Bits&PiecesNewsletter of the Mountain High HOAPresident’s
Corner
It is always amazing how the pine trees know when summer ends.
One day you are sitting on your deck enjoying a good book in the
sun and the next day fall arrives and the pine trees start dumping
their pine needles at an alarming rate. I am sure we all groan at
the thought of picking up all of those pine needles and wish we
could sell each one for a penny a piece. But we can’t complain too
much. Fall is one of the nicest seasons of the year in Bend and Mt.
High looks so beautiful with the changing of colors of the Aspens,
Birches, Maples, etc.
The Board continues to work on the important issues we face in
Mt. High. We have no major breakthroughs to report at the moment,
but continue to look for answers and ways to adapt to the new
realities. The pool has been closed and the contractor has been
working on finishing the details that were not finished when we
opened in June. The Pickleball season has come to an end. It was a
very successful season and many of our neighbors took advantage of
the opportunity and enjoyed learning a new sport.
I did not get much response to the question in the last Bits n
Pieces regarding the idea of introducing more activities in Mt.
High. I will leave the idea on the table and we can re-visit it at
any time.
Some neighbors noticed that the corner where Mt. High loop meets
Mt. High Drive is now bereft of trees. The City of Bend is doing
some major work on the water pipes under that section which is an
important artery to all three villages. There will be work on that
corner for a few weeks so please drive carefully. Make sure you
turn off your irrigation systems by October 15 so they can be
properly winterized.
Herb ArathoonThe next board meeting will be held on Tuesday,
October 18, at 6:30 pm
Bend Golf and Country Club
Water Conservation & Sustainable Landscape Committee Report
Janet HibbardAs mentioned in last month’s report the most critical
part that we discovered during this Committee’s work is the
irrigation system. We recommended hiring an irrigation expert to
prepare an irrigation master plan and at the special meeting on
August 30 the Board had a chance to review the proposal and ask
questions of David Olsen of Harper Houf Peterson Righellis Inc.
(HHPR). Mr. Olsen has already started on the common area irrigation
system inventorying and verifying with the City where things are.
Mr. Olsen will talk to Willow Creek and Aspen village
representatives regarding the village’s system.
The ponds are like sieves and John Williamson is getting more
information on alternative and comparative approaches to handle the
ponds by the Country Club entrance and in Aspen Village and Willow
Creek’s pond and creek.
Things are moving along. If you have any questions you may
contact your village representative for the committee:
Alpine: John Williamson, Ray Halm, and myself
Aspen: Don Leo Willow Creek: Holly Hutchins
Attention Alpine and Aspen HomeownersImportant action steps for
irrigation system winterization.• No confirmed date from The City
of Bend but GTI expects the winter
blow-outs to take place October 17—21• Homeowners are asked to
make sure all individual irrigation system
controllers/timers are turned OFF BY NO LATER THAN OCT. 15.•
When winterization or blow-out begins, representative from GTI
will
locate individual valve boxes on each property and manually open
to allow for blow-out. If a valve box is not visible and cannot be
located the valve(s) within that box will not be blown out. If the
homeowner is at home, GTI will use the homeowner’s
controller/-timer to complete this service.
• All individual irrigation system controllers/timers and valves
should remain OFF and CLOSED throughout the winter.
• Homeowners will be notified by GTI next spring as to when they
can turn on individual irrigation system controllers/timers. This
is critical to a successful startup of the irrigation system next
spring.
• If any questions, or if you need help, direct them to the
offices of NWAM at 617-3863.
Attention Snowbirds & Those Who Won’t be home Mid-April(1)
Make sure your controller/timer is OFF before you leave. This
is
important so your sprinklers do not start before GTI has flushed
debris from the lines before all sprinklers can go on. We need
enough pressure on the line for a successful start up.
(2) Make ARRANGEMENTS with someone to turn your irrigation
system controller/timer ON in April once GTI notifies us so your
sprinklers will start watering your yard before you return.

Robert and Colleen are happy to be here in Aspen Village where
they are close to their daughter and family. They have the one
daughter here and a son in North Carolina and another son in
Honolulu with their families. Five grand children and eight great
grand children altogether.
Robert is from Scotland where he spent 6 years in the British
Navy during WWII and was on an LSD at Normandy. He got out in 1946
and since then he and
Colleen have lived in several states and have travelled
throughout the world.
Colleen has a Masters degree in art and is prolific in oils and
watercolor. She says she intends to keep painting as long as she
can.
Getting to know and have Robert and Colleen in our village is
quite and interesting and delightful treat.
Bobbie Long bought her new Aspen Village home last spring, and
immediately began an extensive redecorating job. While the work was
being done, she stayed with her good friend Janet Millen, whose
home is in Alpine Village. Bobbie has enjoyed many visits with
Janet and those experiences helped influence her to move to Bend.
The two are long-time friends who share a love of and talent for
china painting, which Bobbie has showcased in her new home. They
also get together weekly with a group of Mountain High neighbors
who do their china painting together. Bobbie likes to knit and is
interested in watercolor painting.
Prior to arriving in Bend, Bobbie lived in the San Fernando
Valley, in Chatsworth, California. She and her husband
also lived in Sedona, AZ for a number of years. During her years
in southern CA, Bobbie owned two businesses; a beauty parlor, and a
fabric store. Her husband was a retired Los Angeles Police
Department detective. Bobbie has a daughter living in Shingle
Springs, CA and a son who retired from his job with the Los Angeles
County Sheriff’s department and lives in Sunriver. Two of her four
grandchildren live in Shingle Springs, one is in Mississippi, and
one lives in Bend. She also has two great-grandchildren living in
California.
Bobbie finds the slower pace and the very friendly people in
Bend and Mt. High to be wonderful additions to her beautiful new
home and community.
Welcome to our community.

TheftI thought that I would pass on to our neighbors that a
visitors car, parked in our driveway overnight, was broken into and
some items stolen.
The theft occurred during the night, between 10.00pm and 7.00am
the next morning, and it’s apparent that the thieves drive or walk
through our community looking for such an opportunity.
