Dear  Friends,

Recently  I  celebrated  my  ten  year  anniversary  with  Second  Harvest  Food  Bank.    My  parents  always  told  me  that  ?me  really  starts  to  fly  aAer  40  and  boy  were  they   right.     It   seems   like   only   yesterday   that   I   was   listening   to   the   Board  members  who  hired  me  say  “we  brought  you  here  to  grow  this  food  bank.”

And  looking  back  to  where  we  started  ten  years  ago,  we  have  definitely  grown  this  food  bank.    I  say  “we”  because  this  was  made  possible  by  a  great  Board,  a  great  staff  and  great  community  support.     If   I  bring  any  talent  to  the  table  at  all,  it  is  finding  good  people  to  help  me  and  geLng  out  of  their  way.

There  is  much  to  celebrate  but  a  few  accomplishments  really  s?ck  out  for  me.    First,  the  growth  in  overall  pounds  distributed  has  been  tremendous.    We  have  gone  from  7  million  pounds  annually  ten  years  ago  to  an  expected  42  million  pounds  this  fiscal  year.    Especially  significant  in  looking  at  pounds  is  our  growth  in  produce,  meat  and  dairy  products.

These   pounds   are   very   important   because   these   are   items   essen?al   for   a  healthy  diet  but  also  items  that  folks  in  need  can  least  afford  to  purchase.    We  expect  to  distribute  close  to  16  million  pounds  of  these  items  this  fiscal  year.

Ending  child  hunger  has  been  a  primary  area  of  emphasis  for  us  and  we  now  have   158   child   hunger   programs   including   Kids   Café   sites   and   Backpack  Programs.    These  programs  have  grown  an  average  of  72%  per  year  and  while  this   is   amazing   growth,   we   s?ll   need   your   help   in   establishing   addi?onal  Backpack  Programs.

Finally,  the  growth  in  volunteers  has  been  very  exci?ng  for  the  Food  Bank.    This  past  year  we  topped  100,000  volunteer  hours  and  this  had  the  result  of  more  than  doubling  our   staff.     Importantly,   this   saved   lots  of  dollars   that  we  were  able  to  redirect  towards  feeding  more  people.

We  have   included   in  this   issue  of  Blessings  some  “rewind”  pages.    Be  on  the  lookout  for  these  reflec?ons  back  on  some  of  our  favorite  events.    Let  me  say  a  personal   thank   you   to   everyone  who  has   supported   these   efforts   during  my  first  ten  years,  you  have  helped  so  many  people  in  need.

As  we   look  ahead   to   the  next   ten  years,   I   am  going   to  need  your  help  more  than  ever.    The  Food  Bank  is  in  desperate  need  of  more  space  so  that  we  can  feed  more   people.    We   have   launched   a   capital   campaign   that   you   will   be  hearing  more  about  in  the  next  few  months.    Please  consider  helping  us  as  we  define  what   our   next   decade   together   is   going   to   look   like.     And   remember  that  even   though   I   am   ten   years  older  now  and  moving  a   li^le   slower,   I   s?ll  have  the  world’s  best  job.

Page 7: Blessings spring 2014

dunkHUNGERThanks to the Charlotte Bobcats, Walgreens and an amazing design by Odell, this year’s Dunk Hunger raised over 8,000 boxes of cereal for Second Harvest. !!In addition to the cereal that it took to build the store fronts at the “Corner of Happy and Healthy”, both the Bobcat’s and Walgreens held special drives that added 2,000 additional boxes of cereal. !!Bobcat fans donating cereal or purchasing special vouchers had a chance to win court-side seats to next year’s home opener against Chicago. Walgreens sponsored an in-store promotion at Charlotte area locations so customers could participate by purchasing boxes of cereal.

This is the 6th year that the Charlotte Bobcats have sponsored Dunk Hunger. Odell has designed the plans for every one of the six structures. To date, this event has raised over 210,000 pounds to help feed the hungry in our region. See the following page for a “rewind” of the history of Dunk Hunger.

LEGAL FEEDING FRENZY

Volunteers from Moore & Van Allen and Piedmont Natural Gas joined forces at Second Harvest Food Bank to stuff a thousand backpacks that will provide nutritious meals to children at Devonshire Elementary on weekends when school meals are not available. !!The packing event was part of the North Carolina Bar Association’s 2014 Legal Feeding Frenzy. This challenge ran from March 10 - March 28, and as of press time for Blessings, awards had not yet been presented. Make sure and check out our next issue to see if Moore & Van Allen can repeat their top place finish in 2013 and whether Piedmont Natural Gas can repeat their win of the Attorney General’s Cup in 2013.

CHARLOTTE CROP WALK

The Charlotte Crop Walk has been one of the nation’s largest for decades. The 2013 event was one of the most successful ever, raising $314,000 to fight hunger in Charlotte and around the world. !!Thanks to the 6,000 people who participated in this year’s walk. Second Harvest, Crisis Assistance, and Loaves & Fishes will each receive over $25,000.

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas sponsored their 5th annual “Pints for Pounds” campaign in January and February. The annual campaign provides seven pounds of food to Second Harvest for every pint of blood donated. This year’s campaign provided 48,858 pounds of food to Second Harvest. !!Since the “Pints for Pounds” campaign began in 2009, Community Blood Center has been able to contribute 231,384 pounds of food to help feed the hungry in the community.

On December 16th, the Drayton Florence

Kids Corner

Our friend Cooper started collecting peanut butter and jelly at his birthday parties six years ago. Cooper turned eight this year and donated 180 jars of peanut butter and jelly to Second Harvest. Thanks Cooper, you are our hero!

Holden and Connor from Cub Scout Pack 151 in Indian Trail, pictured above, were among 365 scouts who collected food for our partner agencies in Anson, Cabarrus, Montgomery, Rowan and Union counties, as part of Scouting for Food. Collectively the troops donated almost 33,000 pounds. Great job!

Thanks to JT, pictured above with his parents, for collecting $500 to help the Food Bank feed hungry kids. JT went to his family, friends, neighbors, and even to his Dad’s office collecting these funds. When JT gets a little older, there is a fundraising job waiting for him at Second Harvest.

In February, all of the second graders at Charlotte Latin collected food to help Second Harvest feed hungry children. One of the second grade classes is pictured above with their donations. !!Special thanks for the Valentine cards the children made and delivered. You rock!

Thanks to our friends at Pet Paradise for sponsoring their fifth annual pet food drive in November and December. Pet Paradise is an upscale pet boarding facility and resort headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida that operates 18 facilities across the United States. !!This year's drive raised over 12,000 pounds for the Second Harvest Pet Food Bank. All of the food will be used to help keep families and their pets together.

On March 29, Carolina Critter Sitters and K104.7 sponsored an egg hunt and rescue event for local dogs. As part of the event, the company asked participants to bring dog food for the Second Harvest Pet Food Bank. Thanks for including us in this fun event.

Thanks to all of our friends at Mallard Creek Animal Hospital for hosting their fourth annual Pet Food Drive during the holidays. The staff and their customers collected almost 2,300 pounds of food, bringing their four year total to almost 10,000 pounds. !!We appreciate your support of our Pet Food Bank!

ROCK!2END HUNGERParty With a Purpose Returns

On February 22, Tom and Valerie McKernan hosted their second annual Rock n Roll Party to benefit the Food Bank’s Child Hunger Programs. Close to one hundred couples were invited to the party where admission was a donation to Second Harvest.!!The 2013 party raised over $9,500. Turns out the second time was the charm with the 2014 event raising over $13,000. Thanks to Tom, Val and all their generous friends, thousands of hungry children will have enough nutritious food to eat. We cannot wait for Rock n’ Roll 3.

SPOTLIGHT ON MOBILE PANTRY PROGRAM

In early 2011, one of our major food donors, Target, announced that Second Harvest had been selected to participate in their Meals for Minds program. Meals for Minds targets high-need elementary schools by providing monthly mobile pantry shopping experiences for parents struggling to feed their children. !!Target selected Albemarle Road Elementary and Shamrock Gardens Elementary as the Charlotte sites for the program. Since 2011, Second Harvest has provided staple pantry goods, fresh produce, meat and dairy, diapers, and other non-food products to parents at both schools on a monthly basis. Currently the program serves almost 900 students per month at the two schools.!!The success of the Meals for Minds program encouraged us to work with other donors including the Charlotte Bobcats, ADM, and the Will Play for Food Foundation to expand the Mobile Pantries to additional high-risk elementary schools. We have especially focused our efforts on elementary

schools, where the Food Bank already sponsors a Backpack Program. !!Thanks to these donors, we have been able to serve parents and children at Devonshire Elementary, J.H. Gunn Elementary, H i g h l a n d R e n a i s s a n c e A c a d e m y, Billingsville Elementary, Thomasboro Elementary, Reid Park Elementary, Druid H i l l s E lementary and Rama Road Elementary.!!Each time we visit one of these schools we deliver between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds of food. Our goal is to continue expanding this program with special emphasis on elementary schools with a 90% and higher free and reduced lunch rate. !!If you are interested in helping to sponsor a mobile pantry or volunteering, please c o n t a c t K a y C a r t e r a t [email protected].!!The photos on this page and the next page show a few o f our mobi le pant ry experiences.

WEOUR VOLUNTEERS

April 6 - 13 was National Volunteer Week. We spent the week at the Food Bank trying to find as many ways as possible to thank the thousands of volunteers who donate their time each year at the food bank. This past year, our community donated over 100,000 volunteer hours to Second Harvest. This was the equivalent of more than doubling our entire staff.!!Everyone is welcome at the Food Bank and we would encourage you to consider volunteering. Volunteers are engaged in a wide range of activities and there is truly something for everyone. Just see the pictures below.

Volunteers from Elevation Church painted all of our Food Drive Barrels during Love Week.

We often have families volunteer together like this group at our Harvest Feast Marathon Food Drive.

Our major food donors, like Sam’s Club, pictured above, often come in and help process salvage. !!Local at torneys, p ictured at r ight , volunteered as Shoe Guys at our Wine, Women and Shoes Event.

REWINDReceiving the 2013 award was an even greater honor considering Second Harvest had previously received the award in 2008. The rewind picture to the right shows Kay and Charles posing with the 2008 check, which was used to purchase healthy nutritious food. Thanks to Bank of America for being an amazing partner!

Second Harvest Food Bank was recently surprised with the 2013 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders Award. Kay Carter is pictured at left accepting the award from Charles Bowman of Bank of America.
