The Heber Memorial Schoolbecame a full-fledged high school in1864 and sent its pupils for theMatriculation Examination.
In 1873 the School was raised to aSecond Grade College and in 1882 itbecame a First Grade College. It wasthen known as SPG College.
It was the first college to beestablished in Tiruchirappalli.Honors courses in History andMathematics were introduced in1925.
The College came to be known asBishop Heber College in the late1920's and its Diamond Jubilee wascelebrated in 1926 under thepresidentship of the Governor ofMadras, Lord Goschen.

The College now offers 11 UG,14 PG and Several Diplomacourses of study besidesresearch programs leading toM.Phil. and Ph.D.
The College has been accreditedwith 5 stars by the NationalAssessment and AccreditationCouncil on 21st May 2001. Now,it is graded as A+
The University GrantsCommission, New Delhi andBharathidasan University,Tiruchirappalli, grantedAutomated Autonomy to ourCollege during 2004-2005.
