N-1759 September 1986 NCEL By Robert N. Murtha Technical Note Sponsored By Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board BLAST DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR tFLAT SLAB STRUCTURES ABSTRACT 'A general step-by-step procedure was developed for designing flat slab structures to resist dynamic blast loads. The procedure is consistent with the Navy's current blast-resistant design manual NAVFAC P-397 and is based on an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model of a flat slab. The distribution of reinforcement throughout the slab is based on the elastic distribution of design moments outlined by the American Concrete Institute (ACl). The step-by-step procedure is easily adapted to flat slabs of any configuration and considers both flexural and shear behavior.
