Who We Are

Christian Surfers is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through our ac-tions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if the Lord draws you, or any of your friends or family, into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the CS guys or gals at the events or e-mail us.

Monthly Events

We meet each month, either in front of First Peak, at Sebastian Inlet State Park or at contest sites. We arrive at different times ac-cording to the tide or contest start time, we set up our tent and coolers and then we surf, pass out wax, sunscreen, magazines… and just hang out. We gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve. Then we clean up the beach after a long and busy day. Check out the Upcoming Events section, on our website, to see what time and where we meet next. Connect with us on Facebook (Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet) to stay on top of updates.

Special Events

We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer Surf Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. We also serve at the Surf Expo two times a year providing daily coffee and donuts as well as man power on the last day of the show, to help the industry pack up after a long week.

We serve at National and Regional Contests:

ASF Contests, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Tour, Rip Curl Grom Search…

Name: Nathan James Adams Employer: Eastern Surf Magazine Job description: Photo Editor / Photographer How many years on the job: 3 ½ years Greatest fear: Not sure how to describe the greatest, but going over the falls and bouncing off the bottom on my head or taking a fin to the face keeps me on edge when out swimming to get the shot! Most enjoyable adventure: All of my surf trips/adventures are memorable and enjoyable in some fashion or another. But when you’re surrounded by good energy, high enthusiasm to get work done with lots of laughing, all while enjoying it alongside those with you, it makes each adventure special in its own way! Family: None, but the youngest of four in the Adams clan! Favorite surf destination: Anywhere in the Caribbean, but really anywhere anyone wants to go to surf and shoot with good vibes and a solid work ethic! Who is our next Kelly Slater: That’s hard to say as life can throw you a curveball at any time to knock you off your horse. And for the youth, it’s even harder. But with the right tools and guidance it’s less likely to happen, so I can’t really think of anyone who will ever “be our next Kelly Slater” but rather who is going to be next at coming remotely close? I’d put my cash on John John Florence but those are some seriously big shoes to fill and doubt they will ever be worn the way Kelly has over the last couple of decades! Last surf trip: As of writing this, Puerto Rico with some up and coming groms like Luke Marks and Tommy Coleman and then back to cover the ASP 4* Rip Curl Pro. Typical day at the office: Answering emails, editing images, planning for features online for the day and features in each issue as the images are

finalized. Then some more editing, emailing with various photographers from the best in the business to the “I just started and my friends told me to send you images”. And did I mention editing images, haha! Typical day on location: If you mean location as in a surf trip, then it’s up as early possible, praying for good lighting and rippable conditions, grind some food and repeat till the sun goes down, plus I occasionally squeeze in a surf for myself to keep the stoke meter full! What do you do when not behind the lens: I just try my best to make it all count every day as life is a gift, so I’m not one for just sitting around waiting for something to happen as time will pass you by! It seems we have some great talent in the area putting together quality videos and photos, any words of wisdom for them: Be passionate about what you’re capturing and always push yourself beyond your comfort zone by not being afraid to fail as this will only help you develop better skills for future endeavors yet defines a personal style to your craftsmanship and art by taking the time to create something special and meaningful!

Nate Adams

We want to thank all the guys at ESM (Nate, Dugan…) for providing us with photos when they can. It has been a blessing, for sure.

Sun Bum

Tell us about your Bum Rush tour, how it works and where it will takes place. “Our ‘ judges’ will roll out of bed whenever they feel like it, pick up some hot coffee and in the company’s modified Sub-urban, find a nice break where some kids are free surfing, put up a tent, and start the competition,” said Dustin Smith, Sun Bum’s Event Director. “Fifteen minutes later somebody’s gonna get paid.” The tour, which will hit beach towns again this summer, will not just be about surfing, they’ll also be about capturing the whole Sun Bum vibe. “It’s a legit contest, meaning we are looking at who has the best style and gets the best waves,” Dustin explained, “but our judges will also be taking points off for such things as bad board shorts and bad attitudes.” What if there are no waves that day, you ask? Dustin says, “If there are no waves than we’ll find some groms’ skim board-ing, or go to a skate park… either way, we’ll have a contest and give someone a grand just for doing what they love.” The company, who does not sponsor pro’s, is looking to ride the waves of the everyday rat, who loves the beach, loves the waves, but unfortunately, also has to work for a living or go to school all day. “We’re not against pro’s” Smith re-sponded, “we just thought it would be cool to give someone else a chance to stand on the podium with champagne in their eyes and a big check over their head.” We have also read about the bands that are stopping by and playing on your back porch, named after your mascot Sonny. What’s that all about? "Sonny's Porch is made for the road-weary band, offering them all the creature comforts they miss while traveling," said Event Director Dustin Smith. It is a place to get off the road, ride some waves, eat some food, shoot some pool, or just crash for a few hours. If they feel like playing some music on our back porch... we're stoked. Purpose - The Movie

Featuring 34 athletes from the SURF, SKATE, SNOWBOARD, and WAKE communities, "PURPOSE" is a film produced by the Ride Nature Organization in collaboration with Walking on Wa-ter, Nations Foundation, Skate Bible, and This IZ My Story. The film includes footage, testimonies, and scripture shared from huge names in the action sports industry (Damien Hobgood, Bethany Hamil-ton, Brett Barley, Brad Ettinger, and Noah Snyder just to name a few of the surfers!) This film is one that was truly created to “Impact the world through action sports!” Through a collective accumulation of footage from some of the most talented filmers in the industry this film explodes with some of the

most insane shots ever caught on camera, while most importantly diving into the clear and simple message of Jesus Christ and his plan and PURPOSE for each of our lives. Through the message, scripture verses, testimonies, and one unifying connection between each of the athletes, the PURPOSE for why they ride, this film is one that will leave each individ-ual watching asking themselves, “Am I living a life of TRUE PURPOSE?” To watch a trailer for the film and to learn more about this project and the upcoming release date, just check out www.purposefilm.com. Where You At?

Q. I have several Christian friends, but we all seem to believe different things! When it

comes to things like creationism or even using cuss words, we just don't agree. I always

say, "Well, what matters is that we agree that Jesus is our Savior." Secretly though,

their different beliefs bug me. What can I do about this frustration?

A. I understand your frustration. Why do we have to be so different? Why can't we agree

on everything and decide conclusively what's right and what's wrong?

Jesus said, "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one anoth-

er" (John 13:35, NIV). Disagreements like you've mentioned are the proving ground for love.

It wouldn't be hard to love your clone. But when you can show love for those who don't be-

lieve what you believe (even people you're sure are just wrong!), Jesus says it's a sign you're

one of his true followers.

Where God’s Purpose and Your Passion Meet Recently, a young man asked me if his passion for old cars could really be part of his “God-ordained purpose” or if it’s just his self-centered materialistic desire. Is doing something you enjoy just your own selfish desire, or is it a legitimate way to honor God? Have you ever thought that doing God’s will must involve suffering and sacrifice?

We often overlook Psalm 37:4: “Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” God wants to give us not just the bare necessities but the desires of our heart. Paying attention to all three questions will bring you into renewed clarity not only for next steps, but for your long-term vision of calling. 1. What is your passion? 2. What do you do best? 3. How will you make a profit? 4. How will you impact others for Christ? Christian Surfers found a way to incorporate Christ in the thing they love to do most. They found a way to incorporate Christ into their sphere of influence. Christ can use your passions to glorify him, you just have to find a way. Simply ask yourself today, “what are my passions?” Then follow up that question with, “how can I incorporate those gifts to also reach others for Christ?” Get creative and simply ask God for ideas. Even though I knew I was called to ministry, I never thought that one day my love for surfing might be a vehicle by which others would see God’s love. We are all wired differently with different likes and passions, the question is: how will you use yours?

Jesus will fix all my problems. Really? We hear that if you would just turn to Jesus he will fix all your problems, after all he is love, right? But how does this sales pitch line up with the gospel? It hardly squares away with Jesus own words: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 6:24.) Log onto our website at www.christiansurferssi.com to read more about what it means to be called to follow Jesus.

CSUS Devotion

Gospel of Matthew Key Verse: Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefor and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Introduction: Matthew records the story of the life of Christ and His ministry. Beginning with the promise of His birth, and end-ing with His ascension into heaven, Matthew reveals Jesus as the Messiah of Israel and the world. A key phrase throughout Matthew is, “that it might be fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet.” The word Gospel means Good News and that is what the writers of the New Testament were bringing to everyone.

The Story provides a beautiful, powerful, yet simple

explanation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ using 4 major themes found in the Bible:

Creation / The Fall / The Rescue / The Restoration

The Christian worldview is clearly communicated to those who are interested in what Christians believe and also provides an understanding of how to become a Christian through faith in the Gospel. Log onto our website www.cssebastianinlet.com to read the story on-line or stop by our tent, during contests, and pick up a copy for yourself and a friend.

What are you chasing after? Will it matter?

Too many spend their lives looking for something other than God to fill their longing for meaning—business, family, sports, etc. But in pursuing these things that are not eternal, they re-main unfulfilled and wonder why their lives never seem satisfac-tory. There is no doubt that many people pursuing things other than God achieve a measure of “happiness” for a time. But when we consider Solomon, who had all the riches, success, esteem, and power in the world we see that none of it fulfilled the longing for eternity. He declared it all “vanity,” meaning that he sought after these things in vain because they did not satisfy. In the end he said, “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole [duty] of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. As the master shaper, God works in us to shape us for His glory and to His plan. We may not know exactly what our final shape will look like. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? We will never be glassed, in this shaping bay, the Master Shaper is never finished with us.
