HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA WORK THAT CONTINUES INTO SHABBOS As we established previously, as a general rule, one is permitted to begin a process of work on Erev Shabbos that will then continue on its own during Shabbos (OC 252:1). This rule is however subject to certain important exceptions. 1) It is not permitted to begin a process before Shabbos if the continuation of the process would “invite” additional interventions on Shabbos (OC 252:1). Thus we have limi- tations regarding leaving certain foods to cook on Shabbos without a Blech because of a concern that we might adjust the fire on Shabbos to control the cooking (OC 253). We will bez”h explore this issue in greater detail later. 2) Certain processes that are very audible and very obvious should not be allowed to continue on Shab- bos unless absolutely necessary. The classic example of this is a water-powered mill that functions automatically; nevertheless one should not start it up before Shabbos as the continued operation of the mill on Shabbos is disturbing to the atmosphere and honor of Shabbos (OC 252:5). Applications of this rule vary significantly, how- ever it is a factor in limiting us from operating things like washing machines and dishwashers on Shabbos even where they are set and turned on before Shabbos. PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK
WHOSE AGENT WAS HE?
When it is time for Yitzchak to marry, Avraham appoints Eliezer as his
messenger/agent to go to his homeland and find a suitable wife for Yitzchak. While
it was for Yitzchak's wife, nevertheless it is Avraham who sends Eliezer and defines
his mission. When Eliezer returns successfully from this mission, he encounters
Yitzchak and reports to him all that had transpired. Yitzchak proceeds to marry
Rivkah, bringing her into the tent that Sarah his mother had previously occupied.
Interestingly, in the entire description of the successful conclusion of the mission,
no mention is made of Avraham. Despite the fact that he is the one who appointed
Eliezer, he is apparently never properly informed that the mission was accom-
plished, and he does not participate in the actual wedding. Doesn't this seem odd in
light of his significant initial involvement?

WORK THAT CONTINUES INTO SHABBOS
As we established previously, as a general rule, one is permitted to begin a
process of work on Erev Shabbos that will then continue on its own during Shabbos
(OC 252:1). This rule is however subject to certain important exceptions. 1) It is not
permitted to begin a process before Shabbos if the continuation of the process
would “invite” additional interventions on Shabbos (OC 252:1). Thus we have limi-
tations regarding leaving certain foods to cook on Shabbos without a Blech because
of a concern that we might adjust the fire on Shabbos to control the cooking (OC
253). We will bez”h explore this issue in greater detail later. 2) Certain processes
that are very audible and very obvious should not be allowed to continue on Shab-
bos unless absolutely necessary. The classic example of this is a water-powered mill
that functions automatically; nevertheless one should not start it up before Shabbos
as the continued operation of the mill on Shabbos is disturbing to the atmosphere
and honor of Shabbos (OC 252:5). Applications of this rule vary significantly, how-
ever it is a factor in limiting us from operating things like washing machines and
dishwashers on Shabbos even where they are set and turned on before Shabbos.
