NEW FORMULA’S IN STOCK AT OUR RT 53 SHOWROOM

Marine Tech Concepts announces the addition of FORMULA boats to their dealership

Marine Tech Concepts (MTC) has two locations to serve you: 145 SE Catawba Rd., Port Clinton, Ohio and 7130 E Harbor Rd., Marblehead, Ohio.

Formula boats have been building pleasure boats in Indiana for over 55 years and are now pleased to announce MTC as their new dealer for the Port Clinton area. MTC has been an autho-rized service center for Formula boats and adding this product to their stores will be a huge advantage for the boaters of the Lake Erie Islands area. MTC is currently stocking Formula boats in their Port Clinton showroom and they invite you to stop by and check them out. MTC will also be at the Cleveland Boat Show at booth number 745.

Formula’s mainstream product are pleasure boats up to 45’,

both cruiser style and day boats including bow riders from 24’ to 35’. High performance is strong with Formula, offering engine packages from Mercury Racing and Ilmore. MTC is pre-pared, trained and certified in Mercury Racing and ready for the discerning boater looking for that extra punch!

Mercury Racing offers engine packages from 520 HP to 1650 HP and at the Cleveland Boat Show this year, MTC will have the NEW Mercury Racing 520. Mercury Racing is proud to introduce the 520, the latest addition to its high performance sterndrive family. The naturally inspired engine provides recreational boaters a cost effective power option that fits nicely in both value and performance between the Mercruiser 8.2 MAG HO and the 525 EFi. The low cost sterndrive will feature digital throttle

and shift and is backed by an unprecedented two year limited factory warranty.

MTC specializes in the performance market for existing boat product lines for horsepower upgrades, engine refresh programs, scheduled maintenance plans, drive repairs and rig-ging modifications. For the stock applications, MTC can give the same professional service for Mercruiser sterndrives, Mercury Outboard Verado, Mercruiser Bluewater Inboards, Crusader and Yamaha Outboards.

Marine Tech Concepts and Formula can now deliver that spe-cial Formula tailored to the desire of the buyer.

Boaters enjoy the feel of sun and spray. So it’s tempting to boat without wearing a life jacket – especially on nice days. But mod-ern life jackets are available in a wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Many are thin and flexible. Some are built right into fishing vests or hunter coats. Others are inflatable — as compact as a scarf or fanny pack until they hit water, when they auto-matically fill with air.

There’s no excuse not to wear a life jacket on the water!

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT LIFE JACKET

Things to Know: Certain life jackets are designed to keep your head above water and help you remain in a position which per-mits proper breathing.

To meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements, a boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III, or V life jacket for each per-son aboard. Boats 16 feet and over must have at least one Type IV throwable device as well.

All states have regulations regarding life jacket wear by chil-dren. Adult-sized life jackets will not work for children. Special life jackets are available. To work correctly, a life jacket must be worn, fit snugly, and not allow the child’s chin or ears to slip through.

Life jackets should be tested for wear and buoyancy at least once each year. Waterlogged, faded, or leaky jackets should be discarded.

• Life jackets must be properly stowed. • A life jacket — especially a snug-fitting flotation coat or deck-suit style — can help you survive in cold water. • How Do Life Jackets Save Lives? • When capsized in rough water. • When sinking in unexpectedly heavy sea conditions. • When thrown from the boat as a result of a collision. • When injured by rocks or submerged objects.

• When unconscious from carbon monoxide fumes. • When tossed into freezing water. • When thrown off balance while fishing.

All recreational boats must carry one wearable lifejacket (Type I, II, III or Type V lifejacket) for each person aboard. A Type V life-jacket provides performance of either a Type I, II, or III lifejacket (as marked on its label) and must be used according to the label requirements. Any boat 16ft and longer (except canoes and kay-aks) must also carry one throwable lifejacket (Type IV lifejacket).

CHILD LIFEJACKET REQUIREMENTS • Some states require that children wear lifejackets • applies to children of specific ages • applies to certain sizes of boats • Check with your state boating safety officials

Walleye, yellow perch bag limits announced Lake Erie anglers can expect to enjoy another year of diverse fishing opportunities in 2014, according to Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) biologists.

“While fishing success always varies among species and seasons, we expect that anglers will find success on the wa-ters of Lake Erie this year,” said Jeff Ty-son, Lake Erie fisheries program man-ager for the ODNR Division of Wildlife. “The lake’s population of walleye, yel-low perch, black bass, white bass and steelhead remains stable, with a very broad distribution of sizes for each spe-cies.”

Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch fisheries are managed through an in-teragency quota system that involves Ontario, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio. Each jurisdiction regulates their catches to comply with quotas and to minimize the risk of over-fishing these species. Quotas for the upcoming fishing season are de-termined through a consensus agree-ment by these jurisdictions through the Lake Erie Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, which were recently announced for 2014.

As a result of the 2014 quota alloca-tion, the daily bag limit will be six wall-eye from May 1 through Feb. 28, 2015. From March 1, 2015, through April 30, 2015, the daily walleye bag limit will be four. A 15-inch minimum size limit is in effect during the entire season for wall-eye. The daily yellow perch bag limit is 30 from May 1 through April 30, 2015, with no minimum size limit. Lake Erie an-glers can find walleye and yellow perch bag limit information at ODNR offices, in special publications at bait and tack-le shops and online at wildohio.com.

Walleye Ohio walleye anglers in 2014 will catch fish from the 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2003 hatches, with some fish from the 2011, 2008 and 2012 year class-

es. Walleye from the 2012 hatch will be present in the fishery with most indi-viduals near or over the 15-inch mini-mum size limit fairly early in the 2014 fishing season. Walleye from the mod-erate 2010 hatch will range from 18 to 23 inches, while walleye from the 2007 hatch will be more than 20 inches. The 2003 and 2007 hatches are likely to carry most of the Central Basin fisher-ies. These walleye will contribute to the population that has a good number of fish over the 26-inch range. Large wall-eye from the strong hatch in 2003 will continue to provide “Fish Ohio” oppor-tunities (greater than 28 inches), with this year class nearing the size that may give Ohio a new state record walleye.

Yellow Perch Expect good perch fishing in 2014, with the largest fish in the eastern areas of the Central Basin. Perch anglers should encounter fish ranging from 7 to 13 inches from the 2012 through 2007 hatches in this year’s fishery, with major contributions from the 2010, 2008 and 2007 year classes. Fish from the average hatches in 2007 will contribute fish in the 10 inch and greater range. In 2013, yellow perch fisheries flourished in the eastern por-tions of Ohio’s Lake Erie, and ODNR biologists expect this trend to continue into 2014.

Black Bass Smallmouth bass fish-ing in 2014 is expected to be fair but improving. Smallmouth bass catch rates in 2013 were slightly below those seen in 2012, but were still some of the highest observed since the mid-1990s. Smallmouth bass caught should be an excellent size (14 to 22 inches, weigh-ing up to 6 pounds). The best fishing for smallmouth bass will continue to occur in areas with good bottom structure, which is the available habitat across much of the entire Ohio nearshore and

islands areas. Continuing the trend from previous years, largemouth bass fishing should be excellent in 2014. This emerging fishery is producing high catch rates and some large fish in nearshore areas and har-bors across Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline. All black bass (smallmouth and largemouth) must be immediately released from May 1 through June 27 of this year. Be-ginning June 28, the daily bag limit for bass is five, with a 14-inch minimum length limit.

Steelhead Steelhead anglers should enjoy another year of great fishing in 2014 on Ohio’s Lake Erie open waters and tributaries. Peak summer steelhead action on Lake Erie can be found offshore from June through

August between Vermilion and Conneaut, with catch-es measuring 17 to 29 inches. Most Lake Erie anglers troll for steelhead in deep waters using spoons with dipsy divers or downriggers until fish move close to shore in the fall. The daily bag limit remains five fish per angler from May 16 through Aug. 31, and two fish per angler between Sept. 1, 2014, and May 15, 2015. A 12-inch minimum size limit is in effect throughout the year.

White Bass White bass continue to provide ex-cellent seasonal fishing opportunities in the Maumee and Sandusky rivers and in the open lake. The 2014 catch will be dominated by fish from the 2012, 2011

and 2010 year classes. Fish from 2006 could be as large as 16 inches. An-glers should focus on ma-jor Western Basin tribu-taries during May and June and nearshore areas of the open lake during the summer. There is no daily white bass bag or size limit.

Other Species Bays, harbors and main lake

shorelines offer excellent fishing for panfish, as well as the occasional northern pike and muskellunge in vegetated areas. Anglers are reminded that fishing conditions on Lake Erie can change hourly, and ad-justments are often necessary to improve success. Anglers should take into account factors such as wa-ter temperature, cloud cover, water clarity, boat traf-fic, wave action, structure, currents and the amount of baitfish in the area. Anglers are also reminded to carefully monitor the Lake Erie weather and to seek safe harbor before storms approach.

ODNR WARNS OF DANGERS OF COLD WATERAs cabin fever gives way to long-awaited sunshine and warm temperatures, water temperatures are still very cold. Lake Erie’s water temperature is around 40 degrees, and water temperatures in Ohio’s inland lakes and rivers are also cold. In 40 degree water, even the best swimmers will experi-ence complete exhaustion in 15 minutes. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) reminds everyone to wear a life jacket when boating. Wearing a life jack-et can buy precious time and save lives. “People can have as little as 15 minutes before they lost control of the muscles in their arms and legs in response to cold water,” said Gary Obermiller, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. “It can be very difficult to locate, put on and buckle a life jacket in the water. If your life jacket is al-ready on, it can help conserve your energy.” If the water temperature is less than 50 degrees, the window of opportunity for res-cue is only a few minutes if the person is not dressed for the water conditions. Informa-tion on how to dress for the water tempera-ture is available at watercraft.ohiodnr.gov.

Filing a float plan and making sure friends and family know where you are boating and when you are expected back is also very important. Information to include in a float plan:

• Trip leader or person who filed float plan (name, address, phone)

• Number of passengers• Passengers (name, phone)• Boat (type, length, motor, color, OH

number)• Towing vehicle (make/model, year,

color, license plate, location where parked)

• Trailer (make/model, color license plate, location where parked)

• Trip information (leaving from where, date, time, activity, date and time of anticipated stops)

• Communication or signal equipment (type of radio, call number, cell phone, type of signal device on board)

• Emergency information (date and time you should return, name and phone of who to contact if you don’t return by that time) A sample float plan boaters can use is available at watercraft.ohiodnr.gov.

Nearly 90 percent of boating fatalities are due to drowning and nearly half of those are attributed to the effects of immersion in cold water. Water cooler than the normal

body temperature of 98.6 de-grees causes heat loss. Cold water will cool a body 25 times faster than cold air of the same temperature. Total immersion in cold water is very painful, and the disorientation victim can quickly panic. With these com-bined reactions, the victim may drown quickly. The best preven-tion for this danger is to wear a life jacket. Falling into cold water triggers the body’s cold water immersion responses, begin-ning with an uncontrollable gasping reflex. A well-fitter life jacket will keep a person’s airway out of the water, which is most im-portant when the gasping reflex begins. Heart rate and blood pressure increase dramatically, increasing the risk for cardiac arrest. The victim may hyperventilate and

find it difficult to get air into the lungs. Given the person’s ability to keep his or her head above water and stay afloat, the following chart provides a general idea of survival times in water of varying tempera-tures. Factors that may alter these estimates include clothing or protective gear, the in-dividual’s health condition and water condi-tions. The ODNR Division of Watercraft en-sures boating safety and improved access on Lake Erie, the Ohio River, Ohio’s 600 inland lakes and 60,000 miles of rivers, streams and waterways. The division also conducts water safety education, registers and titles watercraft, and protects Ohio’s scenic rivers. ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR web-site at ohiodnr.gov.

A book launch party will be held on May 17 at 3:30 p.m. at the Twisted Sisters Gallery at 318 West Main in Marblehead for the release of award-winning Put-in-Bay novelist Bob Adamov’s eighth novel, Zenobia: The Patriot Way. The novel involves human trafficking along the I-75 corridor from Toledo to Naples. Part of the proceeds will be donated to Second Chance, a Toledo-based transition center for trafficking victims, and The Human Trafficking Coalition of Lucas County.

Human trafficking is much more significant in Ohio than many realize and Adamov uses Zenobia: The Patriot Way to focus enhanced awareness and understanding of this tragic crime against women and children. The novel includes an introductory foreword written by Tasha Perdue, Executive Director of the Human Trafficking Coalition of Lucas County. Adamov also worked with Lucas

County Juvenile Court Judge Connie Zemmelman, Detective Peter Swartz of the Toledo Police Department and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office in Naples, Florida as he researched the story of human trafficking.

“I thought I was a pretty savvy guy, but what I learned during my research for this novel is not at all fictional and it stunned me,” said Adamov. “I hope Zenobia: The Patriot Way opens the eyes of others as much as it did mine.”

Adamov’s new website www.BobAdamov.com also includes information about Human Trafficking and a short film Shadow of the Heartland.

Zenobia continues the popular and growing Emerson Moore series first created by Adamov in 2002 with the release of Rainbow’s End, his first action mystery thriller. Adamov then followed with his string of island bestsellers that include Pierce the Veil, When Rainbows Walk, Promised Land, The Other Side of Hell, Tan Lines, and in 2013 Sandustee, which won an award at Chicago’s Great Midwest Book Festival in November. Adamov’s writing style has been compared to internationally acclaimed bestseller authors Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy.
