TOPIC PRESENTATION:

A. Introduction

1. Start the session with a video presentation. Present Slide 1 of 03 LCD Slides 1 and click the play icon on the upper right hand of the slide to watch 03 Video 1.

2. After the presentation, ask students the following guide questions:

• What is the primary goal of any business undertaking?

POSSIBLE ANSWER: The primary goal of any business undertaking is to gain a significant market share to earn maximum profit.

• Do you think that the business responsibility ends after gaining profit or a large market share?

POSSIBLE ANSWER: No. Corporations or businesses regardless of their size must consider their social and environmental responsibilities.

• Based on the video presentation, what is the concept of sustainability?

POSSIBLE ANSWER: The concept of sustainability involves creating a balance in the society, environment, and economy. Businesses must consider their impact on the

environment and influence on society in line with their goal for financial success to remain sustainable.

3. Acknowledge students’ participation. After the sharing of ideas, explain to the class that sustainability includes much more than just ecological and environmental concerns. The scope of sustainability has broadened to include economic, social, as well as environmental concerns. Explain to the class that it is sometimes impossible to address the sustainability of the natural environment without considering the social and economic aspects of relevant communities and their activities.

4. Then, present Slide 2 to provide an outline of the new topics to be discussed.

B. Instructional Input

Definition of Sustainability

1. Flash Slide 3. Explain to the class that a classic example of sustainability involves a situation wherein environmentalists oppose industrialization and road building programs of the government because of their effect on wildlife and conservation efforts. While others point to the benefits to local communities of less traffic congestion and more jobs brought by the idea of industrialization.

2. Discuss the definition and the “Triple Bottom Line” (TBL) of sustainability. Refer to Page 1 of 03 Handout 1.

1. For Slides 4-13. Tell the class that a business practice which is economically viable, socially responsible, and environmentally friendly is usually regarded as being sustainable. Corporations that include socially responsible and environmentally sound policies as core elements in their growth strategy often create sustainable economic values.

4. After the activity, display Slide 15. Tell the class that a firm must set defined goals and objectives through the people behind its operation to establish a balance of interests among the stakeholder of the business. Explain that a balance of interests increases the long-term value of a company and its potential for growth. It reduces risk and strengthens company reputation which makes it an important aspect in the success of an organization.

5. Discuss the definition and functions of corporate governance. Refer to Pages 2-3 of the handout.

C. Generalization Steps 1-5 Activity: Think-Tac-Toe Learning Objective(s): LO1 and LO2

1. Flash Slide 16. Conduct an activity called Think-Tac-Toe. Divide the class into two (2) groups and let them huddle. Ask a representative from each group to play the game.

2. Instruct the players that they must create a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal pattern on the 3x3 grid presented on the slide by identifying the sustainable business practice of each global companies displayed on each square that follows their pattern.

3. The first player to start the game will be determined through a toss coin. Then, the players will be given an alternate opportunity to answer. Each player will be given two (2) “Call-a-Friend” powers which they may use to seek help from their group members in explaining the concepts. The first player who will be able to complete a pattern will be declared the winner.

4. After the game, instruct the losing team to associate the pillars of sustainability to each identified sustainable business practice of global companies. Allow the students to explain their answers.

5. Acknowledge students’ participation and correct any misconception.

D. Application Steps 1-3 Activity: Skit Learning Objective(s): LO1, LO2, and LO3

1. Flash Slide 17. Divide the class into four (4) groups and let them huddle. Ask each group to develop a skit that demonstrates their decision-making skills by acting as board members of a multinational corporation.

2. Tell the students to formulate business solutions in solving the following key social issues using the concepts of sustainability and corporate governance:

Tell them to identify a global or local company that employs one (1) of the discussed sustainable practices. Instruct the students that they must adhere to the following guidelines in writing their research:

• A brief explanation of the value proposition of the identified company must be written in the paper.

• An explanation that associates the “Triple Bottom Line” (TBL) to the sustainable practice of their selected company must be cited.

• A brief assessment of the corporate governance initiatives of the selected company must also be included.

2. Instruct the class to submit the research by next meeting and inform them that the homework will be considered as their task performance as well.
