It was exciting starting Black Tie Motorsport Magazine, the opportunities to meet exciting and interesting people and experience new adventures. Meeting with

Terance Mathis—you may now him as the wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons and the new Vice President for Levine Family Racing and NASCAR #95. I was also in the company of Ken Brown, COO of Brownstone Restaurant and American jazz musician Tom “Bones” Malone; Tom gained his fame as a member of “The Blues Brothers” band, the CBS Orchestra, and also heading the house band for “The Late Show” with David Letterman. Then Jay Patel’s nephew--Chirag and his son introduced me to Royal Enfield and then it was a quick trip to Louisiana to attend the beautiful wedding of the now Mr. and Mrs. Damon Becnel… See the full story on page 34.

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 5

Unveiling my new magazine in 2013, gives me the right to a taut drink and a first-rate cigar.

I confess--the determination within me is so strong that I have abandoned orthodox business wisdom. I acted solely on my male instinct, and the passion I hold for the subject of this new publication.

I have dreamed for more than a decade about creating a magazine for men that are devoted to elite automobiles, vessels, and nothing less than the finer things in life. It was after the passing of my sister Ramona that I decided I could not procrastinate any longer; therefore I am proud to release my second publication.

The reaction to my first publication to date has been unexpected; I was astonished that the men of the wiregrass and the emerald coast were so ravenous for information. Inside of Black Tie Motorsport Magazine new facts and secrets about aircraft, automotive, watercraft, cigars, fashion, and electronics will be discovered: how they are made, who creates them and which brands are the best. In each issue we will also report on our editors’ blind test which will rate products from around the world based on their quality, superiority and distinct attributes.

Black Tie is about taste--but it is not limited to the taste of a great meal. This magazine intends to awaken and explore many of the pleasures that motivate successful men.

Black Tie Men want to know about the world’s best restaurants, where fine dining and fine wines are matched with well-stocked humidors; and where to find great resorts for vacations with that special someone. If you have the aspiration to understand robust drinks such as Cognac, Scotch and vintage ports; here is where you will find insight into these and many other portions of pleasure--as well as specific recommendations unlike those found in my first magazine.

Black Tie will also explore emerging hobbies, collectibles, gambling, unique trips, fashion and new ideas in a style--which we believe is diverse from any other men’s magazine. Our editors will travel the world, making every effort possible to turn you on to the most spectacular desires that this world has to offer.

Black Tie may not be for every man--but it is our dream to create a distinct magazine for the individual who wants the very most out of life. If you share this desire--then welcome

This is the beginning of a journey for me that I was not expecting. I find myself in a position where I am--

oddly enough--a voice of reason in a sea of testosterone. Unlike my counterparts, whose appetites lie mainly with high end toys; my hunger lies within these lines. I am the person who is driven, not by a fast car, but by the words that tell about them. I find beauty and logic within the written lines—and it is there where you will find me. Any of the words you will read within these pages will have my fingerprints on them in some way; I might not have the “by” line at the bottom, however I am there.

Earlier this year, Alabama Charlie approached me about coming aboard and joining him in his vision, shortly before the release of my third book. I had been writing privately for a while—waiting two years in between book release dates; when this opportunity arose. I sat and listened to his explanation of what Black Tie would be and I knew that I had to get involved. As a “tomboy” by nature being able to combine my love for the written language with my love for guy toys was a perfect new adventure.

Black Tie is a young face in the printed world; there are many hurdles that have to be conquered. During this growing process we may trip and fall, but every step is a lesson learned. I am proud to put my name as Editor in Chief for Black Tie Motorsport. I am belted in for a wild and decadent ride…

By thinking about a few simple things, you can get better results every time when taking smartphone photos. Here are 10

tips to being a better smartphone-ographer

1. Clean the lensPhotos looking a little milky? One of the biggest problems with smartphone pictures is fingerprints on the lens. You spend the whole day groping your phone, so make sure you wipe away those smeary marks before you start snapping.

2. FocusingFocusing is key to getting a sharp picture that looks impressive. Give your phone the time to focus correctly and make sure that it is actually focused on what you want. Don't always rely on beeps, use your eyes. If it's not focusing correctly, try switching to touch focusing instead for more precision.

3. CompositionThink about what you're looking at and what your picture is trying to show. You can very easily change the shape - also known as aspect ratio - of your photo afterwards, but if it's full of distracting background elements or it's not clear what you're taking a photo of then it's never going to look great. Stop and think about the photo you actually want to show people. Photographers often use the rule of thirds to get the subject  into an ideal position. Imagine the scene with a tic-tac-toe grid over the top. The important things should be aligned along those lines, or at the intersection of those lines, for the greatest impact. It's simple and it works.

4. Watch the sunSunny conditions are great for taking beautiful pictures with rich blue skies and luscious greens, but think about where the sun is when you pull  out your phone. Shoot too close to the sun and  you might find that a giant lens flare dominates the scene or that subjects are massacred by blown highlights with no detail in those areas. In the instance of flare this is because the sun is shining right across the lens. Try using your hand to shade the lens, making sure it's not in  shot, and you can get a great result.

5. Consider the flashThe flash on your smartphone isn't great. It can be harsh and in low-light conditions can result in unusual colors. But the flash can reveal shadow detail in close-up shots in sunny conditions which can be particularly useful. If you do have to use the flash indoors, it can help out dark scenes where shots would otherwise be blurry without the introduction of its additional lighting.

6. Keep it steadySmartphones will often do two things to take shots in low light: one is  give you a longer exposure - the length of time the sensor is gathering light - which can lead to blurry photos; the other is to bump up the ISO -  otherwise known as sensitivity - giving you lots of image noise and making  the shot look grainy. Often your  phone will want to do both, leaving you with a blurry and noisy photo. Supporting your phone will certainly help you get a better shot. It might be a case of resting it on a table, railing, or the bar. Supporting it while you take that

101Smartphone Photography

Page 13: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 13

indoor shot gives you a better chance of getting something usable from it.

7. Avoid the zoomPinch zooming is all the rage on smartphones and more often than not,  you'll be able to zoom digitally in the camera to get closer to your subject. However, this zooming is achieved to the detriment of quality, because what actually happens is you use a smaller area of sensor and then digitally reproduce an image at the same size as you'd normally expect. The result is that there's less information captured to put into the final image. If you need the subject to be bigger, then move closer, or try cropping the image once you've taken it to get closer to the detail,  accepting you'll have a smaller overall image as a result.

8. Keep the sound down, speed things upSome smartphones insist on using a range of beeping noises. In some cases the noises actually slow down the camera. Take a shot to see if the shutter noise really adds anything to the experience. You might find yourself waiting for the noise before you can take the next shot when you  needn't. In this case you'd be best to turn it off. Also consider previews. Some phones will want to show you previews for  longer than necessary. Change the settings to suit you, tweak and go.

9. Vertical videosHey, you're doing it wrong! As more and more people use phones to capture video, more vertical videos are starting to appear. YouTube and Facebook are filling with upright videos that perhaps make sense on your phone, but  once you view them on a computer, you suddenly realize what you've done. That's right, you've created a video that's going to have huge black bars left and right, because you didn't rotate your phone. Do you really want

to waste all that screen because you didn't rotate your smartphone? No, we didn't think so.

10. Software to the rescueThere's a host of free applications that will tweak your photos to improve them. Your phone may well have many of the options built-in already. You can crop the photo to get closer in on the shot's main subject, or just to remove something messy from the side, but perhaps more importantly many applications will add contrast and color that might be lacking in the original.Changing the saturation of your photo can boost colors, changing to black and white might hide image noise, adding a vignette - those darker corners  and edges - might add some retro charm or impact, while helping to lead the viewer's eye on to what's important within the shot. Or there's the  full retro treatment. If your shot can't be saved, why not make it worse, intentionally? Some photo-editing apps that are worth checking out are Photoshop Touch, Snapseed, Perfectly Clear, Instagram, Vignette and Camera360.

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 15

Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, announced the Cessna TTx completed its first production flight on Saturday, March 2. The

single engine composite aircraft departed from the Cessna facility in Independence, Kansas and performed the flight in and around southeast Kansas.

"The TTx performed exceptionally well," said Brian Steele, business leader for the TTx. "In the course of the flight, the pilot took the aircraft to 17,000 feet, and achieved a speed of 213 kts. The TTx is a nimble, top of the line airplane. It's the world's fastest fixed gear, single engine piston aircraft in production - pilots who like to go fast and go in style are going to enjoy the TTx."

Cessna announced they had started production of the TTx at the Sun 'n Fun air show in Lakeland, Florida, in 2012. The TTx is capable of reaching top speeds of 235 kts (270 mph). The aircraft features an optional Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI) system and an operating ceiling of 25,000 feet, both of which allows greater flexibility to plan flights in varying weather conditions. At long range settings, the TTx has the ability to cross the United States with only a single stop. During the development process, the TTx has flown 275 flights and logged 339 hours in the air.

The TTx is the first aircraft to be equipped with the Garmin G2000 avionics system and features a glass cockpit with dual 14.1 inch high definition displays and touch screen controls. The TTx is also equipped with the Garmin Electronic Stability Protection (ESP) system, a feature designed to help pilots keep the high-performance aircraft operating within the normal flight envelope. Inside the cabin, passengers will find a comfortable interior, featuring stitched, leather seats and seat belt airbags.

"Being able to celebrate the maiden flight of the first production TTx is a rewarding experience for everyone who has helped with making the TTx a reality," said Jodi Noah, Cessna's senior vice president of single engine/propeller aircraft. "This program has many passionate followers, and this is a moment we've all been eagerly anticipating. Congratulations to the team for delivering on Cessna's promise, and for taking this next step towards delivering the TTx to the marketplace."

In case you missed the announcement, here is the press release from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)

announcing the publication of five additional Safety Alerts for pilots and mechanics.

March 12, 2013, the National Transportation Safety Board issued five Safety Alerts that focus on the most frequent types of general aviation accidents.

“Because we investigate each of the 1,500 GA accidents that occur in the United States every year, we see the same types of accidents over and over again,” said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. “What’s especially tragic is that so many of these accidents are entirely preventable.”

Each year, about 475 pilots and passengers are killed and hundreds more are seriously injured in GA accidents in the United States, which is why GA Safety is on the NTSB’s Most Wanted List. (http://go.usa.gov/28DF)

A Safety Alert is a brief information sheet that pinpoints a particular safety hazard and offers practical remedies to address the issue. Three of the Safety Alerts focus on topics related to some

of the most common defining events for fatal GA accidents. These include low-altitude stalls, spatial disorientation and controlled flight into terrain, and mechanical problems. The other two Safety Alerts address risk mitigation.

The five Safety Alerts issued today are: • Is Your Aircraft Talking to You? Listen! • Reduced Visual References Require Vigilance • Avoid Aerodynamic Stalls at Low Altitude • Mechanics: Manage Risks to Ensure Safety • Pilots: Manage Risks to Ensure Safety

The NTSB is creating five short videos – one for each Safety Alert – which will be rolled out this spring. The videos will feature regional air safety investigators sharing their experiences and observations of the many accident investigations they conducted as well as advice on how pilots and mechanics can avoid mistakes that can have such tragic consequences.

"GA is essentially an airline or maintenance operation of one, which puts the responsibility for sound decision making on one person’s shoulders," Hersman said. "We are promoting and distributing the alerts to reach pilots and mechanics who can benefit from these lifesaving messages.”

"It is better to look good than to feel good." Fernando Lamas, but with a pair of Oak Street Bookmakers shoes you can have both. Oak Street Bookmakers are hand stitched in the US with waxed thread, and rides on a stacked leather heel and leather sole. This company based in Chicago -makes mocs, boat shoes, and loafers and they truly are great looking shoes with a sort of off-road Emerald Coast look.

Legacy-The son of a cobbler, Oak Street Bookmakers founder and designer George Vlagos apprenticed at his father’s shop where he learned the craft of shoemaking from an early age. Today, George seeks to preserve the heritage of fine shoemaking through thoughtfully designed and attentively crafted shoes.

Craftsmanship-All Oak Street shoes and boots are handcrafted in the USA by shoemakers with over 20 years of experience. The highest standards of production are employed to yield shoes that are as

durable as they are comfortable. Each pair makes use of replaceable outsoles, a feature normally reserved for formal footwear, to ensure a lifetime of wear.

Quality-Oak Street shoes and boots are constructed from renowned Horween Chromexcel leather. Chromexcel undergoes 89 separate processes taking 28 days and utilizing all five floors of the Horween facility in Chicago. Over the past 100 years very little has changed in the formula. Food-grade beef tallow, cosmetic-grade beeswax, marine oil, chrome salts, tree bark extracts and naturally occurring pigments are combined. The mixture is then applied using heat, steam pressure, the hands of craftsman and time. This ultimately yields the soft, supple and durable leather that is used for your shoes or boots.

Restoration has been defined as the act of returning something to a former condition. In terms of vehicles this act is a complex, yet

fascinating, mixture of art, design, engineering and craftsmanship. Few other activities blend such a variety of skills, crafts and organisation as the revival of an aged automobile.

The quality of any given piece of restorative work is determined by three factors; the base upon which the work is established, the workmanship involved and the finished article. The starting point for a renovation will be the strip down of the vehicle. This may take hours, days or weeks depending on the complexity of the car and the degree to which the restorer desires

to catalogue the parts for replacement or repair. A good base will provide the vast majority of parts required to return the vehicle to its former condition, be this concours or preservation.

Workmanship can vary greatly. Even the most esteemed restorers have been known to cut corners despite recommendations from supposed authorities on such subjects. Clearly the only way to know that a job is done correctly is to do it yourself but often this is unrealistic. If the task is outside your skill-set then the knowledge from clubs and experienced owners can be invaluable when finding a third party to carry out work on your cherished motor.

Page 23: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 23

Finally, the finished result – is it what you expected? The quality of a restoration can be very subjective and in many cases beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. For the home mechanic a few rough edges can be an acceptable trade-off for reduced financial outlay. In many cases the hobbyist may take longer to achieve a fine result, but this result can often rival the products of even the most revered of professional artisans due to that personal touch and relationship many have with their automobiles.

Is the finished article appropriate? This question sways dangerously close to the debate on concours vs. preservation. Take, for example, a WWII Willy’s Jeep. Is it fitting for the war wounds of European battlefields to remain or to be removed by the hammer and dolly of a young panel beater oblivious to the sacrifice of the original drivers? This is very much up to the individual footing the bill but will surely divide opinions on whether or not a renovation is high quality… or, indeed, appropriate.

From this brief overview it is clear that whether or not a restoration exemplifies great skill, workmanship and organisation is a subjective matter. All classic vehicles have stories to tell and a restoration is a chapter in its own right. All good stories have a start, middle and an ending and this is reflected in classic rebuilds. A good base, skilled workers and a high class result will tell a good story and a quality restoration.

James is an undergraduate medical student from Comber, Northern Ireland. He became interested in classic restoration while rescuing his grandfather’s discarded Land Rover—his restoration interests have now turned to British Classics.

The starting point for a renovation will be the strip down of the vehicle. This may take hours, days or weeks depending on the complexity of the car and the degree to which the restorer desires to catalogue the parts for replacement or repair.

Champagne Catfish with French Tartar Sauce (Serves 4)

COMFORTsouthern

Page 25: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 25

What You’ll Need:• 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard• 1/2 cup champagne or white wine• 4 - 6 oz. catfish fillets skinned & boned• 1/2 cup all – purpose flour• 1/2 cup cornmeal• 1 tablespoon cornstarch• 1 teaspoon Creole spice• 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt• French Tartar Sauce

Roland, our head photographer and his son had a terrible day of fishing on the lake in Defuniak Springs; sitting in the blazing sun all day without

a single bite. On his way home, he stopped at the supermarket and ordered four catfish. He told the fish salesman, "Pick four large ones out and throw them at me." With a questioning look the sales man replied, "Why do you want me to throw them at you?" With a red face Roland replied, “I want to tell my wife that I caught them—this way I won’t be lying.” To which the salesman added, "Okay, but I suggest that you take the bass--your wife came in earlier today and said that if you came by, I should tell you to take bass. She prefers that for supper tonight." Okay, we confess—we stole that joke; but kudos to the guy who was that cleaver…

In a shallow pan, whisk together the mustard and champagne until well mixed. Add the catfish fillets to the pan and coat them well. Marinate the catfish in the mixture in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

In a blender, combine the flour, cornmeal, cornstarch, Creole spices, and salt. Blend together for 30 seconds to make a fine coating, and then pass the mixture through a sifter into a shallow pan.

Remove the catfish from the marinade, shaking off the excess liquid. Place the catfish in the breading mixture and coat evenly on all sides. Shake the excess breading from the catfish.

Heat a large sauté’ pan with the canola oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering and hot, gently lay the catfish fillets in the oil. Cook the catfish on each side until the crust is golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes.

Remove the catfish from the pan and serve with the French tartar sauce and take a shot of Southern Comfort.

The dishes at Nektar Café and Wine Bar are prepared nightly with the freshest ingredients; giving the option of having your dish either grilled or prepared in the traditional Turkish manner. Chef Kartel will tease and titillate your taste buds with the house Mozzarella Rolls made with the tantalizing combination of sliced tomatoes, basil, garlic, assorted herbs and spices, rolled up with Mozzarella cheese and then drizzled lightly with olive oil and Balsamic vinegar. Though, if you are in more of a salad state of mind the Arugula salad with goat cheese fritters and light citrus vinaigrette could be that perfect combination of rich and fresh. For the more adventurous diners who want a dish that is far from the casual norm, we recommend the

Downtown Dothan is slowly undergoing a transformation; in 2012 a new addition was opened, bringing in diversity and

deliciousness to the Wiregrass area. Nektar Café and Wine Bar was the actualization of a dream of owner and Chef Bulut Kartal; he envisioned a restaurant where delectable food and fine wine could be enjoyed in an elegant atmosphere. Mr. Kartel hopes his establishment will not only aid in the revitalization of the downtown area, but also give Dothan a taste of new cuisine—introducing them to a fusion of Turkish, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean delights.

The Nektar Café offers an atmosphere with clean lines and a modern flare; the walls are adorned with international embellishments. The middle of the establishment hosts the bar--where you can sample from their carefully and skillfully crafted wine selection; the wine list features Chardonnay and Cabernets from Napa Valley. According to Chef Kartel, “I don’t think you’ll find a more extensive wine list in Dothan than ours.”

Beef or Salmon Carpaccio—thinly sliced raw beef or cooled smoked fish, intermingled with boiled eggs, capers, and Parmesan cheese.

Nektar offers more than Turkish dishes--offering a wide variety of Mediterranean main dishes; Moussaka is a delightful culinary indulgence; for those who are not acquainted with Mediterranean fare—Moussaka is to the Eastern Mediterranean as Lasagna is to Italy. It is a dish that is the culmination of beef, eggplant, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and onions—crafting a casserole that is worthy of a second serving. Also, due to popular demand, the creamy favorite--Fettuccini Alfredo-One is making an encore appearance on the Nectar’s menu; this is a timeless dish that is always sure to please. However, a bit of southern influence has snuck into the menu of the Nektar restaurant; shrimp and grits--lightly blackened cream sauce and Gouda grits are served with fresh and colorful julienned vegetables.

For those customers who forego the meat in their dinner, Chef Kartel has prepared a vegetarian version of Spain’s culinary staple--Paella. This vegetarian version of Paella comes with orzo, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, brussel sprouts and flavored with saffron and paprika.

A fine meal would not be complete without

desert; however this is not a problem at Nektar. Coffee paired with a variety of flavored Macaroons, ladyfingers with cocoa and mascarpone cheese; the decadent, airy, dark chocolate indulgence that is the Executive Chef’s chocolate mousse, Black Forest cake, and crème brûlée is topped with caramelized sugar burnt to perfection and served with seasonal fruit—and the deliciousness continues on.

We all know that the real taste of Turkish food will only be found in Turkey; but, Nektars’ has made it possible to experience a taste of this world in this downtown Dothan restaurant. You will not only taste the delicious and exquisite Turkish food at Nektar, but you will also experience the warm hospitality of Mr. Kartel’s Turkish culture with a southern shrimp and grits twist.

In 1998, the BCS put together a formula and format pitting the top 2 teams in the

National Championship game played on a Monday night after the bowl season is complete. It might as well been referred to as “The SEC Invitational”. In those 15 years, an SEC team has been in the game 9 times starting with Tennessee that first year. NO SEC TEAM HAS EVER LOST the championship game! (Correction: LSU did lose in 2011 but lost to fellow SEC member Alabama). The SEC has now won the last 7 in a row with Bama in a search for its 4th in the last 5 years. Since Auburn also won it in 2010, the state of Alabama should change from the “Yellowhammer State” to the “Crystal Ball State”. The true strength of the SEC was illustrated by renowned bookmaker, Danny Sheridan last year before the national championship game. He stated: “6 SEC teams (Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina) would all have been favored in the game.”

This is the last year for the BCS championship series as we know it. In the fall of 2014, there will be a new system that takes the “Final Four” teams in

a 2 game playoff (1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 with the winners facing off) for the championship. The SEC just had a Brer Rabbit moment. They just got thrown in the briar patch and got what they wanted all along. This new format gives the SEC the chance for even MORE domination. If for a moment, anyone with half-a-brain thinks the SEC won’t have at least one and probably two teams in the playoff, I can set you up on a blind date with Manti Teo’s girlfriend. The new system should allow for the loser of the SEC championship game to remain in the top four where they belong. If this format had been in place in 2004, Auburn would have gotten their chance for the trophy. Instead, the Tigers will go in the history books as the ONLY undefeated team from a BCS conference to get shut out of playing for it all. CAN ANYONE CHANGE THE SEC HIERCHY THIS YEAR? There has never been a more dividing line in the East and West divisions than this year. Both sides have an overwhelming TOP 3 and BOTTOM 4. In the East, the top 3 are South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. None of the others have a cutdog chance of moving up. In the West, it has Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU at the top. If Auburn or Ole Miss has a couple of upsets, either could slide up in place of LSU because of the Bengal Tiger’s brutal schedule.

ALABAMA: After opening up against Virginia Tech in Atlanta, the Tide has an open date before playing Texas A&M in College Station. This will be the game of the year in the conference. The Tide defense will not allow Johnny Football to scramble around and beat them this year. If Bama wins there, they will roll until the annual showdown with LSU in Tuscaloosa. Again, having an open date before this game will allow Nick and Kirby time to remind the Tide about the last time the Tigers played there. Drawing Kentucky from the East instead of South Carolina, Georgia or Florida is huge. Prediction: SEC WEST CHAMPIONS. 12-0.

TEXAS A&M: After being the darlings of the nation last year, the Aggies are going to get everyone’s best shot this year. Everybody in the nation with a TV will be watching the showdown with the Tide on September 14th. Like Bama, A&M does not play South Carolina, Georgia or Florida. They also have an open date before playing at LSU in November. Prediction: 2nd in the WEST. 11-1.

LSU: The Tigers open in Dallas against a good TCU team. Bad news: they have to play Georgia (A) and Florida (H) from the East. Good news: their open dates fall before Alabama (A) and Texas A&M (H). Prediction: tied for 3rd in the West with the seat warming up for Les Miles. 8-4.

AUBURN: With wins against Mississippi State and Ole Miss, they could be the surprise team in the West and start rolling the wires at Toomer’s Corner. Gus Malzahn put together a first class coaching staff of recruiters. Open dates fall before Ole Miss and before the Iron Bowl. Playing at LSU and Texas A&M will be brutal for a young team. Prediction: tied for 3rd in the West (depending on the Ole Miss game). 8-4.

OLE MISS: Everybody is jumping on the Rebel’s bandwagon after going 7-6 last year and signing a top 10 recruiting class. As my friend Lee Corso says: “Not so fast.” The Rebels play at Texas and have to travel to Tuscaloosa. They don’t have to play the Big 3 from the East but playing back to back games at Auburn and Alabama is going to be tough. Prediction: tied for 3rd in the West. 7-5.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: The Bulldogs open on the road against Oklahoma State and later play South Carolina and Texas A&M on the road on consecutive weekends. The 2 key games for Dan Mullen to stay employed: Beat Auburn on the road and beat Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl. Prediction: 6th in the West and a new coach in Starkville. 6-6.

ARKANSAS: New coach Brett Bielema is trying to bring a power running game to Fayetteville like he had at Wisconsin. The Hogs play South Carolina at home but have road games against Florida, Alabama and LSU. He will get it done in time. Prediction: 7th in the West. 5-7.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Steve Spurrier is entering his 9th year in Columbia with his best team yet and the top player in the league in defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The early East favorite will be the winner of the Georgia game in Athens the 2nd week of the season. They have the schedule advantage of avoiding the Big 3 from the West. Playing Clemson the week before the SEC championship game will be a challenge: Prediction: SEC EAST CHAMPIONS. 11-1.

GEORGIA: The Dogs were 5 yards away from keeping Bama out of the championship game last year. Opening the season on the road against Clemson and back home the next week against South Carolina is a make or break 2 weeks. They play LSU at home but the key game will be Florida in Jacksonville. Prediction: tied for 2nd in the East. 10-2.

FLORIDA: Will Muschamp’s team has an early showdown at Miami and later travels to LSU in October. In November, they play Georgia ( Jacksonville), Vandy at home then at South Carolina. As always, the Gators close the season against Florida State. Team will be better than its record. Prediction: tied for 2nd in the East. 9-3.

VANDERBILT: The opening game against Ole Miss will

set the tone for the season. Road games against South Carolina, Texas A&M and Florida will make it tough for the Commodores to repeat their 8 win total from last year. An open date before Georgia at home is important. Prediction: 4th in the East. 7-5.

TENNESSEE: Playing back to back September road games against Oregon and Florida will be difficult for new coach Butch Jones. In October, the Vols host South Carolina then travel to Alabama the next week. Ouch! Prediction: 5th in the East. 5-7.

KENTUCKY: After opening on the road at Western Kentucky with its new coach Bobby “Motorcycleman” Petrino, the Wildcats play Louisville (H), Florida (H), South Carolina (A) then host Alabama in a five week period. This is why they

Page 33: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 33

change coaches every 4 years. Prediction: 6th in the East. 3-9.

MISSOURI: The Tigers October schedule: at Vandy, at Georgia, Florida at home, then South Carolina at home. They don’t play the West Big 3. Doesn’t matter. Prediction: 7th in the East and a coaching change. 4-8.

HOW WILL THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PLAY OUT? Alabama will lock up the West a week before South Carolina plays Florida for the East. Alabama plays a young Auburn team on November 30th. South Carolina plays a potential top 10 Clemson team on November 30th. Bama beats South Carolina 30-10. MVP: Amari Cooper, Alabama wide receiver.

WHO WILL ALABAMA PLAY IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME? STANFORD? Will lose to either Oregon or UCLA. OHIO STATE? Went undefeated last year with zero pressure. Urban will get sick again thinking about facing Saban. OREGON? First year head coaches don’t make it this far. CLEMSON? Will be Clemson and have a crazy loss. FLORIDA STATE? Having to replace too many NFLers and coaches. LOUISVILLE? Could go undefeated and be left out because of a weak schedule. The answer: TEXAS A&M? The Aggies will run the table after losing to Alabama and finish 2nd in the final BCS rankings. Giving Nick Saban and Kirby Smart more than a month to prepare for Johnny Manziel again is just not fair. Alabama

has been here before; A&M has not. Alabama will win its 3rd straight 35-7. MVP: Heisman trophy winner, A.J. McCarron. To the SEC haters, be careful saying: “Wait til next year.” In 2014, ALL 4 slots in the playoff could be SEC teams.

Royal EnfieldThe excitement of this week began

with a marketing meeting with Terance Mathis—you may know

him as the wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons and the new Vice President for Levine Family Racing and NASCAR #95. The excitement did not end there--Wednesday and all night Thursday I was in the company of Ken Brown, COO of Brownstone Restaurant and American jazz musician Tom “Bones” Malone; with a nickname like that it is clear that he is a trombone man; though his musical skills do not stop there, as he also plays the trumpet, tuba, tenor sax, baritone sax, flute, piccolo and several other instruments. Tom gained his fame as a member of “The Blues Brothers” band, the CBS Orchestra, and also heading the house band for “The Late Show” with David Letterman. Friday, it was a quick trip to Louisiana to attend the beautiful wedding of the now Mr. and Mrs. Damon Becnel that was held at the Acadian Village in Lafayette. However, before I could make it to the nuptials I called in a favor to my friend Jay Patel to find some sanctuary in Biloxi for the night—a man has got to sleep sometime.

Jay’s nephew, Chirag operates the Travel Lodge hotel in Biloxi; the remarkable room that was waiting for me took a quick second place when—to my surprise a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle was sitting in the lobby. This remarkable machine was the same one that Chirag’s father purchased in India in 1982; the bike is now at home

with the family in Biloxi in a place of honor in their house. The story behind this treasured family bike began in 1988, there was a taxi driver strike and Chirag needed to make it to the airport; he grabbed the bike and said “If she starts, she starts…” knowing he would miss his flight if it didn’t. The bike roared into life and instantly became Chirag’s “lucky charm”—this was my first introduction to Royal Enfield Motorcycles.

After admiring Chirag’s Royal Enfield, I decided to investigate Royal Enfield motorcycles; however before I looked into their past I decided to look into the present—the new Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500. This bike puts a whole new definition to cruising in Himachal (India). Perhaps one of the most anticipated models from the Royal Enfield stable; the Thunderbird 500 was developed to enhance the pleasure of leisure motorcycling amongst touring enthusiasts. Combining distinctive “black” styling with a powerful 500cc Unit Construction Engine and a 27.2 bhp power output being fed through an electronic fuel injection system- the Thunderbird 500 makes a distinct statement on the Indian roads.

At the launching of the Thunderbird 500 during the 2012 Auto Expo, Mr. Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “When we launched Thunderbird in 2002, it was a one-of-its kind model on the Indian roads that redefined the cruiser segment.

Page 36: Black Tie Motorsport

36 BLACKTIE MOTORSPORT

With the long running success of the Thunderbird 350--the Thunderbird brand has built its own cult following amongst the Royal Enfield customers as a comfortable touring motorcycle. With the launch of the Thunderbird 500, fitted with the UCE and a host of design enhancements, Royal Enfield has again upped the ante in leisure motorcycling which we have been pioneering for over half a century in India. With touring enthusiasts forming the core of our customer base, the Thunderbird 500 gives them more power, comfort and style for long distance riding.”

The visual appeal of the Thunderbird 500 is marked by the ‘black’ engine, the first of the several styling elements that characterize the motorcycle. The seat has been completely redesigned to suit the new foot peg positions; it now opens using a lock mechanism, accessible through the side panel. True to its design concept as a more “touring friendly” motorcycle, the separately mounted pillion seat can be removed to accommodate luggage. The handle bar too has received changes for better reach and ergonomics. The pillion grab rail is an all new pressure die cast component and lends to the modern design of the motorcycle, bungee hooks provide the much needed bungee points to tie luggage. Other small styling elements that a keen enthusiast will

notice include the Royal Enfield Logo on the all new foot-pegs, newly designed mirrors and an LED tail lamp. The redesigned front end with its 41mm thick forks greatly improves handling while adding to the muscularity of the Thunderbird 500. The instrumentation includes two digital trip meters, allowing riders to keep a track of total trip mileage as well as intermediate mileage between fueling. The speed and engine rpm are shown through tastefully designed analogue clocks, housed in all new twin pods at the front; the main ignition lock also functions as a central steering lock. The inclusion of hazard lamps in the switch gear is a first for a motorcycle manufactured in India. The new headlight with a 55W projector lamp for its low beam and a 55W halogen bulb for the high beam addresses the biggest challenge of night time visibility faced by most motorcyclists while cruising on the highway. Naturally, the lighting is at its brightest with the high beam on, working in combination with the projector lamp gives ample spread and penetration on the road. The high rise handlebars, forward placed foot-pegs and a low seat height enable a rider to cover distances comfortably for longer periods of time. Add to this, the large 20L fuel tank that does away with the need to stop frequently for fuel and highway cruising will no longer be the same. Another

distinctive styling element to the Thunderbird 500 is the placement of the tank cap; placed asymmetrically on the top right hand side of the tank, instead of the conventional central mounting. To make for the total package, the stopping power has been increased with the addition of a disc brake at the rear that is mounted on the new improved oval section swing arm. The braking system is supplied by Bybre, a fully owned subsidiary of Brembo.

Chirag’s Royal Enfield Bullet is more than a quarter century old now and most people who see it do not know what it is, some take picture--all admire; however only Aayush (Chirag’s son) will someday own and ride his father’s lucky Royal Enfield Bullet.

About Royal Enfield:The oldest motorcycle company in existence, Royal Enfield made its first motorcycle in 1901. A division of Eicher Motors Limited, it has been a pioneer of powerful four stroke technology since 1955 in India. With its manufacturing base in Chennai, India, the company offers a variety of models catering to the needs of the traditional segments, the enthusiasts, the leisure bikers and the urban youth.

Introducing the Bentley Muslanne

Page 41: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 41

Bentley—just the name, brings about images of class and sophistication;

and the brilliant interpretation of their new flagship will not disappoint. Featuring unique 21 inch wheels and a ‘sport’ setting for the suspension and steering—this new design is looking to be an instant classic. However, the look would not be complete without ‘Flying B’ wing vents a beautiful large tilt-opening glass sunroof and an electronically operated bottle cooler option--complete with hand-cut lead crystal champagne flutes.

The Mulsanne is a pure example of the Grand Touring Bentley; combining coach-built elegance and hand crafted luxury with immense power and sportiness that together offer the world’s most exclusive driving experience. With a 0-60 mph sprint time of just 5.1 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds) and a top speed of 184 mph (296 km/h) the 505 bhp always offered thunderous levels of performance for an ultra-luxury ride. Now, for customers seeking an even sportier look, feel, and character

to their Mulsanne, Bentley is introducing the Mulliner Driving Specification-- new 21-inch, light aluminum alloy wheels with race derived, titanium fasteners, bright-finished rims and 265/40 ZR21 tires; underscore the Mulsanne’s potent yet elegant stance while providing even more dynamic handling.

Inside the Mulsanne’s sumptuous cabin Bentley’s styling team have created a modified, driver-focused look and feel for the Mulliner Driving Specification. In keeping with the tradition of sporting Bentleys--the leather on the front and rear seats as well as the door casings features an intricate diamond quilting pattern which is complemented by an indented leather headlining.

For confident, spirited driving, the accelerator and brake pedals of the Mulliner Driving Specification are made from drilled alloy. Beautifully crafted, each one of the raised grips on the pedals is individually polished. As a finishing touch to the cabin, Mulliner tread plate plaques are applied to the vertical surface of the driver and front passenger door sills for an extra elegant touch.

In addition to the new Mulliner Driving Specification, Bentley is announcing enhancements to the specification of the Mulsanne’s optional feature specification. All Mulsanne models may now be specified with an

exquisitely detailed, Bentley- designed, luxury bottle cooler and rear cabin storage area with space for two full-size Champagne bottles in a canted position, allowing opened bottles to be placed back into the cooler.

With one touch of a button, the frosted glass door quietly slides open to reveal three hand blown and hand-cut lead crystal champagne flutes, displayed beautifully by the white LED accent lighting. These flutes have been exclusively created for Bentley by the renowned British designer, David Redman of London and resonates the racing spoke design of the Mulsanne’s 21” 5-spoke Sports alloy wheel.

The cabin of the Mulsanne is whisper-quiet; utilizing the latest double-glazing and sound proofing technologies to isolate it from the hectic world. However, should you want to let the outside in, there is now the option of a large tilt-opening, tinted glass sunroof in the front cabin. It floods the cabin with light and gives an extra dimension of space, providing additional ventilation while avoiding the security risk of open windows.

This new Bentley Mulsanne’s details and elegance cannot simply be summed up in only a few short lines—so please continue reading about this spectacular car in the next edition of Black Tie.

In April the Peanut Festival fairgrounds in Dothan, Alabama--with the help of promoter Ronnie McGlothlin and Chris Mendez--

hosted the highly anticipated second annual Toadlick Music festival.

The crowds gathered early Thursday with great anticipation of the performances that were scheduled; Brandon Self & The Outlaw Revival, RTFO, Caylee Anna, Travis Denning, Favorite Sons, Barbed Wire Creek, Derryl Perry, Corey Smith, Colt Ford, Calynn Green, and Donica Knight

Friday and Saturday the all-stars showed with the redneck woman-Gretchen Wilson,

entertainer of the year Luke Bryan, along with Jake Owens, Dancing with the Stars winner Kellie Pickler, Chris Young, Thompson Squared and legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd —just to name a few; even the inclement weather on the first day was not enough to hold back the fans.

Most of the reviews posted on the Internet by fans that were at the concert have been glowingly positive. Many of the fans noted that Three Doors Down (lead singer Brad Arnold, old guitar tech Chet Roberts, drummer Daniel Adair and bassist Todd Harrell) are still putting on a high-energy show that people of all ages can enjoy.

I LOVERACING

Keeping the Winning Streak Going

By: Alabama Charlie

Page 49: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 49

Black Tie Motorsport is one of those magazines that at some point will cover racing events for everyone, from the

casual enthusiast to the serious competitor. In this issue I got the privilege to spend time with friends and champions--new and old. I even rubbed elbows with Bo Jackson, the greatest athlete of all times and race legends like Hellio Castroneves. I met 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Terry Borcheller with the Burton Racing team at the track and found Terry again the following week at Fat Clemenza's in Destin, Florida.

Back in April I covered the Grand-Am Series, the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, the IZOD Indy Series and the Firestone Indy Lights at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama and The Mitty at Road Atlanta, for the first time with press credentials!

My preferred race in the series was the Grand–Am Road Racing that returned to Barber Motorsports Park for the 11th annual Porsche 250. The Rolex Sports Car Series showcases the purpose-built Daytona Prototypes and the

Page 50: Black Tie Motorsport

50 BLACKTIE MOTORSPORT

production-based GT cars during the Porsche 250.

My favorite to win was Dion von Moltke with team Muehiner Motorsport in the Porsche GT3.

I had a chance to meet and talk with rising star Dion von Moltke; Dion had widen his incredible 2013 season by adding a victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring to his recent win in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Asking Dion what you do with two Rolex watches, his simple answer “…you give one to your father...”

Muehlner Motorsports and Dion had an especially strong day in Birmingham at Barber Motorsport and the Porsche 250. The No. 18 Porsche GT3 was first driven by Eduardo Costabal and finished by Dion von Moltke. The Coral Gables, Florida driver started at 20th and pushed the car into the lead for eight laps

following the race’s only caution; the team fell from the top spot when they pitted; Muehlner’s team would finish the race seventh just behind Magnus Racing.

A Florida International University student--Dion von Moltke has built his career in Grand-Am and the American Le Mans series on a solid foundation of international Karting and Formula Car racing. Dion races under the South African flag; his parents are from South America and while he was born in Texas, he has resided in Sydney and Los Angeles before moving to his current home in Coral Gable, Florida. Dion began his racing career at the tender age of 13, racing karts in Southern Florida. Dion won several championships at the local and state level before moving up to the National and International level; even participating in World championship karting events in Italy. Since then he has steadily progressed through

Page 51: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 51

-Dion von Moltke

several professional racing series, becoming a very successful and respected professional race car driver that obtained wins at Skip Barber, Grand-Am, and the American Le Mans series. Dion is also a highly popular driver instructor--focusing on all aspects of peak performance, and has developed a coaching program called “Perform 360”.

2012 Career Highlights: 1st Place finish: 24 Hours of Daytona, GTC Class, and 1st Place finish 12 Hours of Sebring, GTC Class and 1st Place finish, Palm Beach Grand Prix. Dion von Moltke is currently sitting second in the 2013 GRAND-AM Rolex Series GT

standings and working a full-time drive with Flying Lizard Racing for the 2013/2014 season.

“Wins at Daytona and Sebring open some doors and I'm really excited to finally announce I will be driving for Flying Lizard Motorsports this year in the American Le Mans Series! It is an honor to be driving for them and I can't wait to get to work with Brian Wong at Long Beach! My goal is to get back in a car and work on keeping this winning streak going."

Then it was off to Road Atlanta which has been home to the Classic Motorsports Mitty since its inception, and there is no better place or time to enjoy a motorsports daydream. What an amazing weekend to be at Road Atlanta with racing legend David Hobbs--who was the grand marshal--who has run nearly everything: Can-Am, Indy, Formula 1, Formula 5000, Trans-Am, NASCAR, IMSA GTP, IROC and so much more.

In recent years, he has anchored America's Formula 1 TV coverage.

Originally called the Walter Mitty Challenge, this classic event has become an icon in historic and vintage racing; anywhere from 250 to 400 competitors climb into the cockpits of historic race cars each spring. With drivers going head to head, while racing around Road Atlanta’s beautiful 2.54 mile, 12-turn North Georgia road circuit.

Page 52: Black Tie Motorsport

52 BLACKTIE MOTORSPORT

The exciting races included everything from 1950s-era production and sports car models with a top speed of 120mph to former Trans-Am, NASCAR and 90 era’s that can reach speeds of 240 mph. The Mitty competitors put on a fantastic show for all spectators, from the average car enthusiast to the fanatical race team.I decided to hang with David Smith, owner of Smith Motorworks in Panama City and found him underneath the hood of Mike Smith’s Blue Coral. David actually brought two cars to the Mitty--a Porsche Turbo 930 Slant nose and the Hugo Boss Porsche 951, owned and driven by Race Smith.

As I walked up to Smith Motorworks 18 wheel rig I could hear Dave saying over and over “I love racing – I love racing…” It seemed that the Porsche 930 had disk brake problems and there was only one set of brakes in stock for

Page 53: Black Tie Motorsport

BLACKTIE 2013 FALL 53

the British built Porsche to be found. When the brakes finally arrived after being FED-X to Road Atlanta the bolt patterns did not match up. Dave looked at me and asks if I would drive? My first time driving in a race! Excitement overtook me—but alas it was not meant to be—Dave just needed a ride to a machine shop 20 miles from the race track.

By race time with all hands on deck, Smith Motor works race crew was able to have both cars geared up, tuned up, and fueled up for the start of the race. Race Smith had a great showing in the Hugo Boss Porsche 951 with the help of the Individual Throttle Body designed by Extrudabody’s President Kevin Thorton--out of Freeport Florida--and the 930 Slant Nose Turbo driven by Mike Smith was the talk of the fans.

With road accidents being the leading cause of death among teenagers, there is much to be learned from race drivers

in spotting potentially dangerous situations, and developing the car controlling skills to avoid a crash.

HILLIARD, Ohio ( July 17, 2013) – Takuma Sato, who first sprung to prominence in his native Japan in 2004 when he became only the second Japanese driver ever to score a podium finish in Formula 1 – and this year earned his first IZOD IndyCar Series victory when he guided the legendary A.J. Foyt’s #14 ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt Enterprises Dallara-Honda DW12 to the checkered flag on the streets of downtown Long Beach, Calif. – has become the latest top-line driver to lend his time as an Online Driving Instructor for the Road Racing Drivers Club’s highly acclaimed www.SAFEisFAST.com website. Questions for Sato can be sent via SAFEisFAST.com from now through Sunday. His answers will be posted beginning next Monday ( July 22).

Sato, 36, was a gifted bicycle racer in his teens but always aspired toward a career in auto racing. He took his first steps toward that goal in 1996 when he bought his first kart. Just over a year later, Sato entered and won Honda’s Suzuka Racing School scholarship. While the top prize was a season of racing in the Japanese Formula 3

Championship, Sato had his eyes set on a broader goal and instead traveled to Europe where he raced firstly in Formula Vauxhall Junior and then Formula Opel. In his first full season of racing, in 1999, Sato finished sixth in the competitive EFDA Formula Opel Euroseries. He also entered the final few rounds of the prestigious British Formula 3 Championship and won the Asian F2000 support race at the Macau Grand Prix.

After winning four British F3 races in 2000, Sato dominated the 2001 title-chase with 12

wins and added victories in the Masters of F3 at Zandvoort in Holland and the Macau Grand Prix. His magnificent run of success earned him an opportunity to graduate into F1 with the Honda-powered Jordan team with which he earned his first F1 championship points, appropriately, at the Japanese Grand Prix where he finished a rousing fifth. He was appointed third driver for the factory backed BAR-Honda team in 2003 and was promoted to the race team for the traditional season finale at Suzuka, Japan, where he again recorded a top-six finish.

Sato’s (and BAR’s) best F1 season was in 2004 when he claimed his first podium finish in the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis and added seven more top-six finishes. He joined the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2010 and came close to winning the Indianapolis 500 in 2012 before crashing out while attempting to take the lead on the final lap.
