle with
creating curves.”
Medium-height slender shape
BODONI’S Roman slender face enhances the slim, tall and sleekshape everyone is after!
“Hello fresh and fruity lady! You
have a super-feminine, rounded apple shape and have a typical body shape for many
British women. On the tall side, you have the advantage of height to stretch out your body so you should invest in wide, curved belts to cinch in your waist. Avoid skinny straps
and fussy decorative detail, as this will make your body
look bigger.”
“Oh you gorgeous
big hipped Botticelli
Venus.
Don’t hide your beautiful bottom away
accentuate it! Your trick is to slim your
hips with A-line skirts and loose trousers and broaden
your slender shoulders to balance out your
frame.”
