Aviation News...

WOWZA! The summer season has kicked off with a bang – the walk in visitor count is high and the scheduled groups have been off the charts. From the Bonner County Republican Women’s Luncheon, Kroc Center Seniors, EAA 102, Civil Air Cadets, Spokane Falls Community College along with many other groups – the museum has been hopping. If your group is interested in a private tour or catered lunch, please call the museum to arrange your visit. We have heard wonderful feedback regarding the new additions in the lower hangar and the quality of the displays here in the main museum hall. We are thrilled to begin working on the new big project! We have recently received a full Army Air Corps uniform donation and we are excited to get it on display here in the main hall in our military display. THANK YOU to everyone who donates! Don’t forget, the current museum hours are Monday – Saturday, 8am to 4pm and from Memorial Day, to Labor Day, the café is open from 11am to 3pm.

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the United States

commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great

Britain. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on

July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been

proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After

voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this

decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress

debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4.

Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts,

baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private

events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the

United States. Independence is a National Holiday.

Lower Museum Hangar… A Rotating Collection …

With all of the changes happening, one of the largest changes

was the completion of the lower hangar. The lower hangar now

looks like the main museum hall and has a interior walk around

area so that visitors can get a complete 360 view of the displays.

In the rear of the hangar, you can see the awesome collection of

books that have been donated by many, including one of our

volunteers, Buzz Sherman who donated hundred of his personal

aircraft books. If you would like to look at some of the books,

please ask a staff member and we will be able to assist you.

There is also a hot air balloon basket, a glider and a collection of

antique cameras from the early models to modern day digitals.

1st Class - Morning Rolled Fondant Workshop- Students attending this class will learn the proper way to prep and cover their own cakes with rolled fondant, the smooth type frosting that is the rave for so many cake de-signs. During

this class you will learn simple designs to complete your cakes and how to make a rose with the rolled fondant and using molds to create beautiful designs for any occasion. All Cakes, Frosting and Decorating Supplies Included.

Students required to bring a few things from home- apron, rolling pin, small turntable, pizza cutter.

3 D Theme Cakes Workshop —2:00—6:00 PM—$105.00 3-D Theme Cake Workshop - Students will learn to work with the bakery type whip cream frosting and make any

theme type cake for any occasion; Beach, skiing, lake, off road, park or themes to go with Disney type charac-ters. Airbrushing, basic color techniques and edible novelty items will be used to complete the project. All Cakes, Frosting

Jeff Hamilton has lived in the Spokane area since 2003. He retired from Accenture in 2001 after living in the San Francisco Bay

area for 30 years. He was raised in a small town in Montana. Accenture (NYSE: ACN) is a global management consulting,

technology services and outsourcing company with 2014 Revenue of $30 Billion and over 320,000 people in 56 countries.

Accenture provides services primarily to the world’s largest companies. Mr. Hamilton retired as a Senior Managing Partner and

a member of the Firm’s Global Management Council.

During his career, Mr. Hamilton specialized in operational and technology management issues. He both managed and had

oversight responsibility for a wide variety of client projects focused on achieving operational excellence, optimizing technology

investments, and transforming IT capabilities to provide greater business value.

In addition to working with clients, Mr. Hamilton held a variety of management positions with Accenture. He was the Managing

Partner of one of the Firm’s Pacific-Region operating divisions for ten years and was the Managing Partner for global operations

of the Firm’s largest market unit prior to retirement. Mr. Hamilton taught frequently at the Firm’s international training center

on topics including contract negotiation, project management, system design, process re-engineering and risk management.

Before retiring, he planned and led the restructuring of Accenture’s global operations to prepare for transition from a private

partnership to a publicly-owned corporation.

In addition, Mr. Hamilton served on the Investment Committee for the Firm’s U.S. Pension and Benefit Funds for over ten years.

Mr. Hamilton was an initial member of the Whitefish (MT) Community Foundation and served on the Board for several years.

He was a member of the Board of the Oakland (CA) Symphony and is a past Chair of the Advisory Board for the University of

Montana Business School. He received the University's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2008. He served on the Spokane

Airports Board and chaired the Search Committee for the new Airport Director in 2011. He was a member and past Chair of the

Board of Lighthawk, a volunteer-based aviation organization which supports environmental efforts in North and Central America

by providing aerial perspective to decision makers.

Mr. Hamilton received a B.S degree from the University of Montana and an MBA from Southern Illinois University. He served as

a U.S. Air Force officer from 1967 to 1971. Mr. Hamilton has been an active pilot for 45 years with commercial, multi-engine,

instrument, and seaplane ratings.

Barbara “Barb” Branson

My husband and I have been residents of Martin Bay since 2000. I also retired that year from the St. Paul Insurance Co. as a commercial insurance technician after 18 years. We have two sons and two grandsons, the youngest of which is serving in the U.S. Army at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

I enjoy sewing, reading and fishing. I am on the board of the Gamlin Lake Cemetery Association serving as Secretary/Treasurer. I also teach Sunday school at the Church in the Wildwood and am the Secretary for the Emerald Beach Homeowners Cooperative Association. As if that doesn’t keep me busy enough, I work full time at Percussionaire Corporation. I believe in the respirators that we make and the good that they do for people.

Words that I have always found comfort in are paraphrased from the Bible, ”God is faithful in all things.”

For me the most memorable historic event was when Israel became an independent nation in 1948. I believe that God’s clock began to tick again and we are in the days of the events in the book of Revelations.

I love to travel with my husband Al and I want to go deep sea fishing. We now spend Winters in Arizona and Summers in North Idaho.

Donna Perdue Steen

I was born into a Naval military family in Long

Beach, California and moved to Virginia, Utah,

France, and finally settled down in Spokane,

Washington.

I meet my husband, Greg in Spokane and we

now have been married for 45 years. My

husband and I ended up in the Sagle area, near

the Bird Residence as my husbands’ family

bought our property at Glengary Bay in 1932.

We moved here to stay in 1986. We have three

adult children, two sons- Eric and Matthew and

one daughter, Kristy. They have given us four

amazing grandchildren.

I was trained as a nurse, and worked at Holy

Family Hospital as well as Good Samaritan

Nursing Home in Spokane, Washington. I gave

up my profession to do the most important job I

could ever have - being a wife and mother.

Once my children were grown up enough to

have a good upbringing, I went to work for

Percussionaire Corporation- which was just a

walk away from my house. I worked there for

14 ½ years.

When my husband, Greg and I decided to retire,

I needed something to do to fill a little bit of

time, so I decided to become a volunteer at the

Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center. I

respect Drs. Forrest & Pam Bird and want to be

a part of promoting Dr. Forrest Bird’s legacy,

and I think this is a good way to do so.

UNITED FLYING

OCTOGENARIANS…

Founded in 1982 by a group of 31 aviators over the age of 80, the United Flying Octogenarians (UFO) now has a

membership of over 1,400 men and women. When each of our members joined, at the age of 80 or older, he or

she was still flying as Pilot-in-Command. Today, many of us are no longer at the controls of an aircraft, but our

love of aviation still binds us to this elite group. Do you qualify to be a UFO? If so, visit their website at

SANDPOINT’S FESTIVITIES DURING THE

4TH

OF JULY WEEKEND!!!

Sandpoint celebrates the red, white and blue!

Enjoy the Fourth of July festivities all day in Sandpoint as

the Sandpoint Lions Club hosts a spectacular day of fun and

festivities Saturday, July 4, starting with the children's

parade at 9 a.m. in downtown Sandpoint. Following is the

Grand Parade at 10 a.m.; this year's theme is "Honoring Our

Heroes" featuring the students of Sandpoint High School as

the grand marshals. In the afternoon, there will be children's

games at City Beach at 2 p.m., along with free ice cream

and live music by Frank Moore and Friends, and Fiddlin'

Red. Raffle tickets will on sale all day long at the entrance

to City Beach - first place prize is a John Deere Gator!

Proceeds help pay for the day's fun, including the

spectacular fireworks show at dusk.

IAoI - Inventors

Association of Idaho The Idaho Association of Inventors is a

group of local men and women who share the

common interest of innovation, education and

exploration. The Bonner County Economic

Development Center, University of Idaho and

B.A.M.I.C. and the volunteers of the museum are

all co-sponsors of this group.

Hello,

We hope that you and your families are enjoying the summer in beautiful north

Idaho.

Forrest and I enjoyed seeing each of you

at the annual volunteer potluck that was

held a few weeks ago. We thank you for

your continued support of the museum and our mission to educate visitors about

the historical contributions of mankind.

From innovation to aviation, there is always something changing from

technology to how things are done.
