Results of the Descanso Show will be in the next newsletter. Congratulations to all the winners. It is now time to think of planting and preparing for next year's shows, and the National Convention to be held in our region. We hope to have the pleasure of your company there. With our heavy rainfall during the last growing season, the bulbs should be in good condition, and ready to bloom forth with quality blooms. While we have no control over weather conditions, in this area we are usually blessed with dry summers so that the bulbs can cure in the ground without being lifted. This year, however, was an exception, with many areas in our usually dry belt receiv- ing several inches of rain during our normally dry summer. Several members have written to say that they have found some basal rot. This points up the need for good drainage, as well as a fungicide dip or dusting of bulbs before planting. While this is no guarantee of eliminating basal rot, it is certainly a deterrent. Some of our members have asked for advice on daffodil culture. Here is a short "rule of thumb". Remember, in planting, low nitrogen fertilizers with trace elements, dug in well below the depth of the bulb, deep watering to encourage root growth, and when the plants push through the ground, copious amounts of water produce the best size and color flowers. Don't forget, the following year's blooms depend on the care the plants get after the current year's bloom is produced. Post bloom watering is important until the foliage starts to brown, or go limp, then withhold water completely. A two or three inch mulch will help keep the soil cool during the hot summer. Good luck and good growing. Hope to see you at one or more of our shows next spring. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Southern California Rarly Daffodil Show Corona del Mar, Calif. This year's show was highlighted by the entries of several top West Coast hybridizers. Sid DuBose won the Green Ribbon using twylve of his seedlings, and also won the best seedling with a smooth 2 W-P. Bill Roese brought several excellent seedlings, most notably three stately yellow trumpets with broad, smooth perianth. Harold Koopowitz sent a trio of his creations to win the prestigious Hybridizer Trophy. Of some interest, the pink collection was won with five Y-Ps. It might also be mentioned that the champion bloom of Dailmanach was one of the most impressive blooms we have ever seen at our shows; good color, very large, faultless perianth and excellent grooming.
