Who are qualified to donate?

AGE : 16– 65 years old (<18 with written parental consent)

BLOOD PRESSURE : 90/60 - 140/90WEIGHT : at least 50 kgs. HEMOGLOBIN : 125 g/L

Giving of blood is a privilege. Only healthy donors can give. She/ he can give every three (3) months. Share your blood now and help save lives!

MECHANICS ON BLOOD DONATION

1.Donor screening and selection.

What to do after donating blood?

1. Rest for about 5 to 10 minutes.

2. Drink plenty of water.3. Apply pressure on the punctured site if necessary.

4. Avoid strenuous activities.

at most 4 times a year / 3 months after every donation)

*** After a short rest and some snacks, you will be able to resume your normal activities.

2. “But I’m scared of getting HIV/AIDS!”

*** You do not get HIV by donating blood, only sterile disposable needles and syringes are used.

3. “I need beer and balot in order to

recover” *** Just increase your water intake, it is enough for you to recover. No need for special foods.

4. “The trait of the blood donor will be transferred to the

patient” *** It is not the blood but by genes that traits are transferred from one person to another.

1. Nobody has ever asked me to donate. *** Consider yourself invited.

EXCUSES

2. You don’t need my donation, I’m just a common type “O”. *** Of course we do!, we are constantly in need of all blood types.

“ O ” = 44% “ B ” = 26% “ A ” = 24% “ AB ” = 6%

3. But I’ve just recovered from an illness. *** The Blood Bank physician will determine whether you are fit to donate or not.

EXCUSES

5. I’ve had hepatitis. *** If your blood is tested negative one year after you recover from Hepatitis A, then you are acceptable as a blood donor.

4. I’m anemic. *** The Blood Bank tests for anemia before donation.

7. I’m too small. *** Not if you weigh 50

kilograms or more.

EXCUSES6. I’m too old. *** The Blood Bank physician will

determine whether you are fit to donate or not.

8. I hate needles. *** You’ll hardly feel it, it will just

sting a bit.9. I’m too busy, it’s too inconvenient. *** Donating blood only takes an average of 30 minutes.

• Tasked with collection of blood from voluntary donors and the provision of safe blood, to the population of Region 7.

REGION VII BLOOD CENTER (RBC)

• Started in 1998.

• Located at DOH compound, Osmena Ave., Cebu City.

• Other functions include the preparation and distribution of blood components for hospitals within the region, research, and advocacy.
