Holiday Ball and 2010 AwardeesThe 2010 HBA Holiday Ball was held on Friday,

December 10 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia, SC. Over 300 HBA Members and

their guests attended the black tie optional event this year.

1 . The Holiday Ball marks the end of the current president’s term and the beginning of the year for the next president of the association. David Hilburn completed his term as 2010 President and Wade McGuinn, CMB of the McGuinn Group was installed as 2011 President association. Delivering the oath of office for Wade was his daughter, Kim McGuinn Cox. After Wade was installed, he presented David Hilburn with a plaque commemorating his term, and his wife, Karen, with a bouquet of flowers.

2 . We also took the opportunity to mark the change in the leadership of the HBA of South Carolina during the gathering. HBA of Greater Columbia member Steven Mungo, CMB completed his term as 2010 HBASC President and installed fellow member Mike Lowman as 2011 President. We thank Steven for his service to our members and those throughout the state in 2010 and wish Mike our support for his term this year.

3 . The end-of-the-year celebration is also when we recognize and thank members dedicating their time and resources with the association throughout the year. The first award was the Corporate Member of the Year Award, which is presented to a member company in recognition of their support of the HBA over the year. This year the award was given to Harvey, Casterline & Vallini, LLP. The people that make up this company are active in the HBAGC and have many members in the Sales & Marketing Council. They regularly attend meetings and also contribute financially to HBA and SMC events and meetings through sponsorships. Sheila Harvey serves as Chairperson of the SMC Community Service Committee which spearheads the many charitable projects of the council. We are proud to name them the 2010 Corporate Member of the Year.

4 . Next up, was the William H. Peters Associate Member of the Year Award. The full HBA membership is invited to vote for the recipient of this award via e-ballot. The votes were counted and the 2010 recipient is Judi McLeod of SCE&G Gas Sales. Judi has been a member of the HBA since 2004. In her time at the HBA she has taken an active role in growing the membership of the association. She has participated in numerous membership drives as a team member or team captain. She is currently serving as Co-chair of the HBA Membership Committee, and is a member of the Sales and Marketing Council (SMC). This is the second time she has received this award.

5 . The Byron Crosthwaite Builder Member of the Year Award was also voted on by the HBA membership prior to the Holiday Ball. The recipient of the award this year is Steven Mungo, CMB of The Mungo Companies. As CEO of Mungo Homes, Steven has proven to be a master at adapting to new housing trends and has built more than 5,000 homes in many landmark neighborhoods across the Midlands. Today, Steven’s home building focus expands outside the Columbia area to Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Greenville/Spartanburg, Raleigh, NC, and, most recently, Savannah, Georgia.

Steven has been a member of the HBAGC since 1986. He rose quickly through the Board of Directors and became President of the Association in 1990. During his time at the HBAGC he has been awarded the Builder Executive of the Year from the HBAGC Sales & Marketing Council three times, in 2006 he was inducted into the South Carolina Housing Hall of Fame, and received the Gordon A. Harrison Award in 2007. In 2008, Mungo Homes received the National Housing Quality Award; the home building industry’s highest honor, and the first company in the state to receive the award. Steven recently attained the Certified Master Builder (CMB) designation and is finishing his term as President of the HBA of South Carolina.

Holiday Ball and 2010 AwardeesSteven is a graduate of Wofford College and a native of Columbia. He serves on many local Boards of Directors including that of Lexington Medical Center, EdVenture and the Medical University of S.C., to name a few.

And finally, the Gordon A. Harrison Award was presented. This award is given by the Past Presidents and Associates Vice Presidents of the HBA. Gordon A. Harrison was President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia in 1973, and was named Builder of the Year. He died the following year at the age of 52. Gordon was described as “a fine gentleman and a delightful person to know, always ready to lend a helping hand.”

In his own words he left this message, “I believe that this year we have gained some ground in being recognized. I am confident that we will continue this step forward. We need to be known and heard. But we need to continue to upgrade our standards and maintain our integrity so that when we are heard, we will be respected.”

6 . The award recognizes a Builder Member who projects a community image that adds to the association, exemplifies standards promoted and supported by the association, institutes creative and innovative ideas that have improved the housing industry, and/or has unquestionable character and integrity. The recipient of the 2010 Gordon A. Harrison Award is George Delk of C & C Builders of Columbia. George has been a member of the HBA since 1987 and served as President of the association in 2008. He has served as President of the HBA Political Education Committee, an HBASC Director, and an appointee to the HBA Charitable Foundation Board. George has been a member of many HBAGC committees and councils including the Disaster Relief Team, Builder/REALTOR Joint Legislative Committee, Land Development Council and the Sales & Marketing Council. He has also served as President of the Kershaw County Chapter of the HBA.

George and his family moved to Pontiac, SC from Whittier, CA when he was only one year old, and he has lived here ever since. George attended Spring Valley High School and then started in trim work with his father. He found steady work with Carl Brazell, a homebuilder in Elgin, who encouraged him to build his first spec home. He has been building homes ever since.

Following the presentations, the attendees enjoyed an evening of dinner, drinks and dancing. A special thanks to the many sponsors of the evening and everyone in attendance.

A General Membership Meeting was held Thursday, January 20 at Seawell’s in Columbia. Over 150 members and guests were in attendance, making for a very good crowd. The meeting began at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails and networking. This was our first meeting since November, so members seemed ready to get back to the regular schedule.

Members had the opportunity to meet with the meeting sponsor during this networking session. Special thanks to Norbord Industries, Inc. for sponsoring the first meeting of the year. Company representative and HBA Member Craig Doehner brought a display and sample materials for members to learn more about the company.

Speaking about banking for small businesses in 2011 were Mike Crapps, President/CEO of First Community Bank; Robert Dozier, President/COO of Homeowners Mortgage; and Lloyd Hendricks, President/CEO of the SC Bankers Association. The overall message of our three speakers was that banks and bankers are ready to do business with builders, and the best thing you can do is get to know your lender and work together with them for a positive future.

We wrapped up the meeting by presenting the SPIKE Awards for members who reached new levels in the club. We then held the Jackpot D r a w i n g . Congratulations to Bill Boyte who won the cash jackpot. Steve Hendrix picked up a discount at Blue Marlin in the second drawing.

The membership of the Green Building Council of

Greater Columbia met on Thursday, January 27 at

Seawell’s for the first Quarterly Meeting of the 2011.

Nearly 40 members and guests were in attendance.

This year, the council is focusing on education on the

major components of sustainable housing. For this

first meeting, we took a close look at the building

envelope and how it’s design and construction is a

major step towards building a green home.

Our speakers for this meeting were council chairman

Joseph Gilmore and Builder member Stan O’Brien.

Their presentation took a plan that Stan is currently

building and they used computer models to determine

the efficiency and cost had the plan been built using

different techniques and materials.

One of the most surprising pieces of information they

presented was that building to Energy Star guidelines

would cost less to build than just building to code.

Going further than Energy Star would start raising

the cost, but not by as much as most people think.

2011 is here and I could not be more excited to serve

as the Sales and Marketing Council Chairperson.

The SMC Board of Directors and I are working

hard to create new networking and education opportunities

for our members to help them achieve their sales goals and

maximize their success this year. While many people are

glad to bid 2010 goodbye, the past year has taught us

that we have to be conscious of what activities will provide

the biggest return on our investment. For this reason, we

are packing this year’s calendar with more affordable and

value added benefits for our members such as free tax tips,

new ways to market to consumers through video blogging,

and reduced sponsorship costs to name a few.

Our strength has always been in our member participation.

If you have an interest in serving on a committee, speaking

at a wits and grits educational program, or sponsoring a

quarterly meeting call myself or a member of the board

today. We encourage you to get involved and take

advantage of the many benefits a membership in the Sales

and Marketing council can provide.

Sincerely,

Marlene Sheard

Hal Von Nessen, MIRM, Founder and President of RESH Marketing, received the William “Bill” Molster award from the National Sales and Marketing Council at the 2011 International Builder’s Show, held the second week of January in Orlando, Florida. The award is named for Bill Molster, who founded the National Sales and Marketing Council for the National Association of Home Builders. Since

1965, this award has been given annually to individuals who have made major contributions to the National Sales and Marketing Council and the housing industry. “Since starting a marketing consulting firm more than 30 years ago, Hal has shown incomparable dedication and service to the housing industry. In addition to being recognized by the American Advertising Federation with the Silver Medal for his contributions to advertising, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in marketing and advertising at the University of South Carolina and Webster University, served as President of the Institute of Residential Marketing (IRM), served on the boards of both IRM and NSMC; and is a top-rated national instructor for all IRM educational courses,” said Joanne Chappell-Theunissen, Chairman, National Sales and Marketing Council (NSMC). He has provided marketing assistance and strategy to Home Builder Associations across the country, working to strengthen the member services they offer. Consistently dedicated to the betterment of the industry, he devoted efforts nationally, regionally and locally to writing, producing, and presenting educational programs to support the housing industry. L o n g - t i m e Mungo Homes’ employee Larry Slice was recently honored with the prestigious M e r i t o r i o u s Service Award by the Central C a r o l i n a R E A L T O R S Association.

The award honors the REALTOR who has been committed to the

success and achievements of the Association. CCRA Board President Edmund H. Monteith, Jr. praised Larry for his tireless dedication and generosity to not only the Association but to his friends, family and the community. According to Monteith, “His years of service here at CCRA and all his well-known efforts in the community made him the perfect choice for this award.”

Larry has been a member of the Mungo organization for more than 36 years and, as a mentor and friend, is a valued member of the staff.

MUngo brothers donate $90,000 to free Medical clinic

In memory of their father, the late Michael J. Mungo, brothers Stewart and Steven Mungo recently donated $90,000 to the Columbia Free Medical Clinic.

Dennis Coker, Executive Director of the Free Medical Clinic, said, “This is an incredible, incredible gift and we’re very thankful. Healthcare is important and the homeless and less-fortunate should not go without.”

Coker explained that every dollar donated generates $8 for services, so the Mungo’s substantial gift will provide more than $700,000 in healthcare.

Established in 1984, The Free Medical Clinic provides quality healthcare, at no cost, to those who cannot pay for such services and who have no health insurance. The Clinic provides primary care for indigent patients from Richland and Lexington Counties, but also from 18 other counties. Services are free of charge due to the efforts of dedicated volunteers and faithful financial support from the three area hospital systems, corporations, organizations, the United Way of the Midlands, churches and individual donors in the Columbia metropolitan area.

C-CORE officially began serving the country October 2010 and South Carolina was privileged to have two of the initial sites placed here, one in Columbia and the other in Greenville. To aid the success of the program we have partnered with the organizations that are the lifeblood of our industry in those respective areas, the Home Builders Associations. Each month, the associations meet with their general membership to network, learn, and highlight industry happenings. January’s meetings were held on the 20th and to ensure we maximized our activity in the month designated to highlight mentoring, C-CORE had highlights and focus activities at both meetings.

In Columbia, partnering organizations Epworth Children’s Home and Heyward Career and

Technology Center heard about what was taking place through our mentoring program and attended our January General Membership Meeting to expose the youth to one of the many activities taking place in the Home Builders Association. While this was more of a formal meeting, it gave eight coaches and 15 youths the opportunity to have dinner with our HBA members, network, and most importantly show those other interested members how much progress is being made.

In Greenville, new president Michael Moore and Executive officer Michael Dey granted us table-top advertising space and most importantly, valuable presentation time to their over 100 members in attendance. Three of our C-CORE coaches (Aloysius Anderson – Real Estate Agent,

Rodney Taylor – Builder/Greenville native, and April Evans – Associate Congressman Bob Inglis’ office/Greenville native) attended the meeting to represent the diverse backgrounds capable of serving our youth and to share one-on-one experiences about the program. After gaining greater insight about C-CORE, members left excited about mentoring and the future of our industry.

The opportunities to Coach/Mentor remain plentiful and we would love to have your expertise as a tool to be shared with the young people in this program. They believe in our industry enough to join, now let’s show them we believe in them by becoming a mentor. For more information, please contact Cory Lorick at 803.256.6238 or [email protected].

The HBA once again held a Builder Speed Dating event on Tuesday, February 1 at Seawell’s. This time the event focused on remodelers and custom builders. Fifteen Builders and Remodelers met with 16 Associate Members for this unique meeting experience. Each associate member gets eight minutes of undivided attention from a builder, then we blow the whistle and the builder moves to the next table. This continues until every builder has met with every associate and they have learned more about each and what they have to offer.

We plan to of fer this special event more times this year as both Builders and Associates come away having had a great experience. Keep an eye on the HBA calendar for the next Builder Speed Dating.
