Rise Above Plastics Rise Above Plastics Program (RAP) is an increasingly important program for many Florida Surfrider Chapters. RAP is designed to eliminate the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics. Quad: Youth Outreach Program Surfrider Foundation launched the QUAD youth service program in 2008 in response to overwhelming interest across the country from young people that wished to become more involved in Surfrider Foundation’s activities on their campuses and communities. The program has grown to a wide range of activities including organizing a club and initiatives based on pro-ject-based learning. These range from beach clean ups to eliminating single use plastics on-campus to greening your cam-pus. Ocean Friendly Gardens Urban runoff is often the primary source of ocean pollution. The Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFG) Program educates and as-sists people in creating landscapes that utilize native plants, permeable groundcovers and water retention features to pre-vent urban runoff, create wildlife habitats and design beautiful spaces. Vegetable gardens can be OFGs too, as long as they “apply CPR.”

Blue Water Task Force The Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) supported by Emergen-C Blue is the Surfrider Foundation’s volunteer-run, water testing, education and advocacy program. Our chapters use this program to alert citizens and officials in their communities about water quality problems and to work toward solutions. The BWTF has demonstrated success by identifying problems with beach and coastal water pollution, raising public awareness of these incidents and working collaboratively with local stake-holders to find and implement pollution solutions. Know Your H2O Know Your H2O is our program that promotes education and action regarding the interconnections between water supply, urban runoff and waste water treatment. By rethinking our water management approach we can conserve water, save en-

For those of you that don't know, the "Vans Warped Tour" is one of the largest secular music festival tours in the United States. With over 40 different festival locations across the U.S. all being hosted in less than 2 months, this past summer the tour had a little over 500,000 in attendance! Mathew 5:16 reminds us to let our light shine before others, so that they may see our good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. We counted it a huge blessing to partner with the VWT for the second year and to be a light into the Warped tour this summer. We are looking forward to next summer and to continue pouring into this industry.

My experience with Ride Nature and the opportunity to go on the Vans Warped Tour first began when I was faced with the question, "Was I really supposed to go." I wrestled with God on this question for what seemed like months and finally He said to me, "I'm calling you to reach a generation that is lost, and needs to know who their father is, and ulti-mately needs to know what freedom I can give them." When I got than answer from God I knew it was game on but little did I know what I was getting myself into. Months of hard work and long late night drives definitely pushed me

to my limit but that's what God does when he calls us to an adventure. He calls us to set out from our comfort zone and always equips those that he calls! Early on in the tour I had the opportunity to pray for a girl that had scars all up and down her arms. Before praying for her I told her how proud I was of her. As she looked at me confused and asked why, I told her that I saw her scars that were now healed and shared with her a part of my life when I struggled with the same thing. I told her about the love of God and how He had set me free and that led into the opportunity to pray for her before she left the booth. There was another time when we were at a restaurant late at night and we had the chance to pray with a homeless man near the res-taurant. We prayed for the power of God to restore his faith and we were able to give him a Bible and bless him before we left. Even though the Vans Warped Tour is a pretty dark place there were people being set free from the enemy everywhere on the tour. I was happy to find a little community of Christians there on the tour that believed in the power of God and I truly believe this made a huge impact for the kingdom. Throughout the tour there were chances for us to hand out New Testament Bibles and Gospels of John and knowing that we were handing them words that were inspired by the very God that created them was an amazing feeling. This summer allowed me to grow in my faith as well as God showed me areas in my life that I needed to trust him more and allow myself to be pushed beyond my comfort Zone.....and trust me I never felt like I had a comfort zone before this summer. I am so thankful that I got to be a part of an organization such as Ride Nature and I pray for ever individual that we reached this summer, the seeds that were plants, and that they will come to know a per-sonal relationship with the Creator of everything. I want to encourage all of you to pray for the Vans Warped Tour, pray for Ride Nature, and pray for the lives of hundreds of thou-sands of youth around the world who don't know the love of Jesus Christ and the efforts of many to reach them with the Good News.

How to do an S-TURN:

1) bring your board up high on the shoul-der while keeping compressed in your stance. 2) rotate your head and shoulders so the will be pointing into the direction that you want to go. 3) push on your heels to put the board on rail, compress your body by bending your hips and knees. 4) bring the board down the face of the wave and out onto the flats as you maintain the rotation of you head and shoulders. 5) pick a spot on the lip and bring the board up the face and hit the lip while ro-tating into the other direction as to ride out of the turn.

Who We Are FLOW is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at [email protected] Monthly Events We meet each month, either in front of First Peak, at Sebastian Inlet State Park or at contest sites. We arrive at different times accord-ing to the tide or contest start times, we set up our tent and coolers and we serve those around us. We either help the contest get set up and broken down or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and FLOW stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and for geared to first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer FLOW Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. There are lots of ways to be involved just come and see. We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Florida Contests, ASF Championships, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Tour, Rip Curl Grom Search… Get plugged at: [email protected] www.fellowshipledonwater.com www.facebook.com/FLOWSebastianInlet

The 2014 Atlantic Surfing Federation Championships presented by DSR was held again at Florida’s famous Sebastian Inlet State Park. A total of two hundred and two com-petitors from the east coast were greeted by sunny blue skies and waist high surf that built as the competition progressed throughout the weekend. Newly elected ASF Exec-utive Director Phil Jackson, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina could not have been more pleased with the three day competitions turn out. The kids are having a great time and there is something for the whole family. We want everyone to have fun. The ASF is here to provide a positive family atmosphere and we want kids to be able to surf and learn family core values, while also providing a pathway to take their skills to the next level.” The presenting sponsor, DSR kept the grooms entertained in the heat with a Kendama contest and giveaways. Sun Bum was on hand to keep the crowds safe by providing a sun screen station. F.L.O.W. (Fellowship led on water) provided the spec-tators with plenty of water, Gatorade, snacks and free on site ding repair.

Finals day saw the most sizable surf as well as a packed beach. Competitors were filled with excitement as stacked heats battled it out for the first place titles. Recently established New Jersey chapter director Ben Graeff, of NubTV, alongside cameraman Mark Haryslak cap-tured all of the action with post heat interviews. Morgan Weaver claimed the boys and girls U10 1st place spot for the second year in a row in the dying minutes of his heat with a quick front side slash, earning him a mid-range 5. Melbourne beach local Tommy Coleman pocketed 1st place in U12 with his powerful backside surfing. Coleman, 11 years old has a promising future ahead of him, drawing mature and impressive lines each wave. Winning his heat in the last minute, Coleman said “I was trying to do my best out there. Luckily, I got that last right!” When asked about his shaper and board dimensions, Coleman replied “I am so happy right now, I can’t remember any-thing!” Robbie McCormick, of New Smyrna Beach Florida, won both boys U16 and U14 titles, displaying stylish front side surfing and pro-gressive Ariel maneuvers. “Everyone was struggling to get waves in the beginning. I finally got the one I needed and pulled a high score - pretty stoked!” On the girl’s side, Hannah Blevins went home with a huge smile after putting her all into every turn, winning the U12 first place title. Rachael Presti, of Melbourne Beach showed impressive style way beyond her years as she took down the girls U14 division. “I have prac-ticed and tried so hard. I feel great and am so happy that I did well.” Emory McClary, the only competitor to take down three divisions claimed the U16 & U18 titles with incredible back hand surfing. McClary showed the crowd she not only rips on a short board, but knows a thing or two about long boarding with her U18 Girls Longboard 1st place trophy. “I’m feeling pretty great right now. I’m so happy. I wasn’t expecting it, especially in the longboard division.” Inlet local, Chauncey Robinson, displayed powerful mature surfing and his ability to read the fickle peaky conditions as the winner of the highly coveted boys U18 title. “I didn’t do to well in my earlier heats - so I learned from that. I caught a bunch of waves this time and surfed them to the best of my ability. So I am feeling stoked.” Girls and boys U18 winners, McClary and Robinson both went home with impressive hardware as well as a unique piece of surf art by New Jersey artist Jess Schmidt. Chauncey’s brother, Wiley Robinson had a successful weekend as well, taking down the men’s final at their home peak. The most anticipated event of the day, the prestigious open division title was awarded to 13 year old Micha Cantor, from South Carolina. He scored an 8.87 with seconds remaining in the final heat. His victory lap consisted of 4 backhand snaps on an impressive open faced set wave. “In the beginning we were scrambling for little waves. Towards the end they began to get a lot better, and I just found the right one.” Cantor is the youngest competitor to take down the open division in ASF history. The weekend was filled with laughs, newly made friendships and positive competition displayed in each division. As the awards ceremony came to an end, Phil Jackson presented Thomas Cook with the inaugural Randy Sanders memorial “Keep the stoke alive” award. Chad Carr, the Florida ASF district director stated “It is great to keep the tradition alive here at Sebastian Inlet. There is a lot of culture and history at this spot. Contests are not held here as often anymore, and I am glad that these kids can be a part of something so special.” On behalf of the ASF I would like to thank all the sponsors, families, members, media, photogra-phers, judges, staff, volunteers and the state of Florida for the support. Said Executive Director Phil Jackson.

North Shore Nate

I have been in Hawaii for the past month now. I am staying on the North Shore of Oahu surfing, training, and interning at Sunset Beach Christian Church. Only a few days after I got here to Hawaii a big swell hit with 20+ foot face waves. I had a few great sessions out at Pipeline and Sunset Beach, shak-ing the dust off since not being in waves this big all year. Dur-ing one of my first sessions at Sunset a massive wave broke way out side catching me and many others off guard. Hawai-ian legend, Kala Alexander, was the only one in position and he charged the massive 25 foot drop on his stand up paddle board. I would have much preferred to be in his shoes as I had to dive down in front of the avalanche of white water and hold my breath as I got dragged under water. Surprisingly the leash on my board did not break and I came up several seconds later and was able to paddle to the channel. I pray to God so often for safety when I am in big waves, but this has reminded me to pray and praise God, not just when I am scared of waves, but equally as much when I just want to talk to Him.

When I am not surfing and training or getting worked by sets at Sunset, I am working at Sunset Beach Christian Church as a youth group intern. I get to lead Bible studies for the youth kids as well as help out with the main Sunday services. I got to teach at youth group a couple weeks ago and spoke on John 15:5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”

After I taught we broke the kids into small groups to pray and discuss what it looks like to ‘bear fruit’ in their own lives. The kids left setting goals, with accountability in the group, to read the Bible and truly pray and talk to God daily. I am lov-ing seeing God use my life as a surfer to be a servant for His Kingdom.

STUFF

Jesus used to talk about how ludicrous it was to store stuff up on earth: “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” He is right. Our hearts follow our stuff. Like Jesus says, storing up on earth is useless. We should have learned from the pharaohs. They built the largest stor-age units the world has known, but they still couldn’t take their stuff with them. Worse, it all wound up being looted by tomb raiders. It’s the same for us. We can keep storing up stuff. We can keep the best for ourselves. We can buy the baddest car and the biggest house and the coolest clothes, but it all stays on this side of heaven. Instead, we should live simply and live generously. Because if you don’t, the Saturday morning after you die everything’s going for sale on your front lawn. Your Tommy Bahamas shirts, your Express outfit, your socket set and rusty hubcaps, your iPhone and iPad, your Sub-Zero fridge and your 65-inch 3D plasma. And whatever doesn’t sell on Saturday, your brother-in-law from Des Moines is putting on eBay on Sunday.

Hold on Loosely

II think the problem is, we try to hold on to too much. We are like the vervet monkeys of the Kalahari. When the bushmen want to catch a vervet, they carve a small hole in a gourd, drop a rock in it, then tie the gourd to a tree. From above, the curious monkeys have watched the whole thing. As soon as the bushman walks away, the monkey scampers down the tree, crams his fist through the hole, and grabs onto the rock—but now that he has made a fist he can't pull out his hand. As the bushman comes back to capture his prey, the monkey will scream and dance wildly, trying to break free from the gourd, but he won't let go of the treasure in his fist—a worthless rock. We are like that, aren't we? We hold on too tightly. The psalmist writes, "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it." So, ultimately, stuff is not mine or Gods use it wisely. Hold on loosely. Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
