The Misery of Constipation

You’re blocked and bloated, laxatives are notworking and your doctor has been no help atall. If you’re carrying around several daysstagnant, fermenting waste you totally have mysympathy. It’s no fun at all.

Belly ache, feeling full, irritable, lethargic, fullof trapped gas, furry tongue: they all add to themisery.

It’s in the past for me but the memories areetched in my mind. The days I had to stay offwork clutching a hot water bottle to my swollenbelly, missing events I had been lookingforward to, snapping at people like a crocodileat feeding time and zero ability to concentrate? All because I desperately needed a poo.

Physical discomfort is not the only issue. Chronic constipation has long termnegative effects on our health. When we can’t poo, toxic waste is reabsorbed puttingincreased demands on our liver, causing skin break-outs, feeling tired, run down, andcreating the perfect environment for more gut disorders in the future.

What is Constipated?

My definition of constipation comes from anaturopathic point of view. If you eat threedecent meals a day, you should beemptying your bowels two to three times aday. If you are going once a day or lessthen, strictly speaking, you are constipated.I hear the sharp intake of breath!

Imagine what inside your house would belike if you only flushed the loo every threedays!

For the purposes of this guide we are concentrating on an acute issue. You need apoo and you need it now (or at least as soon as possible).

The Constipation Solutions

Now Lets get back to the point here. You need relief from your current situation.Laxatives don’t work for a lot of people and can make the problem worse in the longterm so we are going to look at three approaches you can use at home:

Water FlushTakes the least time to complete the process but you will need to buy an enema kit (link provided in that section). Simple, quick and very effective.

Vitamin C FlushWill take two to three hours to complete and you will need to buy ascorbic acid. Not only will this flush clear your gut, it will also tell you how much vitamin C your body needs on a daily basis.

Salt Water FlushWill take two to three hours to complete and most people will have what they need in their kitchen cupboard and, if not, the local supermarket. The cheapest option (although none are expensive) and it will also clear intestinal parasites ifyou have them!

Constipation Solution 1

Water Flush (AKA Enema)

Water flushing is a strategy used to relieve chronic constipation. Water is introducedinto the colon, held, then allowed to leave. The process softens faecal matter, cleanses and removes the toxins that build up when stagnant waste has been held forsome time. It is without doubt the quickest and most efficient method of gettingimmediate relief from constipation.

My client’s are often squeamish about doing a Water Flush at home and I admit, when I first experimented, I was a little nervous. But it’s so easy once you get thehang of it, it’s definitely worth the effort.

With an enema kit at home you will never be more than 15 minutes away fromgetting at least some relief and as your skill and confidence grow so will your results.

A Water Flush Is Not Suitable For:

Pregnant women People with severe piles and rectal ulcers People with an obstructed intestine Severely weak or malnourished people People with a heart condition or diabetes

Sourcing The Kit

The kit I use myself can be bought here: https://www.shopholistic.c om/enema-kit-bag-2-litre? tracking=5b2bbfcc8420f

It is very robust, easy to use and will last you for years if you lookafter it well. I have been using mine for around ten years and it’sgot plenty of life left in it yet. Last time I checked this model was£17.50 and they do next day delivery.

If, like me, you have trouble going to the loo when you goon holiday or away for a weekend, you might also like to getone of these kits which are smaller, boxed and easy to pack. They cost £13.00: https://www.detoxonline.co.uk/index.php/enemas-home_enema_kit/?k=1327:25::

Page 6

Page 7: Blocked & Bloated?

Top Tip: If you want to take either kit away with you then I recommend getting acouple of different hooks so that you can use it anywhere. I generally take a doubleended metal hook and some Command Strips (from supermarkets and DIY stores –check the weight they will hold, water is heavy stuff – 2 litres of water weighs 2kg)with hooks. You can then either hang the bag over a shower screen or stick it to tilesor a wall. The Command strips will not damage paintwork.

Water Flush Instructions

● Use pure filtered water so you don’t introduce chlorine to your gut (trust me, itwon’t like it). If you don’t have a filter then use bottled water. Boil the waterand allow it to cool (or add cool water until you get the right temperature). Itneeds to be around 40 degrees celsius.

Top Tip: Test the temperature with your tongue: it’s way more sensitive than yourfingers. If the temperature is comfortable on your tongue it will be perfect for yourgut.

● Ideally, do your flush first thing in the morning before you have eaten (but inan “emergency” it will work at other times).

● You will need either Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, olive oil or some KY Jelly touse as a lubricant to insert the nozzle.

● Attach the nozzle to the end of the hose, close the clamp and fix the hose toyour enema. Fill the bag with water.

● You need the bag to be a couple of feet above your head (when sitting if youare using the loo method). Hang the bag, open the clamp, with the hose overthe loo, and let out a little water to release air bubbles. Once the bubbles havebeen released, close the clamp.

● If this is your first time doing a water flush then keep it simple. There are lotsof positions you can get into to move water around your colon but for your firsttry, just sit on the loo.

● Lubricate the nozzle and gently insert into your rectum. There should be noresistance. If there is, then you need to shift the angle. Do not push it where itdoes not want to go!

Page 7

Page 8: Blocked & Bloated?

● Once the nozzle is in place, open the clamp so that the water starts to flow.

● If you get cramps, stop the water flow and have a rest whilst retaining thewater, then start the flow again. Aim to allow as much of the water into yourcolon as you can.

● Once all the water is in your colon (or as much as you can take), relax for 5 to15 minutes. The longer you can hold the water the better the flush. If you feelthe urge to push, breathe deeply and try to hang on. There are no prizes (otherthan a good poo) so just do your best.

● Then Let it Go!

● It is a very satisfying feeling when the water gushes back out, bringing with itthe stubborn poo. You may get several waves of evacuations so wait for a fewminutes before repeating the process (if you still feel the need) or moving awayfrom the loo. Massage your tummy in a clockwise direction to encourageperistalsis in your colon.

Issues You May Experience During a Water Flush

1. Abdominal Discomfort. If you experience cramps then stop the water or slowthe flow. Press over the area with the palm of your hand and work in an anti-clockwise direction. Once the discomfort passes, restart the flow of water.

2. Water Squirts Back Out. If water starts to come back out, turn off the flow, remove the nozzle and see if you can hold the water in. If not, pass the water andstart again.

Top Tip: Prepare more water than you need before you begin in case this happens.

3. Water Does Not Flow. Try adjusting the nozzle by pulling it back out slightly. You may have the speculum against soft tissue (or even poo). Try a slightly differentangle. Also check there are no kinks in the hose. If this does not work, remove thenozzle and check the water is running freely. Air bubbles can often stop the watercoming out. Re-insert and try again.

Top Tip: You will know when the water is running freely because you will be able tofeel yourself filling up and see the bag emptying.

Page 8

Page 9: Blocked & Bloated?

4. Urge to Expel or Cramping Without Taking In Enough Water. Focus on yourbreath and breathe slowly from your diaphragm. The sensation will pass. If not, let itgo and repeat the process. You’ll get there, I promise you.

Water Flush Frequency

You can use a water flush once or twice a week. It is however a short-term solutionfor gaining relief from constipation. It would make sense to work towards identifyingthe root causes of dysfunction in your body and taking steps to eliminate each issue. You really don’t need to put up with permanent discomfort and settle for a life ofchronic constipation.

Vitamin C Flush

A Vitamin C Flush will not only clear your backlog, itwill give you a great detox and indicate your dailyoptimum dosage for vitamin C (trust me, it’s more thanyou think).

Unlike other animals, human beings are not able toproduce or store vitamin C. For our purposes, thisinability to store the nutrient is very useful. Once yourbody has reached optimum levels of vitamin C, anyexcess will be flushed from your body as waterydiarrhoea. The ultimate natural laxative: totallyharmless and can only do you good.

If you have low grade infections anywhere in your body (I’m thinking gum disease, root canal fillings as well as other possibilities) your body may well have a very highneed for vitamin C to fight the infections/bacteria.

As you would probably expect, I eat a healthy diet packed with vegetables, good fats, quality protein and small amounts of low carb fruit. My diet is nutrient dense and Itake supplements to fill any gaps. I also have a mouth full of crowns and several rootcanal fillings. I was shocked however that it took 25,000 mg to get the full flusheffect so don’t be surprised if you need a lot of vitamin C. And remember, there is noknown toxic level of vitamin C so this flush can only do you good (as well as gettingrid of all that festering poo).

A Vitamin C Flush Is Not Suitable For:

Pregnant Women People with piles (haemorrhoids) People with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohns and Colitis People with diverticular disease when it is in it’s inflamed state

You Will Need

A tub of ascorbic acid powder. Remember I used 25,000 mg which is ofcourse 25g.

An alarm clock or timer. A couple of litres of filtered or bottled water.

Where to Source Ascorbic Acid

Lots of people recommend using buffered Ascorbic Acid to do a Vitamin C Flush. Ifyou have a sensitive digestive tract it might be a good idea. You can buy bufferedAscorbic Acid from Thorne Research on Amazon. £2.36 per ounce (28.34 grams)

I used unbuffered ascorbic acid. It can be a bit harsh on the GI tractand lead to nausea for some people but I was fine with it. I used abudget option from Bulk Powders. £4.79 per 100g

If you want it right now, then Holland & Barratt sell 567g ofAscorbic Acid Powder for £26.99.

Vitamin C Flush Instructions

Important: If you use the contraceptive pill, or any other medication, don’t take itbefore you do the flush. Wait until you have finished flushing or take the medicationat least two hours before you start the flush.

● Best time to do the flush is first thing in the morning when you get up, beforeyou eat anything. Allow plenty of time to complete the flush. Your firstattempt is likely to take longer than subsequent flushes.

● If it is your first time then allow the whole day to complete the flush (althoughyou will probably be finished much sooner, but just in case). Most people willsaturate their mineral ascorbate needs within a few hours. Sometimes the needis much greater and occasionally it may take a number of hours to complete theinitial calibration.

Top Tip: Increasing your hydration status prior to the flush will make it work betterand prevent your body from absorbing too much water, too quickly, which can causeheadaches. If you are always dehydrated then start drinking water the day before anddrink small amounts at regular intervals throughout the day.

● Dissolve each teaspoon (3 grams) of vitamin C powder powder in 1/2 cup ofwarm water (ideally room temperature which is best for absorption). So, for

Page 11

Page 12: Blocked & Bloated?

example, if you take 6g of mineral ascorbate powder, you will need to dissolveit in 1 cup of liquid.

● Make sure all the powder is dissolved and drink the lot straight away

● Keep an accurate record of each dose and the time. The amount of ascorbatepowder required will depend on how quickly your body uses it up.

Guidelines for Dosage

● Given you are reading this guide, I am working on the basis you are veryconstipated. I suggest therefore starting with 2 teaspoons (6g) dissolved in onecup of water every 15 minutes. 6 grams is the maximum you should take ineach dose. I started on 6 grams and maintained that dose throughout.

● Continue taking the dose every 15 minutes (use a timer) until you achieve avery watery stool or an enema-like evacuation of liquid from your bottom.Ideally, it should be like squirting out a cup of water. You will most likelyexperience grumbling and movement from your gut before you reach yourgoal. Keep going, it’s a good sign.

Top Tip: Do not stop at a watery stool. The aim is to energise the body to flush outtoxins and reduce the risk that they may be reabsorbed. Once you achieve the waterspout do not take any more mineral ascorbate that day.

Issues You May Encounter During a Vitamin C Flush

● If you experience gas or a feeling of fullness during the flush it is likely thatyou are using too little water to dissolve the powder or are rushing theprocedure.

● Experiencing cramps is also most likely caused by too little water as isbecoming very thirsty.

● Nausea - usually caused by using unbuffered ascorbic acid. Also, when youstart getting close to your flush point you will have had a lot of water and thiscan produce nausea. If this happens, slow down and take small sips but makesure you keep your timer set to every 15 minutes. Avoid moving around andbending over.

Page 12

Page 13: Blocked & Bloated?

● Taste - I don’t mind the taste of ascorbic acid at all. If you are not good attaking things then definitely find something suitable to take it with. Choosesomething with minimal sugar. I have not tested these suggestions (yet) butyou could try diluted coconut water, adding some lemon, lime or grapefruitjuice or juice some blueberries and add a dash to each dose.

● Bloating and Loose Stools After The Flush – Some people may remainbloated for the rest of the day after a calibration. You may also experienceloose stools for a day or so after which is nothing to worry about.

● Bottom Burning – Some people have reported experiencing “hot” stools thatburn their bottom after several evacuations. It would be useful to havesomething to hand if this happens to you. A soothing ointment designed totreat piles (soothing not shrinking), pure aloe vera (not in a cream with otheringredients). Using glycerine suppositories may help to ease the passage of alarge volume of poop.

Repeat of the Vitamin C Flush

If you want to use this flush as an emergency evacuation, it’s safe to do wheneverthere is a need (assuming the need is not more than once a week). My intention is foryou to get swift relief from being blocked and bloated. It is important to explore thereasons for your constipation and take steps to improve bowel health and function.

If you supplement with Ascorbic acid on a daily basis, at the recommended level (seenext paragraph), you should not need to do the flush again as you will be takingvitamin C at the optimum level for you and as your need decreases you will get aslight flush effect from the excess. If you get blocked up again then you can use the CFlush once a week for 3 – 6 months.

Your Optimum Vitamin C Daily Dose

Once you have done your flush (and given the effort and time you have put in) itmakes sense to continue taking vitamin C at the level your body needs. Take 75% ofthe amount that was needed to induce the flush, daily.

So, for example, I needed 25,000 mg to flush. My optimum daily intake of ascorbicacid is therefore around 20g (that’s a lot, way more than any RDA you will ever see,but the need will reduce over time). I therefore needed to take, initially, 4 doses of5g (Damn those root canals).

You may take it in powder or capsule form, divided into doses throughout the day(taking no more than 6g in each dose). A person who is generally healthy would

Page 13

Page 14: Blocked & Bloated?

probably need 2-10 grams per day. If you are taking 8 grams, for example, you couldtake 3 grams with breakfast and lunch and 2 grams with dinner. If you are taking 15grams, you could take 3 grams upon arising, at each meal and before bed. For largeramounts, take your C in more frequent doses.

As you get healthier, your requirement for vitamin C will reduce. Once your bowelsstart to get loose, reduce the dose by several grams per day until the looseness stopsand maintain at that level until looseness restarts and then reduce the dose again.

Top Tip: If you wish to or must stop vitamin C for any reason, it is important to tapergradually. Sudden cessation of C does not allow the body time to accommodate to thechange, and the body will continue to metabolize and excrete large amounts. Youmust reduce your vitamin C level by several grams per day over a sufficient period oftime to prevent this from occurring.

Constipation Solution 3

Saltwater Flush

When I was less informed about natural approaches tohealth, I thought a salt water flush sounded dangerous.Doesn’t drinking salt water make you lose your mind? Youmight be thinking that now but a salt water flush is asimple, safe and effective way to detox and empty yourcolon from the comfort of your own home? It’s true. Bydrinking high quality salt dissolved in water, you can pushwaste through your body, release toxins and clean out thatpesky blockage.

Sounds a bit crazy? This method of colon and stomach cleansing has been used foraeons, it’s a big part of traditional yogic practices, and it’s a lot safer (and moreeffective) than commercial laxatives.

Salt has received some bad press over the last decade or so but it is actually essential for many biochemical processes, including (but not limited to):

Adrenal/thyroid gland function

Ensuring stability of cell walls

Page 14

Page 15: Blocked & Bloated?

Muscle contractions

Absorption of nutrients

Stimulation of nerves

Maintaining the correct pH in your body

Water balance regulation.

As an added bonus, a salt water flush is great for clearing intestinal parasites!Salt can also help eliminate fluid retention. Authentic sea salt (or Himalayan Pink Salt) contains all 84 trace minerals (whereas table salt has been stripped of minerals) helps you lose extra fluid weight by properly balancing out electrolyte/mineral levels in the body, releasing retained water from your cells.

It’s necessary and natural to have some real salt in your diet, so there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to drinking some salt. Of course, if you did nothing but drink salt water, you would become extremely dehydrated. In fact, you would die because your kidneys and bladder would cause you to lose more water than you’re taking in.

Who Is Not Suitable for A Saltwater Flush

Pregnant women People with piles (haemorrhoids) People with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohns and Colitis People with diverticular disease when it is in it’s inflamed state

People with uncontrolled high blood pressure

It’s possible that salt water flush can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting or weakness in some people. If you have a history of serious digestive issues or high blood pressure, you might want to talk to your doctor before doing a salt water flush (not because real salt will raise blood pressure on its own, but just to be on the safe side).

Salt Water Flush Instructions

It’s best to do a salt water flush first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. It’s best to pick a day when you can stay at home at least for the morning. You may need to use the loo several times and the whole process is likely to take 1 to 2 hours (but it may be longer for some people).

Page 15

Page 16: Blocked & Bloated?

You Need

● 2 teaspoons of high quality sea salt or genuine Himalayan pink salt● Large glass jar with a lid● 1 litre of hot fltered water (use bottled water if you don’t have a flter –

preferably in a glass bottle)● 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon or lime juice

Top Tip: It is very important when doing a salt flush, you use hot water (to dissolve the salt) and real sea salt (or genuine Himalayan pink salt). The salt must be totally dissolved in the water so you can absorb the minerals from the salt. When properly prepared you won’t see any granules of salt, just cloudy water. If you don’t fully dissolve the salt you can end up with high amounts of salt in your bloodstream which is not good.

Boil the water and let it cool. Test the temperature with your tongue. If it’s just warm to the tip of your tongue it will be fine for your colon.

● Put the salt, lemon/lime juice and water in the jar, screw the lid on and shake vigorously until the salt is completely dissolved. There should be no salt grainsvisible at all.

● Drink the salt/lemon water quickly (I can’t imagine anyone wanting to drink it slowly). You need to have drunk it all within 5 minutes.

● Lie down on your side and massage your belly on the opposite side, then change sides and massage the other side.

● Shortly after finishing the mixture you should start to feel the urge to go to the bathroom. Do your best to hold in the solution for about 30 minutes to allow your body to fully absorb the salt. Just do your best. There are no prizes (otherthan getting rid of the backed up poo).

● When you can no longer hold on, get on the loo. Don’t worry if you can’t holdit as long as desired. Our goal here is to relieve your constipation. You might go more than once, and some people will need to use the loo for several hours before your colon is empty so don’t be in a hurry to leave the house.

Page 16

Page 17: Blocked & Bloated?

How Often Can You Use This Method

Personally, I think once a month is enough. Occasionally doing a salt flush can be a safe and therapeutic way to cleanse your system, but doing it too often will result in problems balancing electrolytes and side effects that can be dangerous (dehydration, dizziness, blood pressure changes, muscle weakness, fatigue, etc). In addition, going forward it’s important to identify the underlying causes of your constipation.

Issues You May Encounter During a Salt Water Flush

If you followed the instructions and it did not work for you there are a couple of possibilities:

Double check that you used pure sea salt (not iodised). Iodised salt will not absorb in the same way and may not get the result you are looking for.

If you didn’t do your flush first thing in the morning then next time aim to startat 7am and make sure you have not eaten since the day before.

You will only get short-term relief unless you are able to identify the route cause of your issue

Page 17

Page 18: Blocked & Bloated?

What Next?

There are many causes of chronic constipation such as food intolerances, coeliac disease, weak digestion, dehydration, inadequate diet, chronic mental or emotional stress and overgrowths of bad bacteria in your gut to name just a few.

If you have found this guide useful (or even if you haven’t) but you want to get to thebottom of your constipation (or any other digestive issue) then take the first step towards better bowel health and sign up for my tutorial “How to Poo Like a superstarWithout the Straining” for detailed step by step instructions.
