JUNE 2018 BIRDS OF A FEATHER - FLOCK TO SYDNEY Local resident, Doug Lange has a real passion for budgies, so much so that he recently attended the 44th Australian National Budgerigar Championship Show in Penrith, NSW on the 27th May 2018. This show is the ‘holy grail’ for budgie breeders Australia wide with 81 budgies being selected to go from each state. A pre-selection in Adelaide occurred a week before the Show with Doug entering 3 of his birds. There are at least 350 birds in this pre-selection show and Doug was lucky enough for one of his birds to be selected to head to Sydney for the Championships. The 81 birds from SA are then put on a plane in boxes to head to Sydney. A box which contains 40 birds costs $233 for the flight. They arrive at the show 5 days before judging which allows time to have them prepared. Once they arrive they are put in cages to be fed, watered and then have time to settle down after their flight. The following day is then spent shampooing, hair drying and rubbing baby oil into their beaks and legs to give them shine. On Show day Doug arrives at 6am along with the other two Bird Carers for South Australia to get the birds ready for the big event.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER - FLOCK TO SYDNEY
Local resident, Doug Lange has a real passion for budgies, so much
so that he recently attended the 44th Australian National Budgerigar
Championship Show in Penrith, NSW on the 27th May 2018.
This show is the ‘holy grail’ for budgie breeders Australia wide with 81
budgies being selected to go from each state. A pre-selection in
Adelaide occurred a week before the Show with Doug entering 3 of
his birds. There are at least 350 birds in this pre-selection show and
Doug was lucky enough for one of his birds to be selected to head to
Sydney for the Championships.
The 81 birds from SA are then put on a plane in boxes to head to
Sydney. A box which contains 40 birds costs $233 for the flight. They
arrive at the show 5 days before judging which allows time to have
them prepared. Once they arrive they are put in cages to be fed,
watered and then have time to settle down after their flight.
The following day is then spent shampooing, hair drying and rubbing
baby oil into their beaks and legs to give them shine. On Show day
Doug arrives at 6am along with the other two Bird Carers for South
Australia to get the birds ready for the big event.
4 judges, including one from Germany then carefully look over the birds to pick
the winners. Doug had entered a “Dilute” breed which ended up coming 17th in
his class. During the past ten years he has had two National Winners with his Light
Green and Crested budgies. This means the birds are Australian Champions.
Winning birds then have the opportunity to be auctioned off for breeding with
some fetching over $3000 for a pair. Doug has previously been offered $2000 for
one of his birds but did not accept the deal.
Doug has around 150 budgies
with a large set up created in
his back yard just for the birds.
There is a breeding room, a
large range of aviaries and
nesting boxes which Doug has
all made himself.
He is part of the Pt Pirie
Budgerigar Club who regularly
meet for events.
The time has come for Doug to clear out some of his
Sandra’s story There’s no shortage of studies telling employers a diverse workforce is good for business because it adds people with different life experiences and points of view. Any employer still wondering what that really means could learn a lot by meeting Sandra Bach, who recently joined Maxima answering calls from potential customers in the Disability Employment Services business. Sandra was born with clubfeet and a knee abnormality, but she gets around the office without any fuss with the help of a walker and is making a great contribution, answering enquiries from jobseekers two days a week. She’s great at her job, not just because she relates so well to those she is talking to, but because she is engaged and loves helping others. At face value, Sandra is just like other great employees. But when you understand what she has overcome, and get to experience her positivity about life, you understand that a diversity of life experiences really does make the workplace richer. When she was born in 1962 Sandra’s parents were told she would never walk. But walk she did. When she was 17 doctors wanted to amputate her legs. She told them no, which was a gutsy call for a teenager up against the medical establishment of the 1970s. And as an adult, her doctor told her she would be confined to a wheelchair by the time she was 50, which she refused to accept as well. Her condition is painful and she has needed drugs throughout her life to manage her condition but there’s no way Sandra will let her disability stop her enjoying life. And after raising two children it wasn’t going to prevent her getting back into the workforce and finding a meaningful job. Sandra’s first break came in 2010 when she was given a job as a receptionist. But she was caught up in a round of redundancies and found it extremely hard to find another job. “I applied for lots of jobs, not saying that I had a disability. But when I showed up with my walker, the interview was effectively over before it even began. And it’s so just competitive out there. You are up against lots of people with certificates in computing and so on.” But her persistence eventually paid off when she struck up a conversation at a disability expo with Maxima staff. “They listened to me and they cared. That’s the great thing about Maxima.”

MAITLAND MARKETS UPDATE
The Market opened on Sunday 20th May for a visit from the Triumph
Car Club. They were a very friendly group and we enjoyed their
company. They were keen to purchase some of our craft and
produce and exchange patterns of our goods. We have had many
visitors from around Australia and most of them comment on the
quality of our market which makes us quite proud.
NEW ITEM TO COME THIS MONTH: It is called a Microwave Bowl
Buddy— a shaped pot holder fitted to a cereal bowl (whether you
cook porridge or reheat food) saves your fingers or accidents with a
towel or tea-towel whilst getting the hot bowl out of the microwave.
Thanks to the Men’s Shed for fixing up our carpet sweeper. It is a very
important tool for the market.
We always have a warm atmosphere in this weather. One couple
called in for 10 minutes and stayed for 2 hours talking to our volunteers
and locals over a ‘cuppa’. My thanks to the volunteers who willingly
come and help deep the market a special place for locals and
