COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After as-sisting USA head coach Geno Auriemma (University of Connecticut) to the gold medal and a 6-0 record at the 2014 FIBA World Championship, USA Basketball today announced DePaul University’s Doug Bruno, the Minnesota Lynx’ Cheryl Reeve and University of South Carolina’s Dawn Staley will return as assistant coaches for the USA Women’s National Team through the 2016 Olympic Games. The coaching staff was selected by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Steering Commit-tee, approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors and is pending approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The three coaches will work with Auriem-ma at various USA National Team training camps in 2015 and 2016 and with the 2016 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team at the 2016 Olympic Games, which will be held Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This marks the second Olympic assistant coach assignment for both Bruno and Staley. Bruno was an assistant for Auriemma and the 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team that also earned a perfect 8-0 mark and upped the USA’s Olympic gold-medal streak to five, a record for women’s tradi-tional team sports. After retiring from in-ternational play in 2004 following her third Olympic gold medal, Staley was an assistant for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team that com-piled an 8-0 record and captured the USA’s fourth-straight Olympic gold medal.

While the Rio Olympic Games will be Reeve’s first Olympic experience, she has plenty of experience coaching Olympians. Reeve won a pair of WNBA titles as a head coach with the Lynx (2011 and 2013), which featured three U.S. Olympians (Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore and Lindsay Wha-len), and two as an assistant coach with the Detroit Shock (2006 and 2008), which also

boasted a trio of Olympic champions (Swin Cash, Ruth Riley and Katie Smith) during her time.

“There is certainly a comfort level that we have,” said Auriemma. “We know a little bit about each other now and have been able to work together in the FIBA World Championship and I’m very comfortable with them and confident in them. Obviously I’ve known Doug the longest but I’ve had coaching relationships with Dawn and Cheryl too and we’ve worked really well together. The more time we spend together, the relationships are going to grow and we are going to be even more effective than they were in the World Championships.”

A total of 12 nations will compete in the Olympic women’s basket-ball competition, including host Brazil and the USA, which earned its berth by virtue of claiming the gold medal at the 2014 FIBA World Championship. The gold-medal winning nations from each of the five FIBA zone Olympic qualifying tournaments in 2015 will also punch their tickets to Rio, while the remaining berths will be awarded to the top five finishing teams at the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament (dates and site TBD).

Having earned a record seven gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal in Olympic play, USA Basketball women’s teams are 58-3 all-time in Olympic competition and will enter Rio riding a remarkable 41-game Olympic winning streak that dates to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics bronze medal game.

Since the inception of the 1995-96 USA Basketball Women’s Na-tional Team program, the USA National Team, in addition to its record five-straight Olympic gold medals, has captured four FIBA World Championship gold medals, one FIBA World Champion-ship bronze medal and one FIBA Americas Championship gold medal, while compiling a stunning 86-1 record for a .989 winning percentage in those events. Further, USA National Teams in exhi-bition contests since 1995 boast of a 186-15 record (.925 winning percentage).

Doug Bruno“The honor and privilege of representing the United States of America by coaching USA Basketball has been, and always will be, the highest coaching honor of my basketball coaching life,” said Bruno, who has piloted DePaul to a 19-6 record this season (through 2/8/15). “I would like to thank the USA Basketball Steer-ing Committee, together with Jerry Colangelo, Jim Tooley and Carol Callan of USA Basketball for their confidence in my selec-tion.“As great an honor as it is to be a member of the USA Basketball Staff, my appointment is the direct result of my lifetime honor to coach at DePaul University. Without the support of DePaul Presi-

dent Dennis Holtschneider, DePaul Athlet-ics Director Jean Lenti Ponsetto, all of my present and past DePaul assistant coaches and most importantly all of my present and former DePaul players and managers, I would never have been able to assist Coach Auriemma and the USA National Team.

“I would like to express my most sincere thanks to USA Basketball Women’s Nation-al Team head coach Geno Auriemma for his faith in my abilities to again assist with coaching ‘the greatest’ women’s basketball players in the world.

“The players who represent USA Basketball at all levels deserve the highest thanks and praise of all. Our USA women are hoop-ing it up all year, all over the world for a lot less money than our men. They never have time to breathe yet they always make time to represent their country. USA Basketball is all about the greatness of the character of our USA players.

PAN In a fast-paced game of dueling run-and-

gun offenses, including 79 3-point shots in all, the Western Conference had the better scoring touch in the pivotal fourth quarter.

The West had 35 fourth-quarter points — neither team had a higher scoring output in any of the other three periods — and defeated the Eastern Conference 105-94 in the 2014-15 bj-league All-Star Game on Sunday in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture.

With the win, the West now holds a 5-4 series lead in the bj-league All-Star Game, which was first held in January 2007 in Ginowan, Okinawa Prefecture.

Shiga Lakestars swingman Terrance Wood-bury, a University of Georgia product, led the West with 21 points and was named the game’s MVP.

“I think it’s a real honor to take (home) the MVP,” Woodbury said. “Top players gath-ered from a variety of teams, and to re-ceive this personal award makes me really happy.”

Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix for-ward Olu Ashaolu, who played college ball at the University of Oregon, had a fine all-around, MVP-caliber game. He contributed 20 points (four dunks) on 8-for-9 shooting with seven rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Other West standouts included Ryukyu Golden Kings floor leader Draelon Burns (18 points, 10 rebounds, four assists), Ryukyu’s Ryuichi Kishimoto (14 points), Kyoto Hannaryz macho forward Reggie Warren (nine points, 12 rebounds) and Osaka Evessa guard Shunki Hatakeyama (four assists, five steals)

The West shot 29-for-47 (61.7 percent) from inside the arc.

Phoenix coach Tomoya Higashino, who di-rected the West team on Sunday, described it as a pleasant, quality All-Star Game. “It was really good to get the win,” he added.

For the East, which trailed 49-45 at half-time, Iwate Big Bulls star Scootie Randall scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He received the Most Im-pressive Player award, which goes to a top performer on the losing steam.

Sendai 89ers highlight reel maestro Ke-juan Johnson followed with 15 points and Akita Northern Happinets forward Richard Roby provided 12 points, includ-ing a trio of dunks to fire up the fans, and seven rebounds. Akita’s Shigehiro Taguchi poured in 10 points and Niigata Albirex BB forward Yuichi Ikeda chipped in with nine points.

Fan favorite and reigning regular-season MVP Masashi Joho of the Toyama Grouses was held to two points, and he was 0-for-5 from 3-point range. Also for the East, reserve guard Kenya Tomori, the Gunma Crane Thunders’ lone representative in the midseason showcase game, added three points.
