EUCHARIST, BREAD AND FISH FR ANDREW WOJTAN HOMILY SUMMARY JULY 22, 2018
Jesus says: ‘Give them something to eat yourselves.’ Are we going to spend 7 months’ wag-es just to give them a bit to eat? It can’t be done! The Angel said to Mary: ‘Nothing is impossible with God!’
There are three breads! ‘Give us today our daily bread.’ – Which bread are you thinking about? The bread for the body; the bread of the Word of God, and the bread of the Eucharist! Lord Jesus has to alert us for the bread of the Word of God, and we are very slow to accept it. That’s why we need to start the journey of the Word of God. First He awakens them with the Word of God, and then He feeds them with the bodily bread and tells them: it’s a symbol of the great bread He wants to give them. This seems to be the great desire of God to feed us with His Word also now.
People go on vacation, spend a lot of money, but very often their own soul is speaking: ‘These things you do for the body are fine, but I am not happy; give me food for my soul.’ People searching for healers are in great need of the Word of God; they are in need of the Eucharist. Only the Eucharist can satisfy our deepest longings. When we are deeply satisfied inside, many other things are not necessary.
Jesus was about to accomplish His great miracle, but not by magic—‘abracadabra.’ He wanted to give a sacrificial gift, because the Eucharist is the gift of love. When He said: ‘Feed them yourselves!’ it was an official command to the Church to feed the world; there are 3 breads.
Jesus wants to take us on a journey of God’s Word so that we can truly recognize Him in the breaking of bread. Everyone can eat as much as he wishes of the 3 breads, so that each person can reach fullness of destiny and personal calling. But first we hear we ‘eat’ the Word of God, to recognize the depth of the Eucharist. The gift of the Eucharist is the gift of the Church. It’s also the sacrificial gift of the person who is giving it to us; not only Jesus. So let us pray for the voca-tions; let us bring our gifts to have a share in His life.
