Blu-ray (not Blue-ray) also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of an optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson)

The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data

The name

The blu-ray name is a combination of “blue”, for the color of the laser that is used and “ray” for optical ray.

The “e” in “blue” was purposefully left off, according to the manufacturers, because an everyday word cannot be a trademark.

3rd GENERATION:

Blu-ray disc (BD): --- 25/50 GB -Next generation optical disc format. - The plastic disc is 120 mm in diameter and

1.2 mm thick -Wavelength of laser which reads data: 405 nm -Color of laser: Blue-violet -Data transfer rate : 36 Mbps

The first Blu-ray Disc prototypes were unveiled in October 2000, and the first prototype player was released in April 2003 in Japan. Afterwards, it continued to be developed until its official release in June 2006.

BD-ROM (read only) : for reading recorded content.

BD-R (recordable) : for PC data storage.

BD-RW (rewritable) : for PC data storage.

The technology

Pits : spiral grooves that run from the centre of the disc to its edges

Bumps : other sides of these edges.

Track pitch : it is the distance between the two tracks (of pits) on the surface.

Discs store digitally encoded video and audio Information in pits , spiral grooves that run from the center of the disc to its edges .

A laser reads the other side of these pits to play the movie or program that is stored on the disc.

Other compitators The other big player is HD_DVD, also called AOD (Advanced

Optical Disc).HD-DVD BLU-RAY

• Single Layer 20GB 27GB• Double Layer 30GB 54GB Other Discs like China has introduced the Enhanced Video Disc

(EVD), Taiwan has created the Forwarded Versatile Disc(FVD).

There are also professional versions of the Blu laser technology. Sony has developed XDCAM and ProData (Professional Disc for Data).

Content protection

Blu-ray discs are better armed than current DVD’s. They come equipped with a secure encryption system– a unique ID that protects against video piracy and copyright infringement

Backward compatibility

• Though not compulsory the Blu-ray Disc Association recommends that Blu-ray Disc drives should be capable of reading standard DVDs and CDs for backward compatibility A few early Blu-ray Disc players released in 2006 could play DVDs but not CDs (the LG BH100, Pioneer BDP-HD1, and Sony BDP-S1)

• But all current Blu-ray Disc players are capable of both DVD and CD playback.

Ongoing developments Although the Blu-ray Disc specification has been finalized, engineers

continue to work on advancing the technology.• Hitachi created a 100GB disc that could be used to store 7 hours of 32

Mbit/s video (HDTV).• In August 2006,announced that they have created a working

experimental Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a single side, using six 33 GB data layers.

conclusion• It’s very likely that the technology

will be adopted as the next generation optical disc format for PC data storage and replace technologies such as CD, DVD, and HD-DVD etc.,
