Foreword The Beatitudes found in the Gospel of Matthew are a greatly loved portion of Scripture often referred to by our clergy. It seemed that considering their individual messages and setting those messages to music might be a new and enlightening way to reflect on these words of Jesus. There are various performance possibilities for these reflections. They can be used individually as service voluntaries (preludes, offertories, communion music, interludes, meditations, and funeral music). They could also be used (either all of them or a subset grouping) in a special meditative service (perhaps during Lent), interleaving them with readings from scripture. The pieces could also be performed as concert selections. You will undoubtedly find other new uses for these simple reflections. Suggested registrations are provided for a three-manual organ. However, all the pieces can be easily adapted for performance on a two-manual instrument, and you as the organist should feel free to choose whatever sounds are best effective on the instrument at hand. You are encouraged to be creative in considering the message in each Beatitude and making it an inspiring part of your worship services and special programs.
