His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King con-tinues to wear his crown well.

At age 76, he is still light on his feet, sing-ing and playing the blues with relentless pas-sion.

Time has no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of evergreens, Pinewood Bowl Theater in Lincoln’s Pioneers Park offers a night like no other under the stars.

Tickets are available at the Pershing Center box office, all Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. On the day of the concert, tickets are available at the Pinewood Bowl Theater beginning three hours prior to the gates opening.

BLUES-ROCKER TINSLEY ELLIS TO PERFORM IN OMAHA!

Thursday, August 9, 2012The 21st Saloon • 4727 South 96th Street

“Blistering, inspired roadhouse blues and passionate Southern rock, super-charged guitar and gritty, soulful vocals.” -Relix

Blues-rocking guitarist/vocalist Tinsley Ellis will perform at The 21st Saloon in Omaha on Thursday, August 9, 2012. Ellis will be performing songs from his latest Alligator release, SPEAK NO EVIL. Over the course of 11 albums and literally thou-sands of live performances, Ellis is one of today›s most elec-trifying guitarists and vocalists. Rolling Stone says he plays «feral blues guitar...non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor›s edge...his eloquence dazzles...he achieves pyrotechnics that rival early Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.

July Workshop with Sue Foley and Peter Karp

Our BluesEd students were thrilled to attend a workshop on July 5 with songwriters and blues artists, Sue Foley and Peter Karp, who were in Omaha for a performance with The Nighthawks. Peter and Sue shared stories of their diverse professional experiences with the students along with songwriting and performance tips. The students enthusias-tically embraced the knowledge and many mentioned after the workshop that they learned a great deal that they can apply to their future performances. Our BluesEd students so appreciate the mentorship they receive from professional musicians both locally and around the country!WhAT hAppened

There will be no pussy-footin here... This is by-god truck driving country! Dale speaks his mind no doubt about it, and if you didn’t catch it he will repeat it fer ya! The Zoo Bar was absolutely packed tonight. My first viewing of Dale and what a treat he is, likes to mix it up with the crowd and he just has a blast doing his thing. Dale got mobbed after the show but I hung around to thank him for the show and purchase a CD and a vinyl 45 RPM, when I caught up with Dale I told him I was glad I had come this night because of the brutal day I had at work... “Bad day” Dale asked? “Monumental” I replied, adding “it will be back tomorrow, but it’s gone tonight” Dale cocked his head a bit and said “ooh I like that, just might hear that in a song” Have at it Dale, public domain baby!

Hi there,I just thought I’d let you know that the feedback from Us & Them (who all attended the

Peter Karp/Sue Foley workshop today) was very, very positive. They loved all the infor-mation presented and particularly learned a lot during the sound check. Peter’s guitar demonstrations were great and also his tips about songwriting (like never using cliches, etc.) provided the kids with something to think about when tackling lyrics.

Just wanted to send a quick thank you for exposing the kids to such wonderful teachers!Vicky DeCostera

The 44’s are a Los Angeles-based band who play blues-roots-rock music. The 44’s are one the bright-est rising stars on the American blues roots scene. Make no mistake about it. The raw rough and tough sounds generated by these four expert musi-cians during live performances and in the making of their Sophomore album Americana, on the Rip Cat label, demands to be heard by Blues music fans World Wide. They evidence a genuine gift for creating blues in the moment while at the same time show-ing loyalty to a remarkable blues-and-r&b tradition that goes back decades through the James Harman Band and the Red Devils to storied greats like Howlin’ Wolf, Albert Collins, and Muddy Waters. They’ve

become a favorite band of club and festival crowds across North America.

The 44’s seem to be literally explod-ing across the Blues scene as a fully formed and functional unit command-ing audiences with their in your face, yet highly contagious musical sound. Their first Release “Boogie Disease”, Was self produced for $800 with the Help of Guitar Great Kid Ramos (The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Mannish Boys) and was quickly snatched up and issued on Rip Cat Records, hit-ting a peak position of No. 12 on the

national Living Blues radio charts and No.2 on BB King Bluesville Sirius/XM Satellite Radio. Critical praise and industry recognition from the blues community soon fol-lowed. American Blues News Awarded the Band with The Best Blues Band of 2011 and Blues Underground Network Awarded the Band with Best Debut Album.

They play vintage instruments and channel a blues style of days past, but there is a distinct Rawness to this blues award winning quartet. Each band member is in fine form. Johnny Main grounds his outstanding singing and guitar playing in real experience--his talent’s as honest as the day is long. Tex Nakamura has forged his own stirring voice from studying Little Walter and other legendary har-monica mentors. Bassist Mike Turturro with his Gut String Bass and drummer J. R. Lozano’s Vintage Ludwig Kit are as solid a team as any you’ll hear, calibrating rhythmic flow with alertness and intelligence, never calling undue atten-tion to themselves. For their one-of-a-kind blues, The 44’s successfully mine the tension.

Kid Ramos say’s of his experience with The 44’s “They play like their life depends on it and you can quote me” American Blues News Says “One of the Hardest work-ing, hardest playing blues outfits anywhere.”

Touring Non-stop since 2010, they’ve garnered a whole new generation of first-time young blues- roots fans, as well as older ones who recognize the talents of these four musicians. The 44’s are at the top of their game and with the much anticipated Sophomore Release “Americana” on Rip Cat Records. They have brought together a top notch cast of characters. Kid Ramos joins the band in the produc-er’s chair and Guest Guitar Appearances. The Mixing Chair is being filled by the Legendary David Z (Credits Include Buddy Guy, Etta James, John Mayall).

The 44’s were awarded the hardest working band of 2011 for a reason. Playing 200 Club and festival Dates in 2011. They will be continuing the same in 2012 in support of “Americana”

neW MaGIC SlIM, deanna BOGarT releaSeS OUT aUGUST 28thBlind Pig Records has announced an August 28th release date for new recordings by Magic Slim and the Teardrops

and Deanna Bogart, both of whom are past multiple winners of Blues Music Awards.

Magic Slim, turning seventy-five years young later this summer, proves on his newest Blind Pig release, Bad Boy, that he can still deliver the goods. When it comes to complete mastery of the blues in all its aspects and truly genre defining power of performance, he is one bad boy with few if any equals on the scene today. In fact, he is con-sidered by many to be the great-est living proponent of the intense,

electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers.

Keyboardist, pianist, saxophonist, vocalist and songwriter Deanna Bogart is best known as an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and multifaceted musician whose fans value the eclectic diversity of her genre defying sensibilities and talents. For her latest Blind Pig release, Deanna has produced something unique in her recorded work, a beautifully intimate effort entitled Pianoland that spotlights her considerable skills as a solo performer.

Comprising instrumentals and vocal tracks, her own spar-kling compositions and well-chosen covers by the likes of Errol Garner and Harold Arlen, and solo and small group arrangements, Pianoland stands as one of the highlights of Deanna’s brilliant and varied career. Throughout, Pianoland combines technical prowess with Deanna’s signature soul-ful and utterly honest delivery.

The 39th anniversary/Zoo Fest is in the books and these pictures and your memories are what are left for you to re-run thru your mind.

There were some chal-lenges and issues to con-tend with like getting the street filled in and fixed, having Equator like heat conditions to deal with but all in all Pete Wat-ters is smiling! Telling me it all went unbelievably smooth!

As with all events like this Pete wanted to thank first the fans who supported The Zoo Bar and all live music in Lincoln, his fellow business associates on 14th street for giving up their storefronts for the better part of 2 days and the incredible sponsors and volunteers who pulled together as one who make this Zoo Fest happen each and every year!

Pete and Jeff Boehmer of the Zoo Bar do a great job mixing up the music style and talent; this year was no exception... If

you could not find a style of music that would trip your trigger this year, you might just have a busted spring.

Zoo Bar veterans like Tin-sley Ellis, The Bel-Airs, Candye Kane, and Brave Combo, took time out and sent personal messages to Larry Boehmer and the Zoo Bar for what this little Blues Club on 14th & P has meant to not only them but to the countless of entertainers that have stood on that tiny stage and took in the crowds

and all the historic posters left behind by both legends and locals.

Pete tipped his hand a bit towards next year’s 40th anni-versary blast and has begun to negotiate and send offers to some of the biggest names from the past like Rod Piazza, Dave Alvin, James Harman, Marcia Ball, I’d love to see Los Straight-jackets complete with the Pontani Sisters in tow as well.

Let’s not forget the local talent Lincoln has to offer groups like Honeyboy Turner, Mezcal Brothers, Lil Slim Blues Band, Levi William, Kris Lager, Tijuana Gigolos, Lloyd McCarter, Josh Hoyer, and Sean Benjamin, lord it just goes on and on.

Fellow Bluesman Moe Jasinski may have summed up the Zoo Bar the best... Ya know if Moe is not working he’s usually at some sort of Blues event which includes many exotic settings far and wide, and this is what he tells people he meets at these events about the Zoo Bar in Lincoln Ne... “You may have your Palm trees, your mountains, your oceans, your climate, but I will put our Zoo Bar up against any in the world”... Well said Mojo, your next Morgan and Diet is on me.

I’ve been asked what was my favorite show? EASY, Monday thru Saturday is my answer... Thanks Zoo Bar, Thanks Larry Boehmer, and thanks to all of you who made it another success!

-Conrad Good

Kelly Richey BandWednesday, August 22nd, The zoo Bar, 6:00pmThursday, Aug 23rd-The 21st Saloon, 5:30pm

Kelly richey has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.” That’s an apt appraisal of the Lexington, Kentucky native who’s been based in Cincinnati for many years. Richey has often been compared to such greats as Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan because of her ability to capture and entertain an audience with ripping guitar leads that both sing and astonish.

Passionate and electrifying, Kelly Richey is a master guitarist. She has been compared to such greats as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer, Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. A professional touring musician for over 30 years, Kelly enjoys playing traditional blues, blues-based rock, indie folk and ambient blues. Infusing the music with her own inimitable style, Kelly is unique and stands among the best guitarists known today. A powerful singer and songwriter as well, Kelly will astonish you with her scorching leads, powerful vocals, and solid, well-honed musical sensibility.

A little bit about FolkHouse...

For most shows, a fifteen or twenty dollar per person donation is suggested. ALL proceeds go directly to the perform-ers. We are not a business and do not make any money from our concerts. If we were trying to make money, we’d have been out of business a long time ago! FolkHouse is simply a labor of love that gives us great pleasure by opening our home to music lovers and the artists we enjoy.

Sorry, we are not wheelchair accessible, this is our private residence (2440 Fontenelle Blvd. in Omaha), but if a person with disabilities would like to attend a concert, we will what we can to accommodate. Since the concerts are actually in our home, seating is limited. Please call or email in advance to reserve a seat. Plus, it gives us an idea of the size of the audience to expect on the night of the show.

If you would like to be added to our mailing list or placed on the guest list for an upcoming concert, please call (402)598-7955 or send an email to [email protected].

There is limited parking in our driveway and no parking is allowed on Fontenelle Blvd., but there is parking available on all the surrounding side streets. Coffee, soft drinks and light refreshments provided. Feel free to add to the snack table if so inclined. BYOB if you’re over 21.
