6 PROJECT DESCRIPTION TOTAL E&P Borneo B.V currently produces gas and hydrocarbon liquids from their Maharaja Lela Jamalulalam (MLJ) field offshore Brunei via two offshore platforms (MLJ1 and MLJ2 respectively). Produced effluent is transported by an 18 multiphase subsea pipeline to the Onshore Processing Plant (OPP). The Maharaja Lela South development (MLS) will be based on production from high-pressure high-temperature wells at a new 12-slot wellhead platform with minimum process facilities, MLJ3 to supplement the production from the existing platforms MLJ1 and MLJ2. Well fluids will be routed to the onshore gas treatment plant, OPP, via a subsea tie-in at the existing MLJ1-OPP Pipeline.

7 EARTHING SYSTEMS To ensure adequate protection to both personnel and equipment up to four (4) earthing systems shall be used (refer to GS-EP-ELE-031)

PE : Equipotential protective earth bonding system IPE : Instrument protective earth system IE : Instrument earth system ISE : Intrinsically safe earth system

7.1 Equipotential Protective Earth Bonding System (PE) Refer to the electrical Project specification Specification Design of Earthing, Bonding and Lightning Protection Systems, ref. [2].

The equipotential protective earth bonding system (PE) shall comprise the platform metallic / steel structures. The earthing system protects electrical equipment, cable and personnel from electric shocks.

At instrument equipment level, PE connection is established by bonding instrument metallic enclosures by mean of the external earthing lug/ screw on the instrument enclosures to adjacent metallic structure. This bonding shall be performed using PVC insulated stranded copper conductors, green and yellow coloured with a minimum of 6mm cross-section.

7.2 Instrument Protective Earth System (IPE) 7.2.1 General The IPE is a protective earth used only for instrumentation equipment and control and safety system equipment. All instrument metallic enclosures and cable armour shall be connected to the IPE. This IPE connection shall be made through the cable armour connected to IPE bar located in the junction box. The IPE continuity from junction box to marshalling cabinet is ensured by the armour of multi pair cable. The IPE bar in marshalling cabinet is then connected to the platform PE by mean of 35mm2 cross section green-yellow PCV insulated stranded copper conductors.

7.2.2 Field Instruments For typical field instruments, earthing continuity between braided armour and instrument casing shall be achieved by a metallic cable gland with stowing facility (Refer to MLJ3 Platform Specification Instrumentation Design And Installation, ref. [3], for cable gland definition). The field instrument casing bonding to the metallic structures shall be done through the earth lug. For field instruments with non-metallic enclosures, an earth tag shall be fitted to the cable gland to ensure a proper bonding to the platform metallic structure.

7.2.3 Junction Boxes For typical junction boxes, braided armours are connected to a copper gland plate via the cable glands. This copper gland plate, bored and threaded for each gland is connected to an extension earth stud, which shall be bonded to the platform steel structure using an earthing cable of a minimum 16mm cross section. A lock nut shall be provided with each cable gland in order to ensure the good electrical contact with the copper gland plate.

If the junction box is metallic, no earthing plate is required and the cable armour shall be earthed through the cable gland to the junction box wall, which shall be bonded to the steel structures.

7.2.4 System Cabinet, Marshalling Cabinet and Local Control Cabinet System Cabinet, Marshalling Cabinet and Local Control Cabinet shall be fitted with an IPE bar. The instrument cable armour of incoming and outgoing cables, together with the cabinet steel frame, shall be connected to this IPE bar. The cabinet IPE bar shall be connected to the equipotential protective earth bonding network through PVC insulated, copper conductors, green/yellow stripped cables of 35mm

    minimum cross-section.

The control desks (if any) shall be connected to the internal PE loop in the same way as the system cabinets.

Where cabinets or enclosures have hinged doors, the doors shall be bonded to the main steel frame with flexible nickel plated cooper earth straps of minimum 10mm cross section.

7.2.5 Cable Trays / Ladders In process area, cable trays / ladders shall be bonded together with earthing cable of 35 mm2 minimum cross section, refer to section 5.2 of COMPANY General Specification no GS-EP-INS-107. They shall be consistently connected up to the equipotential protective earth bonding network at both ends of the main routes.

7.3 Instrument Earth System (IE) The IE network is the earth reference for all instrument signals except when floating power supply is applied.

All instruments cables individual screens and overall screens shall be connected to the Instrument Earth System. This excludes the external braid of the Digital Communication Network cable, which shall be installed as specified by the systems VENDORS in order to eliminate excess noise

For junction box dedicated to digital signals, individual screen wires shall be connected to an IE bar in each junction box.

For junction box dedicated to analogue signals, individual screen wires shall be connected to dedicated screen terminals, including the individual screen of each pair in the multi-pair cables..

The overall screen of the multi-pair cables shall be connected to the IE bar at the marshalling cabinet. Instrument system / marshalling cabinet shall be fitted with one IE bar. All non-IS multi-pair cable

individual screens and overall screens shall be connected to this IE bar. The IE bus bar shall be connected to the cabinet IPE bar and to the PE network by a cable of 35 mm2 minimum.

7.4 Intrinsically Safe Earth System (ISE) The ISE network is the earth reference for all IS signals and galvanic IS barriers. The ISE and IE earth bars shall be isolated from the chassis and shall be mounted together as close as possible

Intrinsically safe cable shields and screens shall be connected to the ISE bar. The galvanic IS barriers shall be mounted in accordance with the terms of their IS certificate.

For IS junction boxes dedicated to IS measurement signals, screen wires shall be connected to dedicated screen terminals. All the screen terminals shall then be connected to the ISE bar in each junction box.

The overall screen of the multi-pair IS cables shall also be connected to the ISE bar. The galvanic IS barriers installed inside the system cabinets shall be directly mounted onto the galvanic

isolated barrier bus bars. All individual IS multi-pair cable screens shall be connected to these galvanic isolated barrier bus bars,

which in turn are connected to the ISE bar in the cabinet. System cabinets for the Instrument System / marshalling cabinet shall be fitted with one ISE bus bar. All

multi-pair cable individual screens and overall screen of ISE signals shall be connected to this ISE bar. The ISE bus bar shall be connected to the IE bus bar in the same cabinet by a 35 mm2 cable.

8 TESTING OF EARTHING SYSTEM The earthing layout shall be checked to verify if it has been carried out as per the specification. All earth resistances shall be measured and if necessary additional earth connections maybe added to achieve the resistance limits. Earthing arrangement shall comply with the COMPANY General Specification no.GS-EP-ELE-051.

In addition, earthing tests shall be performed on all control panels, cabinets and preassembled unit junction boxes and local panels at the VENDOR premises.

These tests shall, as a minimum, include:

Measurement of earthing resistances, Checking of earthing segregation, Checking of floating power supply.

Cable sections given in this specification are typical only. It is the CONTRACTOR responsibility to ensure the maximum bonding resistance values (e.g. between IE bar to IE loop) are less than 0.5 Ohm.

CONTRACTOR shall test during the construction and pre-commissioning phases each bonding and shall report, in written, the current measured value within relevant report.
