Tzedakah: Charity The obligation to perform tzedakah can be fulfilled by giving money to the poor, to health care institutions, to synagogues or to educational institutions. It can also be fulfilled by supporting your children beyond the age when you are legally required to, or supporting your parents in their old age. The obligation includes giving to both Jews and gentiles; contrary to popular belief, Jews do not just take care of our own.

Contributions:We appreciate the thoughtfulness of those who remember and honor their friends and loved ones through their donations.

The B’nai Mitzvah Partythat followed was nothing short of Hollywood style. From the props to the plate settings.

Everyone enjoyed the wide variety of healthy choices. Veggies and fruit for the health conscious and candy for the sweet tooth in all of us.

Also, a photo booth provided every-one with the opportunity to feel like a star.

Hello hello,My name is Gali Rosas and I teach the youngest group of students at the Temple Beth El Sunday School. I love the age group that I work with be-cause, besides the obvious cute factor, they are new to Judaism and to the world, and as such have a curiosity that is amazing to witness and share.

Before I came to Temple Beth El, I spent my time in New York , helping my older brother and sister to teach our Israeli-born parents that Thanksgiving is a holiday for turkey, not brisket, among other lessons. Despite our demand for American traditions, my siblings and I were surrounded by Jewish/Israeli tradi-tions too. No matter where I go in the world, I will always appreciate a fresh baked pita full of shawarma and a Prigat grape juice, and my mom will always set a place for me at the Passover seder.

Moving away from home has been hard at times, but I consider myself very lucky to have found such a warm and welcoming new home. Since starting at Temple Beth El I have become a wife and the proud parent of an adopted border collie mix. As I embark on this new adventure, I am grateful to be part of a community that shares the traditions of my past, and am eager to adopt new Texas traditions for the future.

Thank you and shalom, Gali

Hebrew Cemetery News

Hebrew Cemetery News – June 2014Dr. Harry Kalman Lowe was born in 1878, and was the grandson of Dr. Arthur S. Wolff. Dr. Wolff was the quarantine officer in Brownsville during the Yellow Fever epidemic who caused an international incident when he quarantined an officer in the Mexican Army.

As a young man, Dr. Lowe would go with his grandfather on his rounds. Yes, in those days doctors made house calls. He studied with his grandfather and then attended The Univer-sity of Texas in Austin from 1897 to 1904. He passed the New York Medical Board as well as the Texas and Mexico Medical Boards. In 1907, Dr. Lowe returned to Brownsville to practice medicine as a physician and surgeon. He served as the city health officer until he entered into military service in 1916 as a medical officer. He served with distinction in France and Germany during World War I attaining the rank of Major by 1918.

Dr. Lowe returned to Brownsville in 1920 to resume his practice and was reappointed as city physician. He took up golf and became a local champion golfer. He also was a leader in the growing Jewish community in Brownsville and helped gather money for building the new Temple Beth-El synagogue which was built in the Riverside Addition of Brownsville. He died before he had a chance to see the completed building.

In 1932, a laborer came into Dr. Lowe’s office with a thorn in his hand which had become infected. It would be years before Penicillin would be available and Dr. Lowe had few treatment options. After treating the man as best he could, the man died. Unfortunately, while trying to cure the infection, some of the patient’s blood entered into Dr. Lowe’s blood through a small cut on his wrist. Dr. Lowe died on August 3, 1932. He is buried with his family in the Hebrew Cemetery.
