Coming in BluePrint 3.2

New Adaptive Templates Adaptive Templates™ in BluePrint-PCB provide a new methodology for retaining custom modifications to expanded table templates. Users can expand table templates, such as Drill Charts and Parts List tables, modify the expanded table and then have those modifications retained on successive CAD Data import for ECO revisions. This article discusses BluePrint-PCB templates and the new functionality called Adaptive Templates™ that provides a unique solution for capturing and maintaining custom edits for BluePrint-PCB templates.

Templates in BluePrint-PCBBluePrint-PCB Templates are table or graphic pattern definitions that are used to display CAD data in PCB documentation, also known as a Release Package. The Release Package can include Fabrication Drawings and Assembly Drawings. Examples of Templates in BluePrint-PCB include Drill Charts and Parts List tables. Users can define a generic table design with headers and data columns using Templates that are independent of the content of a PCB CAD design. Templates are expanded with PCB CAD data by placing the CAD data in the so-called repeatable rows of Templates. Templates are automatically updated or refreshed with new CAD data each time successive revisions of CAD data are imported into a BluePrint-PCB Release Package. Templates thus provide synchronized views into the current CAD data that is imported into the BluePrint-PCB.

Modifying Expanded Templates and ECO RevisionsExpanded templates can be modified or customized by users after CAD data is expanded in the repeatable rows. The expanded tables are similar to tables in any word processing application. Users can add or delete rows. Users can change row width or height. Users can add text or drawing elements (graphics) to table cells. Users can insert references (hyperlinks) to other objects; references include URL’s or note references. Essentially, users can modify the expanded table to look in any manner desired.

The problem exists for normal BluePrint-PCB templates that any and all of the above custom edits will be lost when users update the CAD Data in the Release Package by reimporting the CAD Data for an ECO revision. For example, any text updates, inserted Feature Control Frames or inserted Note References will be lost on the CAD Data import of ECO revisions. All manual edits must to be re-entered to restore the desired customization each time the CAD data is imported and the template is refreshed.

Adaptive Templates™ Provide the SolutionAdaptive Templates™ provide a solution to retaining the customization of the expanded templates. When Adaptive Templates™ are enabled, all custom edits are highlighted for the user. Further, when an Adaptive Template™ is edited, the custom edits are visibility retained. Finally, and most importantly, when an expanded Adaptive Template is refreshed with new CAD data or re-executed, all the custom edits are retained. Adaptive Templates™ provide a ready means for users to make manual edits to their CAD data tables (such as Drill Charts and Parts List tables) and have those custom edits retained without further worry on reimport of CAD Data for ECO revisions.

Intuitive. Fast. Thorough. Affordable.“With DFMStream, we not only address the need for easy-to-use DFM tools but also introduce necessary functionality to help in the process of releasing PCB designs to manufacturing. This is the VALOR alternative,” states Rick Almeida, Founder of DownStream.

Preparing PCB design data to be released to manufacturing is a critical and often fragile step in the new product introduction (NPI) process. Designs that work in a virtual PCB CAD system may unknowingly break critical manufacturing rules resulting in delayed delivery times as deviations and work-arounds are performed at the manufacturer. In the case of a manufacturer who “fixes” a design, the resolution could actually change the original design intent and then, if the “fix” is not fed back into the source EDA CAD data, will result in repeated violations when the board is to be built again.

The combination of deep DFM verification with an intuitive user interface makes it easy for even an infrequent user to have access to powerful DFM capabilities. It is in stark contrast to competitive products that, because of their complex user interface, often require dedicated staff to operate.

DFMStream bridges the gap between engineering and fabrication, helps save valuable time, and reduces new product introduction bottle necks.

• Provides powerful DFM Functionality

• Easy-to-Learn / Easy-to-Use

• Easy to implement as part of the everyday design flow

• Saves time, increases productivity, and facilitates fabrication success

Fabrication SuccessPCB Designs which pass electrical verification within the PCB CAD system may unknowingly contain critical manufacturing flaws. These flaws are discovered when the virtual design is being transformed into a physical PCB assembly. In many cases these flaws create costly delays in PCB manufacturing as manufacturers address the issues in pre-production.

While manufacturers are fully capable of addressing these critical issues, resolutions are rarely fed back into the source CAD data resulting in repeated DFM violations on later runs. In worse case scenarios, design intent may also be unknowingly sacrificed when a third party alters your designs.

DFMStream can be configured and implemented into any design flow regardless of budget constraint. This enables engineering organizations to outfit entire design teams with DFMStream ultimately reducing engineering costs, staffing and bottlenecks when assimilating design data into manufacturing.

Release 10.6 FAQ

Q: Do I need a new license file?A: Yes. The new license file is part of the installation program you downloaded. To get this, choose “install license file from media” during installation. If you have received a license file since the 10.6 release, use that license file with the “browse to license file” option.

Q: Do I need to uninstall the older release?A: No. If the version number is the same, then the installation will remove the software before installing. If the version number is different (such as 10.5), then it will remain on your system. To remove software manually, use add/remove programs in Control Panels

Q: How do I update my keyed (USB or Parallel Port) copy of CAM350?A: Just install the product normally. Make sure your key is plugged in during install. Choose “install license file from media”.

Q: How do I update my keyless copy of CAM350?A: Just install the product normally.

Q: How do I update my Floating/Network copy of CAM350?A: Server needs to be updated with the new license file and daemons first. With the 10.6 release we now have FlexLM v 11.10 which includes a new act_inc.exe daemon. This new daemon will support the older versions of CAM350 as well. Once the Server has been updated, install CAM350 10.6 normally.

Q: How do I update my license server?A: The downloaded installation media for CAM350 includes the latest license management software and license file. Just run the install media on the license server and choose “install license file”. If the version of FlexLM needs update, it will update it. If not, it will only replace the license file and restart the license service.

Q: Is there any problem with the license update process on the server if there are other FlexLM services?A: No. Each service has its own name. The installation media will only update the copy of Flexlm in the folder in c:\downstreamtech\licensemanager. But if you prefer to do the update manually contact [email protected] for instructions.

Q: I am running a Virtual Machine environment. How do I install the latest version of CAM350?A: Please contact [email protected] before attempting the installation. The latest version of our software does support VM, but you’ll need assistance with the installation. VMware has a specific set of licensing rules.
