BIRDING TRIP TO ECUADOR August 3rd
– September 25th
2005
by Herman “Billy” David
Introduction
I visited Ecuador for two reasons. I could get a good preparation from my friends Hans and Raf and
because I had the opportunity to have company from a Belgian birder, David, who has a lot of experience
with birdtrips (65 so far) in the world. Although I traveled wth him for only 11 days, I learned a lot about
bird watching outside of Europe. I think for us both it was a bit strange because David had already seen a
lot of birds in Ecuador and for me, everything, really everything was new..
I didn't had some experience with bird watching outside of Europe and this was actually my second bird
trip ever. It was some kind of test for me.. I wanted to see as much as possible common species from the
northern part of Ecuador and also get some target-species. I had a planning but I followed it only for about
6 days from the 53.
Flight and visa
For the 25 minutes during domestic flight Quito – Coca, I had to pay US$ 60 single. This flights are
operated by ICARO. US$ 25 departure tax is charged upon leaving Ecuador via an international flight,
don’t forget like I did.
Tourists from most countries may get monthly extensions up to 180 days. Tourist visas are extended on
the last valid day. Immigration officials will stamp either 60 or 90 days in your passport when you enter. If
you know you need more than 60 days, be sure to tell them before they stamp your passport. Also, if you
want to stay longer than 90 days you will have to get an extension or obtain a visa. To learn more about
visas, check with your local Ecuadorian consulate or your embassy in Ecuador for details pertaining to
your citizenship. In Quito they are obtained at the immigration office on Isla Seymour 1152, between Rio
Coca and Tomás de Berlanga. In Guayaquil go to the immigration office on Avenida Pichincha and
Aguirre. Ecuador requires a valid passport from all travellers, as well as proof of return to your home
country or onward journey, though this is rarely checked.
Car rental
David arranged a A-class car (Chevrolet Corsa 5-doors) by AVIS at Mariscal Sucre International Airport
(Quito) and paid US$ 715,20 for 19 days including all taxes, assurances (Collision Damage Waiver) and
unlimited mileage. Good to now is that all car-rental companies are just outside the airport. It is advisable
to book in advance like he did via www.cheapairlines.com . Drivers must be fully licensed and 21 or older.
Cars drive on the right. Petrol fluctuated around US$ 0,50 per litre.
Most of the roads we travelled on were in very good condition, the unpaved road in the Tandayapa Valley
is also good passable. Only the road between Hollín (at the main junction to Quito and Coca around KM
24) and Tena and the road to Yanacocha is very bad.
Public transport
Ecuador’s public transport is much better than in Belgium and quite fast. So, in my opinion it is the best
way to travel through the country. It is very cheap and you can ask to the bus-driver to stop everywhere
(“Podria pararse aqui por favor”). To stop a bus along the road, you only have to wave with your hand.
For a half an hour you pay 0,5 US dollar, for an hour 1, 2 hours 2, 3-4-5 hours 3, … US dollars. Be careful
in the beginning because they will ask you a bit to much. You can avoid this by giving the money yourself
before they give you a price. On this site you’ll find some information about prices:
http://users.ugent.be/~hmatheve/hm/ECUADOR05.htm .

Health and safety
Travellers need to be particularly cautious with respect to what they eat and drink and to insect bites.
Hepatitis A and Typhoid Fever are the two most common diseases transmitted through food and water.
Yellow Fever and Malaria are the most common diseases transmitted by insects.
www.1cover.co.uk/countries.html health section provides an overview of these and other medical
considerations for those travelling in Ecuador. Health is always an issue of concern for people travelling
abroad. Most travellers stay healthy throughout their journeys and return home as fit as ever.. In the jungle
pay attention on the sand-flies. I was a victim of Leishmania in my neck (more information on the internet,
21 days hospital when I was back home). Make sure you take enough insect-repellent with you, sand-flies
don’t like that.. Normal you have little to worry about if you educate yourself and take sensible
precautions.
Ecuador is considered one of the safer countries in the Andean Region, though its recent economic woes
have caused crime to increase significantly. Ecuador's urban centres, especially Quito and Guayaquil are
large cities and like most any large city in the world, are generally more dangerous than the countryside.
Be also very careful when you travel to the NW-coast (Esmeraldas, Quininde,..) and the Colombian
border.
Money
In March 2000, Ecuador's official currency changed from the Sucre to the U.S. Dollar. All bills are true US
currency. There are some coins that the Ecuadorian Government has minted themselves that are not US
coins. One dollar coins, which are actually US coins but are not generally known in the US are quite
common. It is wise to check bills you receive, especially larger denomination ones to assure they are not
counter fit before accepting them from anyone (banks included). Credit cards and travellers cheques are
generally accepted in the cities. You should ensure you bring enough money (no bigger bills than 20 US
dollar!!). In my opinion, ‘Banco Guayaquil’ was the most easy to use (Santa Domingo and Quito).
Language
Ecuador is a country were English is not spoken (widely) except in some Lodges. So, at least a
rudimentary command of Spanish will be helpful. Some of the younger generation in the bigger cities
speak a little English and genuinely tried to help when we had language difficulties. The only words I knew
at my departure here in Belgium were ola, serveza and buenos dias.. And I survived.
Time zone
CET Time minus 6 hours during our winter time and minus 7 hours during our summer time.
The Galapagos are one hour earlier than the mainland.
Weather
On account of Ecuador's varied regions and because of its location directly atop the equator, it is an
excellent travel destination year-round. Rather than rotating through four seasons, most of Ecuador
experiences oscillating wet and dry periods. The general weather trends for each region are as follows:
El Oriento (Amazon region) normally has a warm, humid and rainy climate. The average temperature
varies from 23° to 26° C (72 to 80 F). The drier season is generally November to February but varies by
region.
La Sierra (Andean Highlands), though on the equator, is generally cooler than most people would expect.
The climate in the Andes varies according to the altitude and the time of the year. In Quito the
temperature ranges from 7° C (55 F) at night, to 26° C (78 F) at noon, averaging 15° C (64 F). The wet
season of the eastern Andes and the dry season of the western Andes is in the northern summer.
La Costa's (Coastal lowlands) climate is usually very warm with temperatures averaging 25° C (76 F) to
31 C° (90 F) during the year. The rainy season (December to May) is warm and very humid. The dry
season is less humid but still a little muggy.
Page 3
3
The Galapagos islands enjoy warm and dry weather year-round, with an average temperature of 28º C.
(85 F).
Electricity
Electric appliances operate on an alternating current, the same as the United States - 110 volts, 60 cycles
(Hertz) AC. So, American-styled two-pin plugs are most common. This means that European travellers
need to bring an adapter for laptops, cameras, battery-chargers, etc.
Permits and access
No permits were needed at any of the places that I have visited. Only a entrance fee of US$ 5 is charged
to visit Bellavista Lodge (if not staying), the Yellow-house trail at Mindo (2 days valid), Yanacocha,
Guango lodge, Milpe or the Four Rivers (Finca KM 106.5). For visiting (if not staying) Tinalandia or
Cabañas San Isidro, you have to pay US$ 10.

The local hotels are very cheap, the hotels from western people are more expensive.. Take note that
access to the trails is not allowed at Tandayapa if not staying in the lodge!

Napo, night at lodge.
Tue 13 September: Yuturi (Limon) Birdwatching along the Limon trail, alias
the musquito trail..

was perched 30 meters away from me, sitting in a trail eating from a sloth!
Wed 21 September: Yuturi (Rio Napo islands) Despite some efforts, I was to sick to be
patient for the antpitta and some more target-species on the islands..

boattrip.. In the evening some good hours on the canopy-tower in Yarina.
Fri 23 September: Yarina/Travel to Quito Only birding on the canopy-tower

decided to stay in the town. I really was exhausted and now I know why.
Sun 25 September: Quito Travel Home..

Use the trip-report from Frank Rheindt or the book from Heijnen for the places without maps.
Papallacta
Papallacta is a small roadside village situated along the road between Quito and Baeza, 58km from
Quito. The pass itself is of course the highest point you cross and there is a shrine for the “Virgin del
Paramo". There is also a large sign indicating the Quito area. Coming from Quito just after this sign a dirt
roads goes out to the left and forks immediately. Both roads produced some specialities. The right road
leads to the antennas (2km). Along this road one should find most of the paramo species and
seedsnipes. Be careful with altitude-sickness!! Maybe it’s wise to take a taxi to the antenna’s and come
back downhill on foot if you haven’t got a car. When you go from the pass ca. 2,3 km in the direction of
Papallacta, you see a Polylepis-forest on the left-hand side just before a bend to the right. The trail on the
right side of the forest leads to the western lake on my map. From the second view-point we saw Andean
ducks and Silvery grebes. The forest-patch is famous for Giant conebill and we had also some Black-
backed bush-tanagers (both taped in from the road). Driving a few kilometres further in the direction of
Papallacta, you’ll pass a second lake. The so known Papallacta-lake or eastern lake on my map. There is
a dirt road along the lake which offered us moderate birding (Paramo pipit and Andean gulls for example).
A few hundreds meters before Papallacta, we had Band-winged nightjar on the ‘cliff’. Driving into
Papallacta you’ll pass a bridge and an obvious pipeline. Just before that bridge a little trail goes up to the
left. In the first meters it is overgrown but it soon comes out on a more open area. Rufous Antpitta was
present in the little stream just before the open area and Paramo tapaculo’s were easily seen in the dry
river-bend. The road on the left to the thermal baths just after the pipeline is well signposted. Others had
some nice birds there but we didn’t find them (there must be a Polylepis-forest over there with Masked
mountain-tanager).
Page 9

Guango
The Guango lodge is situated along the main road from Papallacta to Baeza. When you come from
Papallacta, on the right side there is a large black-and-white sign with only "Guango" on (previous sign ca.
0,5km (?) in the direction of Papallacta is yellow I think with some more text). I spent 2 afternoons at the
feeders and the close area to the lodge, one night and one full day over there (great beds, good food and
beer present). At the feeders there was Mountain Avocetbill foraging (third feeder from the left, be patient!)
while good numbers of other hummingbirds were attracted by the feeders. White-capped dipper was
sitting on the east side from the ‘bridge’ on my plan. Best trail was certainly the 1. At the beginning I had
some Spinetails and Brush-finches. At the clearing along this trail (at the two obvious junctions follow the
right path, pass the fence 2 times and an old farm) I heard (different call than Blue-and-white swallow!)
and saw some Pale-footed swallows. The area seemed also good for Mountain-toucans but I couldn’t find
one.. Maybe try at the second junction the left trail. Along the road I had some good flocks with as
Page 10

highlights Plush-capped finch (easy to tape-in), Gray-hooded bush-tanager and Buff-breasted mountain-
tanager.

San-Isidro
Coming from Baeza, ca. 500 meters after a little bridge over a stream, a bend to the left and a bend to the
right about 200 meters before the small village Cosanga a dirt road splits off on the right side. There is an
obvious sign to Cabañas San Isidro (with a drowning from the mystery-owl) and 2 signs of other lodges.
The lodge itself lies 2-3 km further along this dirt road on the left. A map and bird list are available on
request at the office. Just a few hundred meters before arriving at the entrance gate of the Lodge there is
the so called Log Trail starting on the right (slippery pathway, not allowed to tape..). Along the Cock-of-
the-Rock-trail friends of me recorded Peruvian Antpitta about 50 meters before the obvious shelter. When
you go from the cabins in the direction of the Cock-of-the-Rock-trail, after 50m, just after the Bamboo, a
new trail starts to the right. Along this trail I saw Bicolored antvireo and other birders saw more Peruvian
antpitta’s over here.. The mystery-owl I had for 3 nights near the cabins. A stunning male Gorgeted
woodstar was present at the feeders. For the rest, I didn’t ‘score’ big birds. Along the dirt road to the lodge
you have a chance to see White-capped tanager! I would recommend to stay at this place for 2-3 days
(when you see it’s good weather in the southern mountains, go to Huacamayos).
Page 12
12
Huacamayos-ridge
We drove from Baeza to Tena and stopped at the shrine (where the road turns to the left) on top of the
pass, which is c. 6km further than Cosanga and 28km from Baeza. On the right hand side there are some
obvious antennas (you can’t miss them). There is a short trail going to these antennas, which immediately
forks. The left one (so called Inca trail) goes down to the pipeline, but we didn't go that far though, and got
most of the species along this trail. I really love this place! Black-and-chestnut eagle, Brown-billed
scythbill, Slate-crowned antpitta, Barred antthrush, Dusky piha, Chestnut-breasted wren and Bronze-
green euphonia were my best species here. I would recommend at least 2 days over here (when the
weather is bad, go to San Isidro..)
Loreto-Road
From Quito I took a bus to Tena and got of at the main junction (direction Coca) around the so called KM
24 between Cosanga and Tena. From there I took a bus to Coca and got of at ‘Restaurante Suzanita’ (on
the left side , ca. 20km (?) from the junction, just before the second river). This is a place where you can
eat quite good, much, and cheap for a traditional Ecuadorian restaurant (especially her soup is great!
Shame that they don’t sell beer..). The people who work there are also very friendly and nice (speak only
Spanish!). I slept there for 3 nights. The maximum capacity is 2 (maybe, in extremity 3 persons), but it’s
better to go alone. You may not expect any comfort (please mail me to ask what I mean if you really plan
to go there)! If you pass by, please give them the greetings from ‘Billy de Belgica!’. When you start from
the restaurant and go in the direction of Coca, it’s good birding for 3 km. along the road until you get in the
very open. I had a huge flock of big birds (Oropendola’s, Toucans, Umbrellabird, Cock-of-the-rock,..) along
this part of the road and also a flock of ca. 200 tanagers passing by (couldn’t make good views of the
flock..). In the river I had my only Torent duck. When you come from the restaurant and pass the river, in
the first bend to the right on the left side you have a little house. After this house there starts a very muddy
but good trail along the river. Here I saw Blue-rumped manakin, Coppery-chested jacamar, Musician wren,
Ecuadorian piedtail (few times), Buff-tailed sicklebill, Black-billed treehunter and heard a few Short-tailed
antthrushes and Plain-backed antpitta’s. When you go from the restaurant in the direction of KM 24, you
wouldn’t expect good birds in the first 2-3 km. Your expectation is good! But at a certain moment, where
you have some good forest-patches on the left and right hand side, it can be much better. Here I had a
huge mixed flock with as highlight 4 Rufous-naped greenlet’s. Also a few solitary Yellow-throated tanagers
were seen here! After 6 km (counting from the restaurant, going in the direction of KM 24), you have a big
rock-wall. Just after the biggest bend to the right, there starts a very, very good trail to the left (a few
slippery meters going up, after 70m passing an antenna). I was to stupid at that moment to ignore the
trail.. I certainly go back there before it’s to late! If you stay at the restaurant for a longer time, you can also
ask Herardo to show you the ‘sendoro’ that goes into the mountains. Along this difficult and muddy trail
you wouldn’t expect good birds.. Wrong! I saw there: Scarlet-breasted fruiteater, White-crowned manakin,
White-crowned tapaculo, Olivaceous woodcreeper and last but not least, Buff-throated tody-tyrant (best
bird from the trip?). For the rest, I can say that I had mixed feelings about Loreto. A lot of deforestation..
but because it was so difficult to watch birds there, I also liked this place (birding is a rough sport). I would
recommend at least 3 full days over here.

Yuturi-Yarina
Both lodges can only be visited by official booked tours (see website). I chose Yuturi out of the Amazonian
lodges, mainly because of the price tag and because it was highly recommended by my friends. It takes
almost a full day to get there (180kms along the Rio Napo starting from Coca). I asked explicit for Jaime to
be my personal guide. At the moment we took of in Coca, Jaime was not present. I got José, his nephew,
instead of Jaimé for 12 days. José is okay, but for die-hard birders like me, he wasn’t good enough at that
moment (he saw ca. 40 new species with me). He doesn’t have binoculars (Yuturi should give him at least
decent binoculars with the book of Ecuador when they want him to become a bird-guide..) but really
knows to find the birds (Black-necked red-cotinga, Spotted puffbird (!), Great potoo, ..). Most of the
birding-time in the mourning and evening was spent in the varzea areas en route to the trails. The rest of
the day we mainly birded the terra firma trails like the Limon and Manduro Trail. At least one morning
should be used to bird the Rio Napo islands. Be careful here with the sandflies because some of them
have also Leishmania (check google)! You can avoid the sandflies to use insect-repellent. I birded the so
called Monkey Island (older vegetation with Rufous-headed woodpecker) and a recent unnamed island
(pioneer vegetation, good densities of birds). Night birding was limited to the grounds and trails in the
direct vicinity of the lodge and along the river. The last day was spent obligatory at the Yarina Lodge.
Since the Yuturi canopy tower is broken down I opted to spend most of the time at Yarina on the canopy
tower. Shame that you lose a lot of good birding-time again to get from Yuturi to Yarina.. In the jungle I
saw also Anaconda, sloth’s, Giant otters, heard River-dolphins and some other nice animal species.

Tandayapa
There seem to be absolutely no signposts! Along the new road Quito - Los Bancos there is a turnoff in a
big bend to the right about 2km before the village of Nanegalito coming from Quito with a lot of other signs
(actually you can’t miss the turnoff). A few hundred meters past the Tandayapa village (keep right) there is
a dirt road on the right side leading to the lodge. It is on the opposite side of a trout farm. There are no
public busses serving this road, so you should hire a taxi at Nanegalito (or wait for a car at the junction
along the main-road like I did). The Tandayapa area is said to be not accessible on a day visit base, so
most people opt to spend just 1 night at the expensive lodge. Maybe, when you’re a lonely student, you
can try to sleep in the guide-station like I did. The feeders near the lodge hold good numbers of
hummingbirds (Green fronted lancebill). I mainly birded the lower trail system like the Potoo, Antpitta and
Hide Trail. At the end of the latter there is a nice bird hide. The light installation (actually the moths coming
to the light) attracts some nice bird species. They all can be seen on the trails as well. The trail-system
produced for me Scaled and Moustached antpitta, Rufous-breasted antthrush, Hoary puffleg, Mottled owl
(at night off course), White-winged becard (near lodge) and Dark-backed woodquail. You should also try
to see Streak-capped treerunner, Wedge-billed hummingbird (not on feeders), Andean solitaire,
Colombian screech owl (Megascops colombianus) and Olivaceous piha which I missed.
Bellavista
The Bellavista Lodge is situated 6km further along the same road as the Tandayapa Lodge. I asked to
have a taxi arranged from Tandayapa to Bellavista. A map covering the area is available at the office.
When you want to sleep in the research station (10 US dollar), you need to bring your own food they say!..
Otherwise you can sleep for a 17 US dollar (hot meal or breakfast included I think) in the shared room. I
spent a lot of time searching for the enigmatic Tanager Finch, the well known White-faced Nunbirds, the
Beautiful Jays, the huge Giant antpitta and the stunning Swallow-tailed nightjar. Despite 2 days effort
(especially along the dirt road to the research centre), I missed all these birds!.. Only 2 Ocellated
tapaculo’s, the Plate-billed mountain-toucans and the great views on the area were for me very satisfying
(certainly one of the most beautiful places on my trip).
Mindo-Loma
Along the road from Nanegaleto to Mindo-Los Bancos in a straight part at km 73.5 (1km before the
junction to Mindo) on the left side you’ll see a sign ‘Mindo Loma’ (probably now with a Black-chinned
mountain-tanager on). The 200-yard rough track from the main road ends in a parking area with cabins to
the left and the restaurant to the right. By this time the rooms of the lodge will be ready. I’m sure you’ll
have a very good time here when you stay (they received me with open arms, thanks for that!). There are
good feeders with as highlights Velvet-purple coronets, Empress brilliants and good numbers of other
hummers. The food for mankind is also very appreciable. Take note that you have to see 5 bird species
on this grounds: Hoary puffleg, Black-chinned mountain-tanager, Pacific tuftedcheek, Yellow-breasted
antpitta and Orange-breasted fruiteater. Their son Patricio who lives here is becoming a good bird-guide.
He knows the West-slope (Milpe, Finca 106,5, Yanacocha, (PVM),..) quite well and can help you to look
for some species like Club-winged manakin, Hoary puffleg, Yellow-breasted antpitta, … The shame is that
he doesn’t realise at this moment which species are important for world-birders and he’s quite expensive
for his knowledge (40 US dollar a day). If you stay, he shows you some special birds (puffleg, antpitta,
antthrushes) from Mindo Loma if you ask. It is very obvious where to bird because the trail’s aren’t that
long. From this lodge it’s easy to get in Milpe (from Mindo Loma to Los Bancos, dirt road to the right next
to a ‘bus-stop’ in a little town between km 95-96; follow dirt road for 700m, office at right side), Finca 106,5
(after Los Bancos in the direction of Quininde on left side at km 106,8) and if you want to Pedro Vicence
de Maldonado or PVM (at km 154 to the right, follow dirt road ca. 15-20 km to find good forest…).
Mindo
Along the road from Quito to Los Bancos a few km just after Santa Rosa at km 74.5 there is a well
signposted road down to the left to the pleasant village of Mindo (all buses passing there, know the
junction). The Yellow House Trail offered good birding (Heijnen et al.). The trail is signposted well and
starts at the end of the village on the back-corner of the market square. Just pass the iron gate and pay a
visit (and entrance fee) to the yellow house further along the road (friendly madam will show you the way
and give you a map). I had some nice birds like Wattled guan, Crested guan, Scaled fruiteater (at the end
of first loop-trail to the right), Dark-backed wood-quail, A C-o-t-R, Song wren). To find the good way to the
Page 15
15
in the Rio Nambillo area, I had one problem. When you cross the river for the second time, coming from
Mindo, you have to take the first ‘junction’ to the right (don’t go along the river like I did, but go ‘uphill’). I
never reached the Club-winged manakin-lek since there was a gate with an entrance-fee from 10 US $...
The first few kilometres weren’t good for birding but once you walk on the ridge in the forest, you can see
some beauties like Barred puffbird, A C-o-t-R, Toucan barbet, Glistening-green tanager and Barred hawk.
Canandez
For this lodge you need to contact the Jocotoco-fundacion and try to reach Boris Herrera because he’s
your man (if you have problems with finding him, contact me please)! He guided me 5 days. He really
knows his birds, knows the places and also love to do bird watching (doesn’t do it for the money..). The
good thing about this lodge is that your money goes to nature-reserves from the Jocotoco-fundacion.
More information you find on the internet. To reach the lodge you need to take a bus in the centre from
Quininde (departure around 12h45) that goes to Hoja Blanca. I think 2 (3?) villages after crossing the
Canandez-river (with the bus on a boat) you’ll see on your right a sign with a huge Jocotoco antpitta. Here
is the lodge. Alcides is one of the rangers that lives at the lodge with his wife and kids. Other rangers from
the park are Don Galo and Fernando (the lady-killer from the village). All this people here are very nice
(speak only Spanish) and the kids are incredibly cute. The food is okay for living so far from the true world.
Electricity is available only for a few hours a day. Over here I had the best sleeping ever. What can I say
about the bird-part?.. Just one word: stunning! Therefore I won’t make a list but just a map with notes
from the birds. For me Canandez was the one of the best experiences with birds so far (probably because
I didn’t plan this place but definitely also for it’s rarities I saw).

Tinalandia
We drove from Santo Domingo to Alluriquín (direction Quito) and stopped about 4-5km before the village
(= 15km from Santa Domingo). On the right hand side there is a signposted access road up to the hotel.
The hotel has some feeders worth checking. We found it far from straightforward to find out where to bird
but we eventually found the trail going through the forested area at the end of the domain. Therefore, my
little map can be handy. Best bird here was the Gray-breasted flycatcher in the dense scrub-part just after
the little ‘bridge’ along the trail. I would recommend to spend 1 or 2 days birding at this place.
Rio-Palenque
The reserve is situated at the left side along the main road Santo Domingo – Quevedo (highway 25) just
after a large ‘soft’ bend to the right at 47km marker about 1,5-2km past Patricia Pilar (discothèca in the
village….). The entrance is a chain between two piles. To enter you need to contact the rangers in the
house just after the entrance. We found the birding somewhat better than in Tinalandia. The forest patch
is so small it is very obvious where to bird. We wandered along all the trails and spent some short time in
Page 17
17
the open areas (plantations). Shame that the food was horrible (so be prepared to take your own food). In
contrast, the rooms were fantastic. I would recommend to spend 2 days over here.
Acknowledgements
Many personal thanks go out to Hans Mathéve for his information. I want to thank Raf Drijvers, Mitch
Lysinger, Sam Woods and Tom Goossens because they gave me also some information. To Patricio
Herrera, José 'Yuturilodge' and especially Boris Herrera for their excellent guiding. To the Herrera family
for my stay there, it was a great experience. And also many thanks to David Van den Schoor for the 11
days 'guiding', you gave me a lot of lifers.. For the moment, you're to good for me!
Systematic list of bird species
Taxonomy strictly follows names and sequence of James F. Clements (Birds of the World, A Checklist,
Fifth Edition 2000) with a few exceptions of recent taxonomic decisions and names changes (see also
www.ibispub.com/updates.html ), updated till 15 July 2005. Some interesting subspecies (or potential
taxonomic splits) are also mentioned. Notes of threatened species on the IUCN Red List were taken of
“Threatened Birds of the World” – BirdLife International (2000), see also
http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/species/index.html . For some species no details are given about their
abundance, this automatically indicates that the species was seen regularly, it does however not
necessarily mean that it is common. The list only contains species positively identified by at least one of
our group. Birds identified by guides or other people only are not included, presumed species neither...
After a few days I didn’t note every bird-species (for example, not every Turkey-vulture is mentioned) so
my bird-list is not complete..
