Program Requirements for CEGEP Students

impOrTANT NOTES:

Any CEGEP student with a DEC is eligible for admission to all programs of study at Bishop's University.

Certain programs of study require specific CEGEP courses in order to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in 90 credits (3 years).

Students who have not taken the prerequisite courses at the CEGEP level may take these courses once at Bishop's. they may be added to the student's program, thereby increasing the minimum amount of required credits to graduate.

Only programs for which specific CEGEP prerequisites exist are listed below. All other programs do not have entry-level prerequisites.

Admission averages vary from year to year. For the 2014-15 academic year students were admitted based on a minimum IB diploma score of 26, a minimum high school average of 73% (or equivalent), or a minimum CEGEP "R" score of 23. Please note that these scores are for reference only. Contact our office for the latest admissions information.

Business

Our case format courses and seminars, and interactive classroom settings provide a unique opportunity for students to discover their strengths and transform themselves as they hone their presentation and writing skills in a supportive learning environment.

Focus on how to apply real-world situations to business education, using a variety of approaches including a challenging mix of lectures, case format courses and seminars as well as visits from guest speakers and Executives in Residence. The Williams School of Business offers a Co-operative Education Program, which allows Business students to combine their academic studies with integrated work experience. Bishop's very active commerce society, BUCS, enables students to become involved in a variety of business-related activities, case competitions and workshops.

Students in the Williams School of Business work toward either a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) or a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Business (B.A.). The B.B.A. program provides a solid foundation in core business subjects but also allows students to gain specialized knowledge in one of seven business concentrations. The B.A. program provides the same foundation in core business subjects but allows students the flexibility to combine their business courses with a major or minor in another field.

Business Concentration Descriptions


AccOuNTiNg:

Learn how companies, investors and governments compile, present and use financial information. Courses such as managerial accounting, taxation and auditing prepare students to become professional accountants and provide the basis for a variety of other business designations (C.I.M., C.B.I., etc.). the program also prepares students to study at the CPA level.

ENTrEprENEurSHip:

Understand the entrepreneurial process required to turn an innovative idea into a new business venture - a skill set with tremendous value in the job market. Gain valuable hands-on experience with local entrepreneurs through the Dobson-Lagassé Entrepreneurship Center.

FiNANcE:

Master the principles of financial management and gain knowledge of investment management, capital budgeting, capital formation and risk hedging. Prepare yourself to pursue an exciting career in corporate finance, banking, portfolio management, securities research and financial planning. Students who complete the required accounting courses are qualified to write the first level C.F.A. (Chartered Financial Analyst) exams immediately upon graduation. Compete for a position as a Portfolio Manager with our $500,000 SEED Portfolio.

gENErAl buSiNESS mANAgEmENT:

Students will specialize in a broad range of traditional business functions such as change management, interpersonal skills, innovation and entrepreneurship. Students also have the flexibility to customize a concentration that meets their particular interests and needs.

mArKETiNg:

Study one of the fastest changing and most innovative aspects of the business world. Develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary advertising and sales techniques, as well as the socio-environmental forces influencing marketing activities.



HumAN rESOurcES:

Courses such as human resource management, industrial relations, training and development, and organizational behavior teach students how companies attract develop and maintain a competitive workforce. Various options for certification as a human resource professional are available throughout Canada for students who complete this concentration.

iNTErNATiONAl buSiNESS:

Combine your Business courses with classes in Political Science, and International Economics to gain an understanding of global organizational structures, business strategies and management practices. International Business students go on exchange and have the opportunity to take courses in Modern Languages to learn how to work with different cultures, economies, currencies and government policies. Gain first-hand knowledge of current issues and challenges that global managers face.

Arts Administration

You will benefit from an outstanding internship program giving you the chance to collaborate with renowned performers, artists and technicians. Our Centennial Theatre is home to fantastic programming, featuring artists from all over the world and every walk (or dance step!) of life. Be a part of their season as an intern. Define your artistic vision, hone your project management skills, and leave your mark on campus.

Students begin the program with an equal number of core courses in Business and in one of the creative arts. As they proceed with their core studies, they undertake the 12 required credits in Arts Administration. Although the program deals largely with the Non-Profit sector, the For-Profit sector will also be discussed. At the end of their program, students will be provided with an internship and will be placed in a variety of cultural venues consistent with their disciplinary focus. These organizations can be located anywhere in the world and often opens doors to future employment.

from its creation to decimation. you will focus heavily on the civilizations of Greece and rome and study their literature, mythology, history, art, archaeology, and language.

We offer everyone with an interest in ancient Greece or Rome the opportunity to learn Latin, the language of Roman emperors and Christian popes, and Greek, the language of philosophy, tragedy and the New Testament. Want to be onstage in your first month on campus? Come to Bishop’s! With two student-run theatre festivals and multiple studio and main stage productions each year, there is something for everyone. the department exposes students to all facets of theatre

practice and study and provides them with the flexibility to orient their program towards a particular field of study: Dramatic literature and Theatre History, Performance

(acting, directing and playwriting) and Production (technical, stage management and design).

We believe our wholistic approach to theatrical training best prepares students to find success in the contemporary arts scene.

By the end of their final year, students will have had ample opportunity to work on the department’s season of productions in the Turner Studio Theatre and the Centennial Theatre (including at least three productions in the Studio, one main stage production in Centennial during the second semester, the New Plays Festival and the student-produced Theatre Activ). A number of students will also have had the opportunity to become Theatre Assistants for Centennial Theatre, receive an honorarium and be responsible for the proper running of the facilities operations.

cONcENTrATiON iN culTurAl AND mEDiA STuDiES:

Cultural products and practices in any particular historical period – whether they be contemporary science-fiction films, the rock ‘n’ roll music of the 1950s, or bear-baiting in the Elizabethan period – are worthy of the same kind of careful study that has traditionally been reserved for literature. Use interdisciplinary approaches to investigate how our ideas of both the world and ourselves are built from a rich interplay of representations in a wide variety of media. In consultation with your English faculty advisor, a student may opt to complete an Honours in Film, Media and Cultural Studies.

cONcENTrATiON iN Film STuDiES:

Understand the medium that has arguably had the greatest impact on popular culture in the last hundred years. Film students develop a rich awareness of the historical development of the medium and the theoretical frameworks that critics have used to try to understand how film represents the world and affects audiences. Study Hollywood, independent, foreign, and avant-garde films from a wide variety of perspectives, as film courses are offered by many different disciplines at Bishop’s (Drama, Music, Philosophy, religion, Modern Languages, Sociology, etc.) you also have the opportunity to develop your skills as a screenwriter. think about the centrality of storytelling to human culture. By studying narrative in a variety of popular forms and media, from oral folk stories, through novels, plays, and short stories, to contemporary film, television, graphic novels, and video games, students develop a rich understanding of narrative form. Experience the limitations and possibilities of different media and of the social functions and effects of storytelling. An Honours in Literature or in Film, Media and Cultural Studies, is also available to students in Popular narrative.

Challenge yourself and read a diversity of British, Canadian, American, Irish and Postcolonial literature. By reading both older and contemporary texts, students develop a rich understanding of the importance of cultural and social context and of the ways in which people in different circumstances have organized their thoughts and their lives. In consultation with their English faculty advisor, students in this concentration may enter the English Literature Honours program.

Specialize in the study of English Literature, with the goal of continuing to study the subject at the graduate level. the Honours provides students with a thorough understanding of English literary history, of the diversity of English literary cultures and of the range of theoretical frameworks from which literature can be studied. the Department of Fine Arts offers a major concentration in Studio. the degree earned is a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), which provides students the opportunity to combine their artistic

Studio work includes drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography. All areas are taught by an instructor who is an active practitioner in his or her field. Purpose-built studio facilities in the Molson Fine Arts Building provide space for medium size classes offering individual attention to students' work and a group atmosphere that is congenial and supportive.

A portfolio is requested for Fine Arts applicants entering the Studio concentration. While not an admissions criterion, portfolio review allows for students to be placed in courses of the appropriate technical level and it can lead to introductory courses being exempted. The portfolio should contain 10 pieces of contrasting styles of original work. A CD or paper portfolio can be submitted to the attention of the Admissions Office.

Art History

Through the methods and concepts of art history, students learn the ‘visual’ language of images as they acquire knowledge and understanding of all forms of visual arts ranging from earliest cave paintings to latest new media installations. Students' conceptual horizons are developed through courses on the theory and criticism of art, and the methods and concepts of art history. As Art History is a unique and wide-ranging discipline encompassing aspects of history, philosophy, religion, psychology, sociology, gender and cultural studies, our courses can also found within the departments of Classical Studies, Sociology, and History.

Using diverse approaches, art is critically analyzed in the larger social, cultural, institutional, and ideological context of its production, display, and reception. Liberal Arts

There are numerous opportunities for students to develop their own community, as students are highly encouraged to pursue their passion for human culture and pair this program with a major in another discipline. As much learning as possible takes place in highly interactive settings through our seminar style teaching and courses. Don’t forget to sign up for the many program trips to museums and theatres in New York, Boston, Montreal and Toronto.

The Liberal Arts Foundation Courses, considered the heart of the program, engage with a key theme in the history of Western civilization through interdisciplinary and historical approaches. Students enrolled in the Liberal Arts program are welcomed into Bishop’s with an introductory seminar (LIB 100) and culminate their experience with a final year seminar. All students in the Liberal Arts program are encouraged to complete a second Major in a discipline of their choice. Many courses may be counted towards the requirements of both Majors. Philosophy

Classes are small (seldom larger than 15 students after the first year), so there is plenty of time and space to discuss themes with professors and fellow students. Most courses are offered in the seminar format attentive to the particular interests of students, focused on primary sources and designed to invite students to take a leadership role in presenting their own ideas.

Our students graduate having studied closely great works of thought, having learned how to communicate subtle and difficult ideas to others, and having gained extensive experience in technical writing, argumentation and public speaking. –and been influenced by –the political, artistic, intellectual, social, and economic aspects of cultures throughout history.

Religion

Explore sacred texts, traditions, rituals and beliefs of the world’s major religions. We explore the different ways faith is expressed and practiced, the historical and cultural contexts of religions and their texts, as well as the interconnections between religion and other areas of human life (such as philosophical thought, the psychological, social, political, and economic dimensions of existence, and the presence of religion and religious symbols in literature and fine arts).

Our objective is to examine religion, not to espouse its practice or non-practice. Our approach is not faith based. Students from all disciplines are welcomed in Religion courses, and students in Religion are encouraged to take courses in other related fields. To encourage creative and independent thinking, we emphasize the study of primary texts, rather than simply reading what other people have written about those texts.

The solutions for many of the challengeswe face in the 21st century such as climate change,

genetic engineering, food production and the search for alternative energy sources are rooted in the

investigations of science. Studying science at Bishop’s means direct access to your professors, research

opportunities beginning in first year, and plenty of summer research assistant positions. Fully renovated

laboratories equipped with excellent scientific equipment promote our commitment to hands-on learning.

Master the fundamentals of experimental Biochemistry. Our program provides students with well-equipped laboratory facilities, first-hand experience with state-of-the-art

laboratory equipment and close instructional contact with professors.

In addition, students participate in research with the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Lennoxville, and the Université de Sherbrooke, in it’s associated medical research hospital.

The Biochemistry program is coordinated through a committee of chemists, biochemists and biologists and offers three program specializations: General, Molecular Biology, or Chemistry. Each stream provides a strong background in both Biology and Chemistry, applicable to students looking to continue in the Veterinarian, or Medical fields. All streams offer an Honours program, which rigorously prepares students for graduate studies or professional schools.

Hike or canoe to undertake field work in local bogs, lakes, rivers, mountains, marshes, hardwood forests and meadows. Bring this hands-on experience to modern laboratory

facilities including an aquatic and terrestrial animal rooms, a greenhouse, growth chambers, incubators and centrifuges, and an athletic performance lab.

Biology

Biology is defined as being the science of life. Address questions as minuscule as the factors controlling the expression of a single gene involved in obesity, and as wide as changes in the fly population over the last 20 years of climate change. Choose to specialize in Health Science or Biodiversity & Ecology. Over the course of the program, acquire the knowledge base as well as the quantitative and practical skills needed to address issues in the biomedical and biological realms.

The Health Science concentration prepares students for graduate school in fields such as cell biology or physiology, and is usually the choice of students hoping to enter medicine, dentistry, or other health-related professional programs. Many of these students also enroll in our Pre-Medicine Double Major. Students benefit from the proximity of the Sherbrooke University Medical School and can undertake research and internship projects in collaboration with professors at this research-intensive teaching hospital as a part of their Bishop’s degree.

The Biodiversity & Ecology concentration is for students interested in wildlife biology, ecology, plant science, and/or the environment. It prepares students for employment or graduate studies in these varied environmental and organismal areas of Biology. Bishop’s University is located near a variety of habitats including bogs, lakes, rivers, mountains, marshes, hardwood forests and meadows. Gain a scientific understanding of the natural environment and its physical and chemical laws. Model various forms of human impact on the environment, predict outcomes and search for scientific and technological solutions. Undertake studies for pollution, waste,

Environmental Science

Study the basic sciences such as physics, chemistry and mathematics to the earth sciences: geology, atmospheric and climate science, oceanography, and glaciology.

The solutions to environmental problems cannot come from science alone. Ultimately, these solutions involve social and political aspects which is why our Environmental Science students take courses and often double major in Environmental Studies and Geography, Political or International Studies, and Business. It is the duty of the environmental scientist to understand and formulate the problems as completely and rigorously as possible, to search for technical avenues of solution and to provide scientific understanding and technical advice to politicians and national and international organizations.

As reported on Cnn, the Best Job of 2014 goes to the Mathematician. As the language of the sciences, Mathematics allows scientists to quantify, model, understand and predict behavior in an enormously diverse range of phenomena.

Mathematics

Bishop’s also likes to think of Mathematics as an art, creatively studying patterns and problems and formulating solutions. This is Mathematics applied to today’s world.

Mathematics covers a wide range of disciplines including algebra, analysis, combinatorics and discrete mathematics, and differential equations. Mathematics students are joined by students from many disciplines, especially in first year courses, as math provides a strong foundation for studies in business and the natural sciences.

Many Mathematics students combine their studies with a Major or Minor in another discipline. In recent years these have included Business, Economics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, History, Music and Philosophy – the choice is truly unlimited!

The highest level of specialization is Honours, which prepares students for direct entry into graduate work leading to a Master’s or Ph.D. degree. All Honours students have an opportunity to study independently and thus develop their reading and problem solving skills.

The Honours program prepares students for direct entry into graduate work in Physics (leading to an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree). The Major in Physics prepares students for industry, education and, on completion of a qualifying year, graduate work in Physics. The Major program has sufficient electives to allow a substantial number of courses to be taken in another discipline to obtain a Minor or even a second Major in a related discipline such as Mathematics or Computer Science.

The Master of Science program is designed to give students a deeper appreciation of Physics while at the same time preparing them to become independent researchers. Graduate supervision is available in a wide variety of disciplines, including astrophysics, theoretical cosmology and gravitational theory, theoretical condensed matter physics and particle physics.

Pre-Med: It's not just for hard-core science students! We want to make sure that all students are aware of this great opportunity to diversify their educational options and open

doors to future career paths.

Pre-Medicine Double Major

The Pre-Medicine major allows students to complete all the necessary pre-requisites to apply to medical schools while at the same time pursuing a liberal education. The required and optional courses correspond to the entrance requirements of Canadian and most American medical schools but also address the requirements of most related professional schools (such as dentistry or physiotherapy). Students receive extensive instruction and hands-on experience in our modern laboratory facilities, including a new athletic performance lab.

Students must register in a separate, primary major as well as the Pre-Medicine major and complete all the requirements of both majors in order to graduate. Students can select their primary major from any discipline offered at Bishop’s.

• BU professors use the small class sizes to focus on practical, hands-on experience inside and outside the classroom. Students are given first- hand experience in the use of these facilities and are encouraged in every way possible to develop their capacities for independent work.

• Collaboration with the CHUS (the teaching and research hospital of Sherbrooke University) provides opportunities for experiential learning, summer research projects, and honours projects, as early as the second year.

• The Johnson Science Building was fully renovated and installed new high-tech equipment in 2011 for a total re-investment of over $8 million.

Economics is concerned with the fundamental principle upon which human activity revolves – our wants are unlimited while the resources available for their satisfaction are not. Any economic system must determine what is to be produced from these limited resources, and how the resulting output is to be distributed amongst its population.

The International Political Economy program, offered jointly by the Departments of Economics and Political Studies, offers an excellent opportunity for students to study the interaction between political institutions and international economic system, including international trade and finance, multi-state cooperation in solving world economic crises and the global balance of power.

A degree in Economics allows graduates to pursue varied careers in areas such as economic forecasting, economic policy analysis, financial markets and institutions, and public policy.

Hands-on fieldwork and research projects play a great role in understanding environmental changes like climate change, acid rain, ozone depletion and water conservation. Our students are encouraged to positively shape the future of our environment.

What is the role of government, politicians, citizens and private industry in shaping accepted political norms? How is Canada’s political system different from the

American system? The European Union?

Political Studies

Take national politics one-step further and explore worldwide relations, the impact of globalization and the emergence of a new international economic and political order.

Political Studies provides students with a working knowledge of society and how decisions are made. Governments, politicians, leaders in private industry and ordinary individuals function within a framework of accepted political norms, e.g. notions of justice, freedom, rights and duties. Over time, these received norms are challenged by conventional methods such as voting, political parties, interest group lobbying and protest movements; or the challenge may be by militant or revolutionary means such as radical Marxism, fascist organizations or discrete acts of terrorism. Political Studies systematically examines and presents these phenomena.

A Degree in Political Studies may lead to further specialization in a M.A. or Ph.D. program. It is also preparation for professional studies in law, teaching, journalism and public administration.

We typically think our lives are determined by our individual decisions. What if this isn’t the case? What if our individual lives and choices are really the outcome of the social world around us? Sociology examines the external social world to see how

it impacts and structures the way we live.

Sociology

Stated most simply, Sociology is the study of society. Learn what it means to ask sociological questions and to consider the way society is structured when examining issues such as global inequality, gender and mass media communications. Students are provided with theoretical and methodological tools and substantive insights, which can assist them in understanding social life, social organization and action.

Our Department offers small class sizes, dedicated professors, and a flexible structure that allows students to focus on the topics or themes that capture their interests. this concentration goes well beyond traditional Sociology. Use sociological insights from economics, history, politics, and post-colonial study to better understand inequality and opportunity in today’s world. Understand the current economic and cultural globalization as new in some dimensions, and as a continuation of previous relationships in others. Gain a deeper understanding of the inter-connections across the globe and your own place on the planet in terms of cultural identity and economic opportunity. Sociology students and their professor have participated in development projects in Malawi, Africa.

crimiNOlOgY, lAW AND SOciAl pOlicY:

Who has jurisdiction when a crime is committed at sea or in outer space? How are issues like female genital mutilation dealt with in different countries? What influence do demographics such as gender, income and age as well as social policies have on crime? These questions are examples of the issues covered in the Criminology, law, and Social Policy Concentration. The Department strongly supports students who complete Directed Independent Studies and participate in the Experiential Learning Internship/Placement program. For example, upper-year students may have the chance to complete an internship at a transition house for parolees in exchange for academic credit.

mEDiA, TEcHNOlOgY AND cONTEmpOrArY STuDiES:

What is the future of the Internet? E-mail? Social media? How will these affect my future life and career choices? How is work in every sector likely to be intricately intertwined with knowledge of media and communications technology? These are among a few of the important questions that we study today in Media, technology and Contemporary Cultures – a rapidly growing and important area of social knowledge.



GENDER, DIVERSITY AND EQUITY STUDIES:

Explore the intersecting and interlocking dimensions of social status that shape peoples’ life experiences. Gender, race ethnicity, class, sexual orientation and ability are categories that are socially constructed over time and place. these relational categories are what produce differences among social groups and individuals. Explore these differences and how they are transformed into diverse and unequal identities and relationships. If you are thinking of a career in policing, social work, community action, government service, education, the healthcare sector - wherever you work with people - this is a concentration to consider.

FAmilY, HEAlTH, AND cOmmuNiTY:

Is Medicare sustainable? Where do our health care dollars go? Does increasing access to private health care help or hinder the public system? Considering the social and cultural aspects of health is a critical component of this concentration. We therefore address all age groups, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and many more social groupings with this in mind. Students interested in working in the human service area as a health care worker, social worker, child care worker, or working with ethnic, religious or other communities will find their place in this concentration. this program also offers a solid foundation for pursuing further studies in the Sociology of Health, Medicine, and in areas of social inequalities.


Sport Studies is an integrated, multidisciplinary program drawing on the expertise of faculty in Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Business and Biology Health Sciences.

the program provides an intensive study of sport and exercise in society.

Sports Studies

Sport Studies is designed to encourage students to adopt an encompassing perspective, ranging from local to global dimensions of sport and exercise. Consequently, it exposes students to the social, biological, political, business and economic aspects of sport in sport in society. Sports Studies provides opportunities for students to obtain practical experience in local schools and clinics.

Students can choose to specialize in any one of three concentrations: • Athletic Development• Business and Society• HealthIt is also possible to combine any two concentrations.

Students completing the Athletic Development concentration may have completed the requirements for coaching certification (via Sports Québec and the NCCP) levels A, B, and C. The Sports Studies Program Committee has applied for this coaching certification for its program, and is presently anticipating approval in time for 2015 graduation.
