Welcome to Bloomsbury Reference

Welcome to the new Reference information pack, bringing you details of Bloomsbury’s major reference

works and digital libraries. Bloomsbury is a leading international academic publisher, unconstrained by the

conflicting interests of conglomerate ownership or a single academic institution. We are based in London,

New Delhi, New York and Sydney.

Within our Academic division, we publish under a number of prestigious and historic imprint names, as well

as under Bloomsbury. These include T&T Clark, Methuen Drama and Arden Shakespeare. With effect from

1st September 2012, all new Continuum titles will be published under the Bloomsbury brand. The same

applies to all Berg and Bristol Classical Press titles, as of 1st January 2013. This will make it easier for you to

find our quality reference publishing, rather than navigating across a number of imprints.

Publishing in Print and Digital

Bloomsbury Academic now publishes around 1,100 titles each year, with a particularly big presence in the

Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. Along with a varied major

reference work programme, we are leading the way in digital publishing, for example, with our award-winning

Berg Fashion Library. In autumn 2012 we launched the Churchill Archive, which made over 800,000 pages

of key historical documents from the twentieth century available online for the first time. In Spring 2013 we

will launch Drama Online, the ultimate online resource for plays, critical analysis and performance,

developed in partnership with Faber and Faber.

We hope you enjoy reading this information pack and exploring our new global Bloomsbury website

www.bloomsbury.com which brings together all of these products and more.

Food History Critical and Primary Sources

Edited by Jeffrey M. Pilcher

Food History: Critical and Primary Sources is an indispensable four-volume reference collection which focuses on the widest possible span of food in human history, to provide a comprehensive survey of problems and methods in the field of food history. Bringing together over 80 high-quality essays drawn from journal articles, book chapters, excerpts and historical documents and supported by introductory essays and a wealth of contextual material, this important new reference work combines contemporary scholarship with selected primary sources allowing scholars to use this as a starting point for their own historical research.

The volumes are divided chronologically, moving from human evolution and the origins of complex societies to the agrarian and pastoral societies of the classical and postclassical eras, to the age of global contact and early industrialisation, to the transition to industrial diets in the contemporary era. Each volume is introduced by an essay from the editor and is divided into broad thematic categories and offers a range of methodological approaches, multidisciplinary appeal and broad geographical coverage, highlighting how the field has developed over time and investigating how and why food is different at different points in world history.

This will be an essential addition to libraries and a major scholarly resource for researchers involved in the study of food in world history.

Encyclopedia of the American EnlightenmentEdited by Mark G. Spencer The Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment is the first reference work on this key subject in early American history, providing a comprehensive account to complement the intense scholarly activity that has recently centered on the European Enlightenment.

Wide-ranging in scope, the collection offers a fresh definition of the Enlightenment in America, including:

- Over 500 original essays on key American Enlightenment figures, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Jonathen Edwards and many others

- Many topical essays and entries on dozens of often-overlooked secondary figures

This remarkable work shows that the American Enlightenment is much further reaching than previously supposed; indeed it constitutes the central framework for understanding the development of American history between c. 1740 and c. 1820.

Dictionary of Early American PhilosophersEdited by John R. Shook, Center for Inquiry, Amherst, USA

This two volume set contains over 400 entries by nearly 300 authors, providing an account of philosophical thought in the United States and Canada between 1600 and 1860. The label of ‘philosopher’ has been broadly applied in this Dictionary to intellectuals who have made philosophical contributions regardless of academic career or professional title. Each entry begins with biographical and career information, followed by a discussion of the subject’s writings, teaching, and thought. Entries are cross-reference and a concluding bibliography lists significant publications by the subject, posthumous editions and collected works, and further reading about the subject.

The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of UtilitarianismEdited by James E. Crimmins

The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Utilitarianism captures the complex history and multifaceted character of utilitarianism in its various contexts and forms more completely than any previous source.

The volume’s broad mandate includes entries on the authors and texts that contributed to the development of the tradition of utilitarian thinking from antiquity to the present, as well as on the issues and critics that have arisen at every stage in the history of that tradition. In addition, the reader will discover ample evidence of the capacity of the theory to generate new ideas, issues and approaches, and to foment dialogue across an expansive and eclectic intellectual spectrum, embracing the history of ideas, moral, legal, analytic and political philosophy, economics, religion, psychology, and other fields of study.

Academics and researchers in search of fresh juxtapositions of issues and arguments will welcome this unique reference work.

Edited by François Jaran and Christophe Perrin

The Heidegger Concordance represents the first index of Martin Heidegger’s Collected Works [Gesamtausgabe]. This three-volume work offers a comprehensive list of the most relevant concepts in Heidegger’s writings and their corresponding occurrences in all published volumes of the Gesamtausgabe. As an essential reference tool for anyone working in Heidegger studies today, the Concordance will help students and scholars navigate their way through the almost 30,000 pages of Heidegger’s published writings.

Including a German Index of more than 7,000 entries, as well as Greek, Latin and Proper Name indicies, The Heidegger Concordance constitutes a hugely important research tool and one of the most significant contributions to Heidegger Studies in recent years.

Edited by Elinor Shaffer, School of Advanced Study, University of London, UK

Each volume in this series examines the ways authors have been translated, published, distributed, read, reviewed and discussed in Europe. The texts throw light not only on the specific strands of intellectual and cultural history, but also on the processes involved in the dissemination of ideas and texts.

The Reception of Charles Dickens in EuropeEdited by Michael Hollington, University of Toulouse-Le Mirail, France

These two volumes fill a major gap in Dickens scholarship, which has by and large neglected Dickens’s fortunes in Europe and his impact on major European authors and movements. Essays give full attention to cultural changes and fashions, such as the decline of Dickens’s fortunes at the end of the nineteenth century in the period of Naturalism and Aestheticism, and the subsequent upswing in the period of Modernism, in part as a consequence of the rise of film in the era of Chaplin and Eisenstein. It also offers accounts of Dickens’s reception in periods of political upheaval and revolution such as during the communist era in Eastern Europe or under fascism in Germany and Italy in particular.

The Literary and Cultural Reception of Charles Darwin in EuropeEdited by Thomas F. Glick, Boston University, USA and Elinor Shaffer, University of London, UK

Beyond his pivotal place in the history of scientific thought, Charles Darwin’s writings and his theory of evolution by natural selection have also had a profound impact on art and culture and continue to do so to this day. The Literary and Cultural Reception of Charles Darwin in Europe is a comprehensive survey of this enduring cultural impact throughout the continent.

The Reception of Robert Burns in EuropeEdited by Murray Pittock, University of Glasgow, UK

Marginalised in Anglophone literary criticism since 1945, this volume recognises the rapid reversal in this trend for an author who was of key importance in the vernacular politics of central and eastern Europe in the nineteenth century. It focuses in particular on the countries which are central to Burns’s European reception, devoting more than one chapter to the most important. It also includes essays on the broader cultural reception of Burns, principally Burns in public commemoration and celebration and Burns in European music. These themed chapters are key to the wide and deep nature of Burns’s impact on European culture.

The Reception of Isaac Newton in EuropeEdited by Scott Mandelbrote, University of Cambridge, UK and Helmut Pulte, Ruhr University, Germany

The essays in this three-volume set consider the impact of Newton’s ideas from three distinct but interlocking perspectives: their reception in particular geographical areas and language communities; their importance for particular fields of intellectual and practical endeavour; and their influence on other thinkers who, in turn, shaped Newton’s intellectual legacy. They provide, for the first time, a picture of the fate of Newton’s work across mainland Europe, giving an account of Newton’s influence in the arts and social sciences, as well as in mathematics or physics.
