Preface
Statistics on the labor force status and characteristics of the
population are compiled for the Bureau of Labor Statistics by the
Bureau of the Census in its Current Population Survey (CPS). The
CPS is a scientifically selected national sample of about 60,000
households designed to represent the civilian noninstitutional
population 16 years and over.
This bulletin is a supplement to Volume II of Labor Force
Statistics Derived from the Current Population Survey: A Databook
(Bulletin 2096), and presents revised seasonally adjusted data from
1978 through 1983. The databook, which was issued in September
1982, provides a comprehensive historical collection of national
data derived from this source through 1981. Volume II of this
publication contains monthly and quarterly seasonally adjusted data
for over 3,000 labor force series from the date of inception
through 1981.
The data contained in these volumes have been supplemented on a
more current basis by the monthly publications Employment and
Earnings and the Monthly Labor Review, available by subscription
from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing
Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.
This supplement was prepared under the direction of Gloria
Peterson Green, a supervisory labor economist in the Division of
Data Development and Users Services, Paul O. Flaim, Chief. Ronald
E. Richardson, a statistician in the Data Services Group of the
same division, performed the computer operations under the
direction of Robert J. Mclntire, Chief.

Introduction
Over the course of a year, the size of the Nations labor force,
the levels of employment and unemployment, and other measures of
labor market activity undergo sharp fluctuations due to such
seasonal events as changes in weather, reduced or expanded
production, harvests, major holidays, and the opening and closing
of schools. Because these events follow a more or less regular
pattern each year, their influence on longer term trends in the
data can be eliminated by adjusting the data from month to month.
These adjustments make it easier to observe and analyze the
cyclical and other nonseasonal movements in the series.
At the end of each calendar year, the bls reestimates the
seasonality of the employment, unemployment, and other labor force
series derived from the Current Population Survey based on the
inclusion of another full year of data in the estimation process.
Usually, data for the most recent 5 years are subject to revision.
Thus, each years data are generally subject to 5 revision cycles
before the values are considered final.
Since the publication of Labor Force Statistics Derived From the
Current Population Survey: A Databook in September 1982, all
seasonally adjusted labor force series have undergone two revision
cycles. In December 1982, data for 1978 through 1982 were revised
as a result
of the incorporation of the experience of 1982. In December
1983, data for 1979 through 1983 were revised as a result of the
inclusion of the 1983 experience. Seasonally adjusted data for 1978
and earlier years are no longer subject to revision.
This supplement provides revised seasonally adjusted monthly and
quarterly data from 1978 through 1983 for most of the labor force
series that are currently seasonally adjusted. The inclusion of the
resident Armed Forces in the labor force and employment totals,
effective with the publication of data for January 1983, resulted
in the creation of several new series. These series are provided
from the date of inception.
Thus, this supplement plus Volume II of the databook provides a
complete historical record of all seasonally adjusted labor force
series. Inquiries concerning these series as well as the seasonal
adjustment methodology utilized should be addressed to Robert J.
Mclntire, Chief, Data Services Group, Bureau of Labor Statistics,
Washington, D.C. 20212.
The concepts, definitions, and estimating methods used in the
survey, as well as indications of the reliability of the data are
described in detail in Bulletin 2096, and in the Explanatory Notes
of the bls monthly publication, Employment and Earnings.
