Bluetooth Overview

wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances

Provides a easy way to connect and exchange information between different devices such as faxes, mobile phones, Digital camera, video game consoler e.t.c.

Invented by telecom vendor Ericsson in 1994

It operates in the range of 2400-2483.5 MHZ and with atleast 30 feet distance.

Bluetooth(How it works)

Inquiry Procedure( Hello, Anyone Around?) Sends out an inquire, which is a request

for nearby devices (within 10 meters) Devices that allow themselves to be

discoverable issue an inquiry response Can take up to 10.24 seconds, after

which the inquiring device should know everyone within 10 meters of itself

Then forms a Piconets where each devices acting as a master/slave configuration.

Generally known as master, initiator of the connection and who gives respose is a slave

But can switch roles i.e, the slave can become the master (for example, a headset initiating a connection to a phone will necessarily begin as master, as initiator of the connection; but may subsequently prefer to be slave).

1. Host Controller Interface (HCI) provides a common interface between the Bluetooth host and a

2. Link Layer Control & Adaptation (L2CAP) A simple data link protocol on top of the baseband, also a

connection-oriented & connectionless

3. RFCOMM (based on GSM TS07.10) emulates a serial-port to support a large base of legacy (serial-port-based)

Advantages

These have Replaced cables for transferring Information from one Electronic Device to another one.

These have decreased Strain like carrying phones while talking, making hands free to do another work.

This is cheaply Available. 11

Disadvantages

Data sent between two Bluetooth devices is very slow compared with Wi-Fi transfer Rate.

Range Of a Bluetooth Device is max of 30 feet depending upon the Device.

Security is Biggest Disadvantage as transfer takes place through radio waves and a hacker can easily hack it.
