In Cycle C of the liturgy, these Gospel passages follow one another each week beginning with Epiphany. Each of these three events expresses something of the depth and breadth of the mystery of Incarnation as it unfolds in the life of Christ and in us. The Visit of the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12) The Gospel for Epiphany Sunday, is most commonly associated with the manifestation of Jesus’ divinity to the whole world. The Baptism of the Lord (Luke 3:15-16) is Christ’s revelation to the Jews and prefigures his descent into his own death and rising in the resurrection. The Wedding Feast of Cana (John 2:1-11) is Jesus’ revelation of the power of his own divinity to his apostles and disciples. The new wine, the best wine saved for last, symbolized the message of the gospel. WHO WERE THE MAGI? The story of the Magi traveling from the East to see the Christ child appears only in Matthew’s Gospel. The word Magi means a learned scholar or sage. The Magi (possibly Zoroastrian astrologers from Persia) interpreted a bright star in the Eastern skies as a sign that a great king was to be born. According to St. Ignatius of Antioch: “A star shone forth in heaven above all the other stars, the light of which was inexpressible, while its novelty struck people with astonishment.” (Letter to the Ephesians 19). The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem of Judea, and upon arriving they worshipped the infant Jesus and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Congratulations Remy Young!!! Most Reverend Earl Boyea has appointed Remy as a member of the Board of Directors of the Livingston County Catholic Charities. Letter from Bishop Earl Boyea: “I am grateful for your willingness to support the Board in managing this Catholic Charities agency by providing overall leadership and strategic direction to the executive director, in carrying out the agency’s mission of sharing God’s love by performing the corporal and the spiritual works of mercy. I encourage you to engage actively in and pray daily for this essential work and ministry of the Catholic Church. Thank you, Remedios, for your willingness to serve the agency and the Catholic Diocese of Lansing”.

Blessing of the Home on Epiphany

The Blessing of the home and inscription of initials of

the three Magi above each door can be performed by

either a priest of the head of the family.

The feast of manifestation, or Epiphany, is traditionally

celebrated on the 12th day after Christmas, January 6th.

In the dioceses of the United States this feast has been

moved to the Sunday between January 2nd & January

8th.

On entering the home:

Leader: (Priest if present, or head of the family)

Peace be to this house.

Leader: And to all who dwell herein.

All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to

adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they

offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense

for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

Leader: Our Father…And lead us not into

temptation.

All: But deliver us from evil.

Leader: All they from Sheba shall come.

All: Bringing gold & frankincense.

Leader: O, Lord, hear my prayer.

All: And let my cry come to You.

Leader: Let us pray. O God, who by the guidance of

a start didst on this day manifest Thine only begotten

Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we who

know Thee by faith may also attain the vision of Thy

glorious majesty. Through Christ Our Lord.

All: Amen.

Leader: Be enlightened, be enlightened, O Jerusalem,

for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen

upon thee – Jesus Christ born of the Virgin Mary.

All: And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light and kings

in the splendor of thy rising, and the glory of the Lord

has risen upon thee.

Leader: Let us pray. Bless, O Lord God almighty,

this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the

strength of victor, humility, goodness, & mercy, the

fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the

Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may

this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who

dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

After the prayers of the blessing are recited, the initials

of the Magi & year are inscribed upon the doors with

the blessed chalk. (The initials C, M, B, can also be

interpreted as the Latin phrase “Christus mansionen

benedicat” which means Christ Bless this house.)

We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. Matt 2:2

The Magi came to worship the newborn Child, king of a nation not their own. They got directions at the royal palace, but they found the Child in an unremarkable house with his mother, unattended by the servants as a royal child would have had. Undeterred, they fell down and did him homage, or worshipped him. They gave him their gifts without commentary. And then they left. They asked for nothing. All that travel, all the expense, and they asked for nothing – no thank you, no hospitality, no food or drink for themselves or their servants, if they had them, or their beasts. Nothing but the privilege of offering worship to the Child. They make me wonder, when I find myself complaining that the music at the Epiphany Mass wasn’t to my taste, or the homily failed to inspire me, or the kids in the back of the church were too noisy for me to pray. They make me wonder, those mysterious strangers who asked for not one single thing for themselves, not one thing expect to worship the Savior I claim to love.

When you go to church or kneel to pray at home, what are you looking for?

Jesus Christ, born to be our Savior, purify our hearts of all the gift-seeking

that keeps us from genuine gift-giving to you and to others.

Parishioner Donations - Giving Back To The Lord The report will not be listed in this week’s bulletin due to the printer deadline. Next week we will resume with the donations list. Thank you for your understanding!
