CHILD EDUCATION AND EIDI PROGRAM (CEEP)-2013STUDENT CHAPTER-(SMC) ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Introduction:Sindh Medical University Alumni Association’s Student Chapter has been organizing Child Education Eidi program for consecutive 3 years and it wishes to continue for upcoming years also.

History of Child Educaion and Eidi program:In the beginning, this event was organized at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) by 2 to 3 people at personal level. House jobbers of SMC used to contribute part of their salaries; whereas final year students purchase the items. After graduation of these seniors, there was no one to continue this project.Student Chapter took this milestone in their hand by giving it’san official name and initiating one of its three elementary projects alongside Epoch-(the magazine) and the Annual SMC Health Awareness Program. In year 2011, we added the education constituent to it because only going out and distributing gifts wasn't really evocative.

CEEP-2013:CEEP-2013 was held on 6th-August-2013 by Sindh Medical University Alumni Association’s Students Chapter. Students from every batch took part in volunteering for this campaign. Volunteers performed a great jobwith high ambitions and humanistic spirit in this holistic campaign whose primary objective was to bring smiles on a children faces, who were far from their families orwere in poor health conditions. Majority of the children admitted in NICH were belonging to poor families and hence sense of education among themwas very low. Education must be the first priority; it is a path that children follow to reach their full destination. SMCian’s joined hands with the team of Student Chapter to enlighten significance of education, well-being and hygiene among children and to make their EID enjoyable with several Eid gifts.

This program has three major phases i.e.

Initial Phase:After recruiting volunteers from every batch, we made some focals to coordinate with volunteers. All volunteers were asked to donate as much as they can. Our volunteers were very much passionate and were ready to help in any way. Around 85 students registered themselves for CEEP.

Packing:Packing, the second phase, started after collecting donations. Finance department of Student Chapter successfully completed “Marketplace and JPMC donation collection drive”. Truly speaking, Packing was an interesting and entertaining work. We got an amazing feeling while packing little toys, pencil boxes, eatables and reading books. Unluckily, majority of the students had exams in those days but still they impart time from their busy schedules and worked on the day of packing.

Distribution:The most important and special phase of Child Education and Eidi Campaign was Distribution. Students of each batch were interested to come and visit selected places for distribution of Eid gifts. Our team prepared a wonderful presentation for children on ‘Personal Hygiene’ with thought-provoking comics that include hand washing techniques, methods to clean ear, skin protection and much more. Due to the climate of city and pollution, it was a best way to make children aware about health hazards and the ways of protecting body from several communicating infectious diseases. Team of Volunteers and focals was made for selected places. We targeted four places:

We also allowed outsiders to join hands with us for this noble cause. Many students and even a family supported us in every step. This showed that the passion for humanity, enthusiasm and dedication is still present in our society to help the needy ones. We were glad to see the interest of very young students studying in class 8 th

and 9th. On the day of campaign, all volunteers were guided about places and rules while distributing gift hampers. Games and educational presentations were finalized. As this whole event was authorized by the Vice Chancellor of Sind Medical University, student-points (conveyance) were indented to visit all four places.

Now the journey starts…. Excitement of volunteers was at the peak. An awaited day to meet orphans and children admitted in NICH. Point-bus for NICH and Edhi Home left the Jinnah Sind Medical University early morning.

NICH is a well-developed institute for Children’s Health. It is based upon six floors. Three of our reliable volunteers, Maliha Bint-e-Arif, Saba Badar and SeemaSalahuddin went to NICH few days before the visit day for taking a survey to record statistical analysis and estimate of children and beds in the hospital. On 6th floor, there were only infants so we skip that as our gifts were for the children ranging age from age 10 to 14.FlOOR TOTAL BEDS GIRLS BOYS1st floor 23 9 112nd floor 35 6 113rd floor 45 16 244th floor 75 20 275th floor 50 6 20

Volunteers tried to make the children happy by distributing gifts to them. Their parents were also pleased to see efforts done by the students. Attendees and patients were too much depressed due to illness. Deep sign of sadness and dejection were embraced on their faces; in such a situation this step led them to profound exhilaration of joy whichremoved all stress for a while and brought a wave of smile on their faces and happiness among them. Students talked to children about their health, Eid, education and also instructed them how to use the educational material being given to them. Everyone loved to get Eidi and happiness could be seen in the faces of these children, some were shy while some were energetic. Volunteers made mehndi designs and did face painting too.

(Sumaiya Noor)Had an awesome day at NICH. A wonderful Campaign thanks to SMC Alumni. That was the most interesting camp and especial thanks to Mariam Asif, Sarosh Zafar, AmrataKumari very Well- managed by you guys. Although it’s not a medical camp but still we felt like a doctor for the first time. In my opinion this campaign should be held every month rather than every year”

Volunteer:”I wanted to do this for so long. It was a humbling experience that we have so much in our lives to be thankful for and it gives inner satisfaction to help others and bring smiles on their faces. Thanks for providing all of us with this opportunity and best of luck for future plans like

Edhi Home: Our volunteers visited Edhi Home located at Korangi side. The most fascinating and heart touching moment could have been seen as soon as a person arrives at Edhi Foundation and there is a statement written on the upper side of a cradle, that says in urdu,

‘Qatalna Karen – jhooleymen dalen” Translatio: (do not kill (a kid) – but drop in swing)

As a matter of fact, that orphans and poor kids nurtures in Eidhi home, majority of our volunteers wished to go Edhi Home, that’s why maximum strength of students were sent there. Children of this foundation were trained very well and well mannered. Volunteers were successful in bringing smile to the faces of these youngsters by doing face painting and using mehndi. Face painting was anenjoyable and entertaining activity. Students recited National Anthem as guided by volunteers.

Had so much fun today at Eidhi Center. Giving away gift packs to the needy children and the feeling you get when you spread smile on their innocent faces by spending time with them n making them forget their sorrows for at least few minutes is undefinable

Sirat-ul-Jannah:

I (Dr. Mariam), Sarosh Zafar- the project supervisor and our team of volunteers visited Sirat-ul-Jannah. We faced several problems to reach there as it was located in the streets where transport could not reached easily. Moin Ashraf, (of 2015-batch) helped us a lot in finding the location as he was the only man (better to replace man by guy or male) with us.

We observed that children of sirat-ul-Jannah were more active as compared to the children of Edhi Home. However the talent was everywhere. Some kids were naturally gifted with beautiful (bewitching) voice. We played many games with them which reminded us of our childhood. After sometime, Sarosh Zafar delievereda presentation on ‘Personal Hygiene and Some Codes of Islam’. It was an interactive session and we were glad to see the knowledge of youngsters.

Besides learning, we also celebrated the charm of Eid by using mehndi. The most interesting but strange experience of mine at Sirat-ul-Jannah was that boys were more interested in Mehndi designs as compared to girls, but in order to maintain the difference I wrote the name of that child on his hand with the Cone as shown below.

Children were much thrilled at the time of Gifts distribution. Both students/volunteers and children enjoyed a lot and had a memorable time.

Sehar Welfare Society:

Sehar Welfare Society deals with the education of poor children. Team of boys went there to distribute gifts including educational items as there were less number of kids than other places.

Statistical Analysis of CEEP-2013 SUCCESS:

Visitors were asked to fill Post Campaign survey form to evaluate the results of campaign. Five options were given to rate the overall campaign “Child Education and Eidi Program"I am delighted that most of the volunteers rated the campaign "Excellent". The Bar chart has been created by using SPSS.

Conclusion:

This was not just a campaign, but also a moment of sharing happiness and joy. We, usually celebrate Eid with our families, friends and our beloved ones but we should also remember those children who don’t have family, who don’t have siblings to talk or play with them. They live with those who are also like them but still missing a family.

Student Chapter of SMC Alumni Association organizes every year in Ramadan ‘Child Education and Eidi Campaign” to show the orphans that they are not alone and they can conquer this world through education and awareness.

At last, this great journey reaches to its end, but CEEP is not ended, it will be celebrated every year, and this journey will be continued in future too, if our strength, passion and sense for humanity lives long. We conclude our journey with this quote: ‘miles to go, before we sleep’.

“Love is not patronizing and charity isn't about pity, it is about love. Charity and love are the same -- with charity you give love, so don't just give money but reach out your hand instead.”(Mother Teresa)

In the end I would like to acknowledge some names of my team members without whom true moral support this all journey couldn’t come true.
