Blue Grass Updates

Construction now more than 82 percent complete

Systemization activities now more than 18 percent complete

Excavation for Container Handling Building

Excavation and installation of utilities for Medical Facility and Personnel Maintenance Building

Heat trace and insulation of Hydrolysate Storage Area tanks

Continuing installation of Munitions Demilitarization Building filter area ductwork including connection to the Clean-Air Exhaust Stacks

Sheet metal workers get their ducts in a row on the Munitions Demilitarization Building filter banks. Facility air will be cleaned and monitored here before being released to the environment.

Completed successful 30 percent design review with the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection in March – 60 percent design review anticipated to

take place in June– 90 percent design review by the end of

July Shared 30 percent design information

with EDT Working Group members Resource Conservation and Recovery

Act permit application March 2014– Initial public comment period closed

mid-May

Laboratory Testing

9

This summer, the Laboratory will start receiving dilute mustard agent for testing

BGCAPP’s plan is to inform stakeholders at least four to six weeks prior to the arrival of dilute agent

The Laboratory Building is systemized and staff are preparing to receive dilute agent for testing.

Cyanide Treatment

BGCAPP is focusing on engineering controls and treatment to provide better protection for workers during plant operations

Enhancing Munitions Demilitarization Building (MDB) heating to Energetics Neutralization Reactors (ENRs) to increase operating temperature

– Safely and efficiently destroys more than 95 percent of cyanide

– Does not change neutralization process– Does not alter Supercritical Water Oxidation

process– Does not impact weapons destruction baseline

schedule

MDB systems enhancements

– Insulating jacket placed around reactors– Heat exchanger added to increase temperatures– Heat exchanger added to cool sampling line

Above, a graphic of the Energetics Neutralization Reactors in the Munitions Demilitarization Building. Below, a representative heat exchanger.

National Research Council (NRC) Studies

11

NRC will conduct a study to determine an alternative approach to hydrolysate treatment at PCAPP and BGCAPP– Prior to the study, NRC members will conduct a meeting in

Colorado and Kentucky– BGCAPP’s study will be completed summer 2015– The project will share data and previous studies with NRC

CAC/CDCAB chairs reviewed Statement of Task Opportunity for community engagement with NRC as the study

continues (January 2015)
