Mise en scene

Setting:The setting used in this video is a school however it is shot indifferent locations around the school, this is veryconventional of pop music videos. The location we see is of theschool building itself, this automatically shows the viewerthat the video is based around teenagers which is also thetarget audience for most pop artists.

The second location they use is the library when they arestudying, this scence begins with the lyrics: 'full of honey'.This scene shows the room full of students which makes it

easy to relate with as the majority of viewers will be in school.

The third location used is a dorm room. The room alsomakes it easy for the target audience to relate with the

artists as the room is full of typical items such as a bookcaseand a desk.

Highkey lighting is used throughout the video, this is typical ofpop music videos as it helps to create a happy and cheerful

atmosphere. This is evident in the second verse when they arewalking down the hall towards the boy.

Another example of high key lighting is towards the end whenthey are singing the lines: 'falling in love' as they are walking

down the hall in slow motion, as the students around them aresmiling, dancing and chucking paper into the air. This helps add

to the atmosphere as everybody is elated and shows themhaving a good time.

COSTUMES &

PROPS

The costume they wear at the start of the video is very generic and ordinary. However, after they cast the spell the costumethey wear is more glamorous

and bright and therfore more appealing to the target audience. This isbecause it stands out more and will give the viewers more confidence to wear

what they want and be theirselves. The props used in the video are very relative to the target audience, they are

seen walking around with books for class.

CAMERAWORK

An establishing shot is used at thestart of the video, it introduces thelocation for the audience. It againallows the audience to relate becauseit is a school and a place they would befamiliar with, as the target audience isteens.

A close up of each member is used, it shows them lip synching which is aconvention of pop music videos. It also allows the viewers to see theiremotions and empathise with them. Their emotions at this part of the songare happy and excited as they have the found the book of magic which willhelp them grab the attention of the b0y they like.

Page 6: Black magic analysis

A low angle is used which shows thecamera looking up at the artists. Thisalso shows the emotions of the artists

but from a different point of view. Itallows the audience to feel as if they are

in the video and as if they are lookingdown at them. Low angles are typicallyused to show power and status, it couldbe argued that it has been used because

now they have found the book theyhave gained power and are now in

control.

A long shot is used to show the audience the artist's costume after theyhave cast the spell. It also shows their stance and how they are now

confident because they have all the power and attention.

EditingA dissolve is used to transitionbetween the scene in the room andwhen they are walking down thehall. The new scene starts with thelyrics: 'if you're looking for misterright'. The transition is smooth andemphasises that they havetransitioned too.

Shot reverse shot is used when they are staring at the guy. It first shows him and then cuts to the girl'slooking at him in awe and then back to the guy. This would appeal to the target audience as they would beable to relate and empathise with them as they have a crush.
